Summary
[edit]DescriptionBae Yong-joon at Madame Tussaud's Hong Kong.jpg |
The exhibits include stars from not just Hong Kong and China, but from nearby Asian countries as well. Here is Bae Yong-joon (배용준, 裴勇俊), the South Korean actor and star of "Winter Sonata" who led the way in popularizing the Korean pop culture throughout Asia and beyond. Japanese fans, in particular, are known to worship him by referring to him in an honorific nickname, ヨンさま (Yon-sama, "yon" being the closest Japanese sound to "Yong"). The decline of Hong Kong's own pop culture wave partly had to do with the rise of newly affluent South Korea and its pop culture competition, but also had to do with the anxiety over the Communist Chinese takeover. Fortunately, the Communists left Hong Kong's freedoms largely alone, but the damage was nevertheless done. Authoritarianism, coming from a far-right government newly in power in Seoul, may indeed similarly curb South Korean creativity in the future. |
