Summary

[edit]
Description

The Hawaiian Islands once had three distinct crows (Corvus). One species remains and it is extremely rare, the Hawaiian crow or ʻalalā (Corvus hawaiiensis). The other two are extinct. These fossils represent one or two of the Slender-billed crow (Corvus viriosus) and the Deep-billed crow (C. impulviatus).

Pictured is a side view of the tip of the rostrum and lower mandible (whole).

These specimens came from the Barber's Point sinkholes, Oʻahu, Hawaiian Islands. Identified by the late Alan C. Ziegler in 1992.
