English: Snow blanketed much of eastern Asia in the last days of January 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard the Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the frigid scene as it passed overhead on January 31. The snow stretches from Mongolia (northwest), through northeastern China, and far-eastern Russia and extends southward across much of the Korean Peninsula. The winter has been unusually severe in Mongolia, where the freezing weather and heavy snow has stressed livestock, which starve when thick snow and ice covers grazing lands. Severe winters are known as dzuds to the locals. This is the second severe winter in a row for Mongolians.
