Description Castanea sativa
Deutsch: Edelkastanie (Castanea sativa) auch Esskastanie. Die Früchte sind glänzende, dunkelbraune Nüsse. Die Früchte eines Teilblütenstandes sind von einem stacheligen Fruchtbecher (Cupula) umgeben, der sich aus der schuppigen Scheide entwickelt. Bei der Wildform hat der Fruchtbecher einen Durchmesser von fünf bis sechs Zentimeter, bei Kulturformen kann er bis zehn Zentimeter erreichen. Bei Vollreife öffnet sich der Fruchtbecher mit vier Klappen und entlässt die ein bis drei Früchte.
