| Description |
English: Seattle's new Central School opened for classes in the spring of 1883. Only five years later, in 1888, the big wooden school building burned to the ground after its furnace exploded. The city's population was growing fast, and Seattle's citizens quickly agreed to build a larger, brick Central School to replace the old one.
This photo shows Seattle's first Central School which opened just south of Madison Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The photograph was taken from a point near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and James Street sometime between 1883 and 1888. The smaller tower, to the left, is at Providence Hospital.
