English: Major John Redd, born 25 October 1755 in Orange County, Virginia, was one of the first settlers of Henry County, Virginia, where he served as a Major in the forces of the American Continental forces in the Revolution, and where he later served as High Sheriff of the county as well as a member of the county court for 40 years. Redd married Mary Winston Carr Waller, daughter of Col. George Waller and his wife Ann Winston Carr Waller, first cousin of Virginia governor Patrick Henry. Major Redd built 'Belleview' Plantation, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Buried in the Redd family graveyard at Belleview is Rev. John James Fontaine, grandson of Patrick Henry, who married Mary Carr Redd, granddaughter of Major John Redd. |
