A aldeia de Castelo Mendo recebeu a sua primeira carta de foral em 1186, outorgada por D. Sancho I, quando o monarca ordenou a reedificação do seu castelo, um importante ponto na linha de defesa das fronteiras nacionais na Idade Média. Na centúria seguinte, quando em 1239 D. Sancho II mandou ampliar as muralhas, era concedido novo foral à vila. Em 1281 D. Dinis outorgava carta de feira à vila - sendo esta provavelmente a primeira feira existente em Portugal -, e o concelho recebia novo foral em 1295. Em 1510, durante as Reformas Manuelinas da administração local, o foral de Castelo Mendo foi renovado e o seu pelourinho terá sido edificado nessa época, sendo já representado nos desenhos de Duarte de Armas, realizados cerca de 1519. O concelho de Castelo Mendo seria extinto em 1855. Classificado como pelourinho de gaiola, o pelourinho de Castelo Mendo assenta numa plataforma de seis degraus octogonais, sobre a qual assenta coluna de fuste octogonal, com base decorada por folhas estilizadas. O capitel, de secção circular em forma de cone invertido, funciona como base da gaiola, e possui anéis decorados por diversos motivos, nomeadamente correntes, cabos, denteados invertidos e florões. O conjunto da gaiola é composto por chapéu, assente em colunelo torso, decorado por pérolas. O colunelo central é circundado por seis colunelos torsos e anelados, sustentados por grampos de ferro. Como remate da gaiola foi colocado chapéu cónico, decorado por cordame na zona inferior. É encimado por cone, de menores dimensões, coroado por catavento em forma de bandeirola bipartida.
