A long time coming, item 3
Description
English: My object is a gold watch presented to Major Edward Sherlock M.C., inscribed as follows: To Maj. E. Sherlock M.C. from officers NCOS and men of D/161 Bde. R.F.A. with luck and best wishes. The watch is made by Elgin in a J. Boss Keystone watch case, number 7352637. Major Sherlock was born on 8th May, 1886. He married Countess Louisa Kathleen Mary O'Kelly 5th June, 1940 and died on the 3rd of May, 1953. The watch went missing on his death, believed stolen. In the late 1990's, the Gardai caught a person with goods believed stolen. The watch was among them. From the inscription, they traced Major Sherlock to his last address at Rahan Lodge, Rahan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The UK Dept. of Defence gave them information which led to the Gardai contacting me and my wife, his daughter. After the court case, the watch was returned to us. Edward was a rubber planter in Malaysia but returned home to look after his father and mother. He inherited the house on their deaths. We don't know why he was presented with the watch. The house where Edward lived was owned by the Marquis of Lansdowne. Shell end, engraved with Somme 1916. Karlsruhe, 1915.
