- Question Does ‘school context’ include remote learning? Brianjd (talk) 08:38, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oui, étant donné le contexte depuis trois ans, on peut considérer que l'enseignement à distance fait bien partie du contexte scolaire AntoineDeliDrane (talk) 08:52, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Question Are the (presumably non-free) works shown on the screens a problem here? Brianjd (talk) 08:39, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: You should write in English, so people understand it and include a gallery of example images please. -- F. Riedelio • 💬 18:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

- @AntoineDeliDrane All of your examples have French captions. More importantly, all of them come from the same author. Please try to include as more variety in your examples. Brianjd (talk) 13:30, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- @F. Riedelio I don’t see anything in the instructions about writing in English. Brianjd (talk) 13:07, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- You should, you don't have to. F. Riedelio • 💬 10:28, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- @F. Riedelio Why? I thought Commons was supposed to serve all languages equally, and any exceptions to that rule (like category names) are for technical reasons. Brianjd (talk) 10:35, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- For more detailed information please see here. F. Riedelio • 💬 11:01, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- @F. Riedelio Ironically, you linked to a non-English version that was useless to me. I read the English version, which says that gallery, category and file descriptions, file names and templates can be in any language, with no particular language preferred. That should apply here too. Brianjd (talk) 11:08, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

- Comment Interesting observation that the first 7 votes are done all at the same day by users for whom this vote was the first edit ever on Commons. Class assigment? --Jarekt (talk) 00:57, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Jarekt Now that I have opened the file descriptions (instead of just using the popups gadget), I can see another ‘interesting’ thing: every image in the example gallery was newly uploaded by the nominator. (Note that I already complained above about a lack of variety in the example gallery. But the instructions provide no guidance on what should be in the gallery; perhaps that needs to be changed.) Brianjd (talk) 01:37, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- All images are in only one category: the newly created Numérique à l'école (it should be English, per Commons:Categories). And the two that are geotagged are in the commune of Besançon (Q37776). Brianjd (talk) 01:46, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oui, le sujet a été proposé pour être choisi dans le cadre d'un défi proposé aux classes de l'académie de Toulouse, en France, comme je l'ai signalé dans ce post sur le bistro. Est-ce un problème ? AntoineDeliDrane (talk) 09:20, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

- I suggest that Bistro section of December 2022 for the background. In short, the user was considering organizing an independent activity somewhat on the model of the Commons photo challenge, or to somehow participate to the Commons challenge for February. Other than a few technical questions about Commons, there's not much that could be said on the Bistro about the Commons challenge, so I recommended that the user contact the organizers of the challenge (namely Jarekt, as he seemed active with the page updates) and see that with them. I guess that did not happen. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:25, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
-- Asclepias (talk) 18:52, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias I take your comment as evidence that: (1) Copyright is unsuitable for the real world. (2) Copyright is not taught well (or at all) in schools. Is that a fair interpretation? (This is relevant here because I actually raised copyright concerns about the example gallery above.) Brianjd (talk) 14:13, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

I liked that some Wiki users help me do this. A few years later, I try to return the service that was given to me by completing this photo gallery. -- Céléda (talk) 12:06, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose I consider the example gallery to be part of the proposal, and I cannot support such a gallery when it has only 5 images, which lack variety, were all contributed by the nominator and have possible copyright issues. Brianjd (talk) 14:15, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- The expanded gallery is better (although I don’t know how School model 6.jpg fits the theme). But I am still confused about this theme. Many of the previous themes could be linked to schools, particularly ‘Cables and wires’ (if restricted to electrical and communication wires, it is kind of a more specific version of this theme), ‘Children’s games’, ‘Demonstrations and protests’ (School Strike for Climate) and ‘Stationery’. Yet none of them were restricted to schools, and I don’t see why this one should be either. Brianjd (talk) 12:43, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

- Comment I don't think this topic in essence is bad, but it doesn't seem to be suitable for a photo contest. The circle of persons who can participate is very limited. I would say only teachers and students could realistically participate and I would probably need to be some class project. But I think this could be a good topic for an outreach project. outreach:Education might be a good place to get in contact to other people in education. --FlocciNivis (talk) 12:03, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
Bird feathers can be beautiful and show us nature's art, but they are also useful and utilized in many different ways. Pictures could be useful for articles on biological subjects as well as for article about culture and even economy.

I see a rising need for good illustrations about all topics related to climate change. Pictures could not only include images of extreme weather and its consequences, but also of climate change activists and demonstrations, of climate change conferences and any initiatives working to help reduce climate change impact.

- I want to support this, but I have concerns about the gallery. Puncak Jaya glaciers 1850-2003 evolution map-fr.gif isn’t a photo, or even a video. More importantly, photos of demonstrations are often deleted due to the prominent inclusion of non-free signs. This gallery raises similar concerns, most obviously with Wikimania 2018 by Rainer Halama-083052.jpg and AMP 8145.jpg. Brianjd (talk) 09:22, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
- I believe most signs at demonstrations, and those signs I selecte, don't meet the threshhold of originality. But if others think they do, I will be happy look for other images for the gallery. As for the animated image of the Puncak glacier, I agree that it is not a photo, but why do you see this as a problem? Kritzolina (talk) 17:21, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Kritzolina Regarding the signs, I might be overly sensitive because of my deletion request at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Gillfoto#Files uploaded by Gillfoto (talk · contribs) 2 (which still has not been responded to by another user). Turning back to the photos here, Wikimania 2018 by Rainer Halama-083052.jpg definitely looks like it should be above the threshold, unless things are different in that country: no information about the threshold is given at COM:CRT/South Africa. AMP 8145.jpg seems borderline, with the text shadows and the colorful background.
- I do see the animated image as a problem. I think that the gallery of example images should be exactly that: examples of images that would be appropriate as entries if they met the other challenge criteria. Brianjd (talk) 14:34, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

A glitch is the result of unexpected behavior in software. This can often result in interesting art. We however do not have many examples for glitch art on commons yet. Even though it is a kind of art which most of us photographers have at least produced by accident using photo editing software once. If this becomes a contest, it would be interesting if contestants would also document how they achieved those glitches. I for example had a glitch with Darktable for a while, where it would generate corrupted images, if I opened an image in a mediaviewer, while exporting with Darktable. --FlocciNivis (talk) 21:26, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

- Oppose Because a glitch is the result of unexpected behaviour in software, it is a result only by chance and not willingly a result of a photographic experience. For my opinion, our photo contest should show the best pictures of every contributor and not a bad result, especially its generated by the computer and not by a human being Marc-Lautenbacher (talk) 17:12, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose My understanding is that glitch art can still be considered "glitch art" even if it's produced intentionally, but Commons isn't just a platform for sharing one's art. I feel that this challenge would encourage the uploading of too much glitch art of little significance. Willschryver94 (talk) 16:27, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose per others. While appreciate recent tendencies to be more open about the more "artsy" aspects of photography, I think this would be pushing the boundaries of both Commons' and the Photo Challenge's scope a bit too much. --El Grafo (talk) 15:34, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
2023 is the UNESCO year of Millet. I was very surprised by this at first, but started reading about the importance of millet not only for food productions, but also as a source of fibers for industry and other uses, I got more and more fascinated with this plant(family). I generally think doing one challenge each year that is dedicated to the topic the UNESCO sets could be a good practice to adopt. --Kritzolina (talk) 19:01, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

There are many beaches and many types of beaches. This challenge should reduce the absence of images of some types of beaches and individual beaches. It inclues only beaches, not other kinds of coasts or shores lacking strands of sand, gravel or pebble at the point where the water body ends and the land begins.

Art of paper cutting/Photographic Silhouette
[edit]I have this idea from a photography book I read couple of years ago. There photographs of a black silhouette with backlight are called "Scherenschnitt", which is the German word for paper cuttings. For this contest we could allow both pictures of photographic silhouettes and paper cuts. Photographic silhouettes can be taken of many buildings, people and structures giving many people the possibility to participate in this competition. And it would be interesting to see more traditional paper cuttings here

- Oppose to Art of paper cutting as part of "photo challenge". Paper cuttings would require participants to either focus on scanning historical works or on making cuts themselves. Scans of historical artworks, like the ones in the example gallery, would be rejected as violating "Photographs must be the work of the nominator" requirement of each challenge, and self-made cuttings are likely to be deleted as out of scope. Also in the case of scans, it would be award if 2 people scanned the same image (like this), resulting in indistinguishable entries. @Kritzolina and Jarekt: I was surprised to see this theme, since masks are copyrighted by default. I think I do not understand the current consensus on the subject. To my eyes, several of the examples (and submissions) are clear copyright violations. The language at COM:COSTUME is ambiguous. Most of that section effectively says "it's copyrighted", but then undercuts it at the very end with a photo of spiderman. Does that mean any copyrighted work/character can be printed onto a mask and is immune from deletion on Commons? — Rhododendrites talk | 19:57, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Posted to COM:VPC instead. - Comment I would limit the scope of this contest to just ethnic shops, as there are probably copyright and privacy violations if the interior of stores are photographed and uploaded here --FlocciNivis (talk) 21:51, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
- i was thinking, if everything users submit is just photos of storefronts, that would be quite boring. goods inside shops are interesting too. ofc copyright must be considered, but many things can still be photographed, like spices in a spice shop, vintage artifacts, shop owners, shop visitors, etc. RZuo (talk) 06:11, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @FlocciNivis Another photo theme proposal, another incomprehensible privacy concern. The interiors of stores are public places, and Commons already has plenty of photos of interiors of stores depicting identifiable people. Brianjd (talk) 11:04, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Brianjd What is incromprehensible about this concern? I suggest you to read about semi-public spaces. This isn't as black-and-white as you make it out to be and local rules and jurisdiction might apply. And for smaller store, which most ethnic stores are, privacy concerns are definitely there. --FlocciNivis (talk) 11:24, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @FlocciNivis It’s the way you present it: there are probably … privacy violations if the interior of stores are photographed … (emphasis added). Perhaps a more accurate statement would be: There might be privacy violations if people inside stores are photographed.
- There might be laws or store rules that prohibit photography. Surely it is wrong to say there are probably such rules. Many countries do not have such laws, and, among stores I have seen, hardly any list such rules as conditions of entry. Those stores that do have such rules are probably more interested in restricting access to their designs than they are in protecting people’s privacy. (To the extent that such rules do create an expectation of privacy, the Commons guideline now says that they should be followed. Until recently, the guideline did not cover this issue. At least that is a step in the right direction.)
- Perhaps you think that there is some inherent expectation of privacy in such stores, even if there are no laws or store rules that say so. If that is what you think, then say so and we can discuss it.
- If there are no people, then surely there is no privacy violation. There might be a violation of the store’s rules, but that’s not the sort of violation Commons cares about. Brianjd (talk) 12:22, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Brianjd As I see it, this is a legal gray area. Where you live shop interiors might be considered strictly public, but that is not true everywhere in the world.
- And it is not just about people inside stores or designs. Pictures from inside a store could be used to spread bad rumors about stores... I've seen this on Google Maps for example. I would trust Wikimedians in general not to do something like that. But should we really encourage people through a contest to go into small stores, take pictures from the inside and publish them here? Even if it's legal, I would see this as a courtesy. And my emphasis here really is on the small stores. Big retail chains surely have the capacity to take action, small stores might not. FlocciNivis (talk) 13:26, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
- @FlocciNivis Where you live shop interiors might be considered strictly public, but that is not true everywhere in the world. Is anyone allowed to walk into a shop? For most shops, yes. Therefore, they are public. I don’t know what the problem is there. Note that some countries require consent even in public – those laws would apply here.
- I don’t know why we would exclude the insides of small stores as a courtesy. Anything can be used to spread rumours about anything if you are manipulative enough; I don’t know why we should be concerned about that here. I think we’ll just have to accept that we disagree on that point. Brianjd (talk) 11:27, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Brianjd Yep, we clearly have a different view on that point. So let's just agree to disagree and see what others have to say. FlocciNivis (talk) 11:32, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Brianjd What is incromprehensible about this concern? I suggest you to read about semi-public spaces. - @RZuo As you probably know, every photo challenge includes a warning about respecting personality rights. It’s clearly not enough. People can’t agree on what is ‘ethical’ or when it is ‘necessary’ to obtain consent. Sometimes I feel compelled to tag entries (including winning entries) as {{Consent|query}}; I take that as evidence that no one else is taking this seriously. Fungi
[edit]Let's send people mushroom hunting! We do have some excellent images of fungi, but there are so many different kinds and varieties, there is always more to click. --Kritzolina (talk) 19:14, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

Intentional Camera Movement
[edit]We always have less challenges focused on photography techniques, so I would like to suggest this one, as there is currently a fresh page for Featured Images for it. --Kritzolina (talk) 10:16, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
