Description
Nederlands: Zondag 30 januari. Broeierig, heet, stoffig. Hartje Gao. De eerste uitgestegen patrouille van Task Group Desert Falcon loopt kriskras door het centrum. Beréden had de eenheid al vaker haar gezicht laten zien, maar dit is een scoop. De bevolking toont zich verheugd – of die Nederlandse militairen dat niet vaker willen doen, want dit is goed voor hun stad. Ons mediateam volgt de luchtmobiele infanteristen van VN-missie MINUSMA op de voet. Desert Falcon begint zijn patrouille op een markant punt. Reed het voertuigenpakket net al vlak langs de locatie van de verschrikkelijke aanslag (op 18 januari ontplofte in Gao een bomauto en eiste bijna 80 doden en 120 gewonden, red.), nu staat de eenheid naast het Vredesplein geparkeerd. Die naam is enigszins bedrieglijk. “Hier hakte het sharia-bewind een paar jaar geleden toch nog handen van dieven af?”, zegt een korporaal die van een van de tonners springt.
