Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Considered the father of the 14th Amendment, Thaddeus Stevens was a businessman, lawyer, member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature, and Congressman. As a financier of the iron industry in the Pennsylvania area that now includes Caledonia State Park, he was later honored by the naming of this 1830 blacksmith shop. More importantly, Stevens was a fierce abolitionist, helped write the 14th Amendment, and argued successfully for its passage. The Amendment granted all African-Americans U.S. citizenship and equal rights under the law. Stevens was also a strong proponent of public education.
