Summary

Description

(looking downstream)

When streams pass over certain rock types, dissolution can occur. This potentially happens in areas with limestone, marble, rock salt, or rock gypsum.

This apparently-unnamed stream is passing over Ordovician limestone in Kentucky. Streamwater is disappearing underground at the mouth of a cave. The low grating at the mouth of the sink is intended to prevent large pieces of rubbish and trash from entering the subterranean stream.

Locality: stream & sink just southwest of the Cabot Drive-Parkside Drive intersection, northeastern side of the Lexington urban area, north-central Fayette County, north-central Kentucky, USA (38° 05' 09.70" North latitude, 84° 27' 31.35" West longitude)
