Description
English: Karel Van Wijnendaele (1882-1961), was one of the pioneers of Flemish sports journalism. From 1912 he worked for the sports newspaper SportWereld, later for Het Nieuwsblad. During his career he was very active in promoting cycling nationally and internationally. He fed the myth of the so called ‘flandrien’: to become a champion through extreme willpower. This monument stands on the Kwaremont, one of the hills on which history is written during the Tour of Flanders. See also: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Van_Wijnendaele
Nederlands: Karel Van Wijnendaele (1882-1961), was een pionier van de Vlaamse sportjournalistiek. Vanaf 1912 werkte hij voor de sportkrant SportWereld, later voor Het Nieuwsblad. Tijdens zijn loopbaan was hij heel actief om het wielrennen nationaal en internationaal te promoten. Hij voedde de mythe van de flandrien: door middel van wilskracht kampioen worden.
