is friends never tired of speaking.His active efTorts for the protection of wildbirds date from the verj beginnings of or-ganized bird-protective efTorts in the UnitedStates. At the tliird annual meeting of the Amer-ican Ornithologists Union, held in New YorkCity in the fall of 1885, he became a memberof the newly appointed Committee on BirdProtection. The following year this Com-mittee prepared for publication a 16-pagesujiplement to Science, and shortly after-ward 100,000 copies of this were issuedas Bulletin No. i of the .\merican Orni-thologists Unions Committee on Bird Pro-tection. By far the most forceful article inthis Bulletin was by Dr. .Mien, and bore thetitle, Present Wholesale Destruction of BirdLife in the United States. When in August,1886, the original Audubon Society wasformed by Dr. George Bird Grinnell, theneditor of Forest and Stream, Dr. Allensname appeared as one of its five incor-porators. JOEL ASAPH ALLEN 276 Bird -Lore Allen at once became not onl\- a member ofthe Board of Directors, but a member of theExecutive Committee, which position heheld as long as the Society continued active.Dr. J. A. Allen was one of the founders andincorporators of the National Association ofAudubon Societies, established in January,1905. From that time until his death he re-mained an acti\e member of the Board andwas most faithful in his attendance at itsmeetings. To the very last he took deepinterest in all the Associations problems and achievements. His mature judgment anddeep, sympathetic interest made his servicesof the greatest value to the organization. The burial took place in Windsor Ceme-ter> at Cornwall-on-Hudson, on the after-noon of September i, 1921. Many of hisfriends and associates joumejed from NewYork, Washington, and elsewhere to be pres-ent on this impressive occasion and by theirattendance do such poor honor as was pos-sible to one whose life had been so largelyspent
