Italiano: Il testimone aveva in entrambi i nonni sul fronte; Arena Giuseppe originario di Messina era ufficiale di carriera, figlio di un generale che partecipò alla rivolta anti-borbonica del 1848 a Messina e successivamente alla guerra di Libia nel 1912. Giuseppe è ufficiale durante la prima guerra mondiale sul fronte del San Michele a 29 anni. Fu decorato con la Croce di Guerra al Merito. Successivamente lascia l'esercito e passa alla Milizia come ufficiale nel 1928-30. L'altro nonno, Ajello Francesco originario anch'esso di Messina, era Capitano dei Granatieri di Sardegna. Ferito al fronte fu ricoverato nell'ospedale Salviatino di Firenze e tornò al fronte dopo la convalescenza. All'inizio della guerra ha 28 anni. Gli fu conferita l'onorificenza della Croce al Merito.
