Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe 215ft West Tower of Ely Cathedral.jpg |
English: This enormous Tower is one of the highest if not the highest in Cambridgeshire and is said to be able to be seen from every church tower in the diocese. Whether this is true or not we may never know but the views from the tower are incredible!
The Cathedral is known locally as the 'Ship of the Fens' due to its odd shape. The cathedral is formally known as 'The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely' but is better known as Ely Cathedral. At 163.7m, it is one of the largest and longest churches in Europe and is widely known for its Norman Architecture and its Gothic Octogan. The West Tower dates from 2 periods; up to the Louvers is Norman and it dates from 1174 to 1197. The later top part dates from the late 1300 in the Early English Style. The West Tower was always originally supported by two Transepts with only the South West Transept remaining, visible on the right. The remains of the North West Transepts can be seen on the left. |
