Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dust filled the skies over and around the Persian Gulf in the first days of autumn, 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired a true-color image of the dusty region on September 24.

The soft, hazy look of the landscape is created by fine dust throughout the entire view of the image, with the exception of the northeast corner where clearer skies allow a sharper view of the mountainous ridges of Iran. The dust reaches across all the countries along the Persian Gulf, from the top, left corner and moving clockwise these countries are: Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

A thick plume of dust blows towards the southeast from the area just east of the Shatt al Arab River, which enters the Gulf in the north along the Iran-Iraq border. This river drains the combined waters of the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers of Iraq and the Karun River of Iran. Underneath this northern-most, thick plume the waters of the Persian Gulf are stained tan with sediment, first tan then – as the sediment settles deeper into the water – in tones of blue and green. The sediment is carried primarily by inflowing rivers, but dust also falls into the water from overhead.
