Description

As can be verified here, this splendid Victorian school was opened as Heber Road Board School in 1883. A year later there were over 1000 children in attendance. Nowadays the figure is just over 300. Between 1902 and 1918 my mother, Hilda Roberts, and some of her brothers and sisters were amongst its pupils. The family lived at 2 Heber Road. Their cousins, the children of Thomas and Elizabeth Roberts, may well also have gone there. If you know anything about them please leave a comment.

The building on the right was once The Heber Arms but is now an apartment block. The Heber Arms in 1986 can be seen here and the school viewed from the Hemmings Road side in 1986 can be seen in the fifth comment below.

From all reports Heber Road was a good school when my ancesters went there and it's just as good – if not better – now.

The photo was taken in October 2007, but I've adjusted the date so that it relates to the time my mother was a pupil.
