east and belly brown and white mixed ; the underwing coverts downy, and whitish, some of the more outward marbledbrown; quills beneath half white, half silvery brown ; the generalcolour of the plumage above brown ; the wing coverts tipped withwhitish, and crossed with a white band, parallel to the coverts; taildusky, the outer feathers three lines shorter than the second, andwhitish ; legs glossy black, very short, and greatly compressed. Found at Paraguay in July, but only one obtained ; the greatestsingularity is, from the number as well as structure of the quills,which are twenty-one or twenty-two, the fourth longest of all; theseare very narrow, weak, and pointed, and the feathers of the fore partof the Heck like bristles. 164.—ANNUM BI FLYCATCHER. OZcCrlC- FLYCATCHER. 257 forehead red, growing paler backwards, changing into brown at thenape, and all the feathers, except those of the forehead, are dusky inthe middle; sides of the head nearly white, and behind the eye abrown streak; throat white, bordered by a streak of black andwhite mixed; taking rise from each corner of the mouth; under-neath the neck and body mixed brown and whitish ; wings beneathsilvery, with a bright tinge of red; upper parts of the neck andbody, lesser wing coverts, and quills, light brown; greater onesreddish ; tail cuneiform, the outer feathers fifteen lines shorter thanthe middle, the others paler red ; all but the two middle tail feathersdusky, the others edged with brown, and a white spot at the tip ;all the feathers pointed ; legs olive. Inhabits South America ; called by the Guaranis Annumbi and.Guira Annumbi, % and is not uncommon ; feeds on insects, andprobably small seeds; keeps in thick hedges, also in open spots;makes the nest on a decayed tre
