English: Applications of nanotechnology and magnetism for data storage, medicine and art. Explains the principles of the superparamagnetic effect on very small particles, use of self assembly techniques to create nanoporous templates and magnetic structures with high volume to surface area ratios, and the application of the principle of exchange coupling to create smaller and more powerful permanent magnets.
Medical applications include contrast agents for MRI identification of cancer cells, destruction of tumors with magnetically stimulated particles, and controlled release of medications. Ferrofluids have many practical applications; here we explore its potential as an artistic medium. The basic concepts of magnetic fields are demonstrated in three dimensions by the dynamic behavior of ferrofluid and powerful neodymium magnets. |
