What is the difference between Category:Russian national costumes and Category:National costumes of Russia? Can these two categories be merged (into Category:Traditional clothing of Rusland, see Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/07/Category:Traditional clothes by country)? JopkeB (talk) 04:52, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Category:National costumes of peoples of the Russian Federation schould be the parent category.
  2. Category:Russian national costumes is one of its subcategories.
  3. Category:National costumes of Russia is redundant; you transferred the categories and media already to one of the other two.
Are these conclusions correct?
If yes, then:
  • After we checked wether it's parent categories were all transferred to one of the two remaining categories, we'll need a redirect for Category:National costumes of Russia to ?? To which of the two remaining categories?
  • There is still another problem, about the parent categories of both categories that will stay:
(1) They partly have the same parent categories, what is at least odd, but should not be so because of over-categorization and
(2) Category:National costumes of peoples of the Russian Federation misses at least one category with the name of the country in it, to distinguish it from Russia, something with the Russian Federation and clothing, culture and/or folklore. Unfortunately Category:Russian Federation does not exist anymore, it has a redirect to Category:Russia. As a solution we could reopen it, there are indeed more categories with this problem (having "the Russion Federation" in its name but wihtout a parent category with this name; instead they have parent categories of Russia). How do you think about this? Do you know another solution?
JopkeB (talk) 09:39, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I propose to rename Category:National costumes of peoples of the Russian Federation to Category:Traditional сlothing of peoples of the Russia. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 12:56, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That is good! I have still some questions:
  1. "People of the Russia" does not sound correct to me (but you are the expert). I think it is "Russia" without "the" OR "the Russian Federation", with "the". What do you think: Should it be Category:Traditional сlothing of peoples of Russia, Category:Traditional сlothing of peoples of the Russian Federation or really Category:Traditional сlothing of peoples of the Russia?
  2. How will the category structure be? Problem (1) will not be solved by implementing this solution. (Problem (2) might be.)
JopkeB (talk) 13:01, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Can be called Category:Traditional сlothing of ethnic group of Russia? --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 16:57, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that seems a good idea to me, that will say: Category:Traditional сlothing of ethnic groups of Russia, if it may be groups (plural). There are still some issues:
  1. There still will be one parent category that is in Category:Traditional сlothing of ethnic groups of Russia as well as in it's subcategory Category:Russian national costumes, namely Category:Clothing of Russia . I propose to remove this parent category from Category:Russian national costumes (the parent category about clothing is still in it's other parent category Traditional сlothing of ethnic groups of Russia). Do you agree?
  2. Am I right that categories with "Russia" in the category title are about the country Russia, the whole country, and that the categories with "Russian" in the name are about (costumes and clothing of) ethnic Russians? If yes, then it seems to me that there are subcategories in Category:Russian national costumes that belong in Category:Traditional сlothing of ethnic groups of Russia, like the categories with "National costumes of Russia" in the name. Could you please look into that?
JopkeB (talk) 13:12, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this name is more accurate – Category:Traditional сlothing of ethnic groups of Russia. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 16:00, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK! I'll make the changes and close this discussion if I don't come across strange things anymore. JopkeB (talk) 09:16, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

JopkeB (talk) 10:32, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note: The new category has been changed to Category:Traditional clothing of ethnic groups of Russia because in the proposed new category was a cyrillic small c (0x441), instead of a latin c (0x63). (See Commons:Village pump/Archive/2021/10#What is the difference between my "c" on a Latin keyboard and "с" on probably a Cyrillic keyboard?). JopkeB (talk) 15:15, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Spinus notatus is correct, Category:Spinus notata is not - the first description was for Carduelis notata, that does not count, because Carduelis is female. Since the species was moved to the genus Spinus the name for the species has to be Spinus notatus. Upmerge to Category:Schweipolt Fiol, the category of its founder and owner. No need to categorize the business separately from its founder (the business existed only for a few years during Fiol's life, and the printing was always under his personal name.) Umbenennung in zutreffende Kategoriebezeichnung "Frau mit Delfin (Pirna). Trotz anderslautender Informationen kann ich keine Umbenennung vornehmen, vermutlich, weil ich nicht der Autor bin. VSchagow (talk) 10:59, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@VSchagow: I don’t know why you can’t move it either. Regardless, the current name is obviously very poor. I wonder, though, if the “woman” is supposed to be Aphrodite, or perhaps a nymph. If the work is untitled (or the title is lost) I would also avoid implying that the category name is an actual title, by beginning the name with Statue of.

There is no specific museum called "Shusha Museum". There are several museums in the city of Shusha and it being a redirect is confusing for users as the name may refer to all of the museums in the city. CuriousGolden (talk) 12:00, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Slavonic" isn't a language but a language family. Contents should be redistributed into individual-language categories under Category:Letters (written messages) by language Fut.Perf. 15:40, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Future Perfect at Sunrise: It's a subcategory of Category:Church Slavonic language. Would Category:Church Slavonic letters be useful? --
Should probably be Category:Letters in Church Slavonic or Category:Letters (written messages) in Church Slavonic, to fit in with the naming scheme. Same proviso as with the parallel "documents" cat: we'll have to sift and check whether those items actually are in Church Slavonic (I'm not quite sure where you'd have the cut-off point between that and "Russian"/"Serbian" or whatever), or how many of them are complete hoaxes. The name of this main category is weird. The structural formulas are not created with SVG, but with different software. Leyo 22:27, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Then so is Category:Images of Florida, Category:Images of South Carolina, Category:Images of New Jersey, etc... @Jim.henderson: I was following someone else' example when I set them up Category:New Jersey photos by Jim.henderson --Mjrmtg (talk) 22:58, 4 September 2021 (UTC)--Mjrmtg (talk) 22:58, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjrmtg: Category:New Jersey photos by Jim.henderson is part of my personal category tree of hidden cats. Perhaps it makes a good precedent for other personal cat trees, or perhaps not, but it's not a good precedent for the ordinary kind. Seems to me, pictures of New Jersey or Florida or whatever, ought to be directly in the purely topical cats, ie in Category:New Jersey or whatever and its non-user subcats. Those non-user subcat trees will have many more branches, as there are many images of Newark, for example, and most ought to be subcategorized by such criteria as neighborhood, object type, year, or whatever else will help editors find illustrations for Wikipedia articles or whatever other use.
My photos of a particular place like New Jersey can also be in my personal photo subcat tree for New Jersey by year and county and maybe eventually for my own pix of Ironbound Newark or other neighborhood. Photos are the only kinds of images I make. Insofar as there ought to be author-oriented categories, I figure it is proper to build cat trees, eventually, for images by author and type, so as to help, for example, in comparing different image creators. Perhaps I'm doing that wrong, but if so, it should at most misguide my fellow constructors of personal, hidden category trees. Builders of public, purely topical cat trees should not follow that example. Perhaps I ought to put some such warning on mine. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:48, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • FWIW I’ve seen Photographs of X most often used to mean [Photos of] X by type of photograph: that is, the sub-cats in such categories tend to be for aerials, monochromes (b&w), HDR tone-mapping, panoramas, &c.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:25, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Odysseus1479: If you go to Category:Photographs of California, you'll see a lot of origin-related categories (e.g., Category:FEMA images of California). Is there any value in separating those out into Category:Images of California? Would people understand the difference? — hike395 (talk) 20:55, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is this discussion still open? When I see things like this, I tend to think they came when images were transferred from Wikipedia to Wikmedia Commons, and whoever carried out the transfer didn't add a more appropriate category. On occasions when I transfer pics from the main wiki, I don't use "images of," or "photographs of" anything, and the latter is only used for special occasions, like "Photographs of train stations taken by trains," or "Aerial photographs of Long Island," or something like that. ----DanTD (talk) 13:30, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The category "Eriocnemis aline" is the scientific correct one, the category "Eriocnemis alinae" is wrong. So E. aline should be deleted, E.alinae should be renamed E. aline and a new category redirect from alinae to aline should be done. Why? See Category:Eriocnemis alinae Discussion. Either I am too stupid to do it or I lack the necessary rights to do so. I could not rename alinae - because aline is already existing. I can not delete aline - I am no admin. I tried to rename aline and alinae - this worked - to make room to rename alinae to aline - but it repeated that this is impossible because aline and alinae are nevertheless already existing. I tried to undo the changes I made - impossible because "somebody already tried to undo this". Sorry for creating more problems - but I simply have no idea how to make this work. By the way: I guessed it would be some extra work, that was why I was so angry about the wrong decision what name to choose and what name to rediredt in the first place. @RZuo and Themightyquill: in enwiki we avoid disambiguator qualifier "genus", because it is accurate, but yet less recognizable compared to Category:Pipa (frog). Category:Pipa itself to be changed into disambiguation page--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:55, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If a category name has two meanings it is not a good idea, to give the short name to one of the meanings, as the files with the less notable meanings are always lost in the bigger category and you won't find them if you need them. Both content categories need a qualifier, to avoid unnoticed wrong categorisations. The short name should be the diambguation category, where you know that there should be no files at all. please delete; duplicate of Category:A larger history of the United States of America, to the close of President Jackson's administration (1886) Enyavar (talk) 11:20, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer to keep this one and delete (or redirect) the other, because it seems unnecessary to mention the year. OTOH if the same work appeared in multiple editions over a period of years, this cat should be a parent to the other. If there are different works under the same title (which seems quite unlikely in this case), they would be better disambiguated by author or publisher than by year. Moreover on both cat pages I see you’ve given a date of 1885; if there’s any doubt concerning the year, it would be best not to use it so definitively!—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:50, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No need for "the", cf. parent Category:People of Telangana. Fayenatic london (talk) 14:08, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've also tagged Category:Maps of the Hyderabad State, Category:Architecture of the Hyderabad State, Category:Art of the Hyderabad State, Category:Banknotes of the Hyderabad State and Category:Military history of the Hyderabad State since this would apply to them as well. -- Themightyquill (talk) 08:46, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, no need for "the". --Auntof6 (talk) 23:54, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moved to remove "the" from category names. -- Themightyquill (talk) 09:34, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why not redirect them? I don't see how deleting helps anything as people will still be searching for them and Hotcat automatically corrects it if you use the old name. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:44, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is this category about? Advisory bodies do not need to be about law; management consultants are about business, rarely about law. See also Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/04/Category:Management consultants. JopkeB (talk) 15:26, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Then it is also not correct on the Dutch Wikipedia, see (here)? There it is also in categories "Burgerlijk recht" (Civil law (common law) and "Bestuursrecht" (Administrative law)! Antoine.01overleg(Antoine) 17:03, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see in the Dutch Wikipedia that this category is about advisory bodies for the state/government, not in general; I do not see anything like Management consultants there. Solution: I suggest that we keep the parent categories about law, add one about government bodies because that parent category is missing (in Wikipedia it is "Orgaan (organisatiekunde)"; perhaps we can use Category:Government organizations), but remove Category:Management consultants‎ here because that is not about advisory bodies for governments. And perhaps we should search for other Advisory bodies (to governments), there must be more of them, in the Netherlands, Belgium and many other countries. JopkeB (talk) 13:56, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oké, That's good! And I have "Category:Management consultants" deleted. Antoine.01overleg(Antoine) 15:49, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Antoine.01 So we have an agreement about the solution and you already made a small change. Since you started this category I suggest that you at least help with the performance of this solution. I think this should be done:

  • Add a proper definition/description to this category
  • Add a proper category to this category about government bodies because that parent category is missing (in Wikipedia it is "Orgaan (organisatiekunde))
  • Search for other Advisory bodies (to governments) in the Netherlands, Belgium and many other countries.
  • Perhaps make subcategories by country.

@User:Antoine.01: Since it looks like there has not been any progress in a year, I suggest to delete this category, because:

How do you think about this suggestion? --JopkeB (talk) 12:00, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: This should be a DR, not a CFD. We can't delete files as a result of a CFD. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:16, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
files in this category are waiting to be deleted. I think we can close this CFD, because DR is done--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:04, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ShakespeareFan00, BMacZero, and Estopedist1: There is still one file there which does not appear to have a pending DR. Is that an oversight, or do we need to keep this category after all? Josh (talk) 05:01, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That file being sourced from the same publication that was removed in a DR should also be removed. The category can then be removed as empty. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:56, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved, The category can be kept. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:07, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

please speedy delete, thanks Enyavar (talk) 14:30, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Keep I think this name is actually better spelt than that of the cat that contains the content at present: states, years, &c. in the middle of a sentence or title should have commas both before & after.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:42, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Old maps of Virginia, in the American Civil War" as a category name? That seems to be necessary with the templates. Looks weird to me, but I'm not an American. --Enyavar (talk) 22:51, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, @Enyavar, I should have specified state names (or years) when preceded by place-names (or dates). So both Old maps of Virginia in the American Civil War and Old maps of Norfolk, Virginia, in the American Civil War are correct, but not Old maps of Norfolk, Virginia in the American Civil War. (This is not a particularly American rule; see the enWP Manual of Style.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:23, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So, your idea affects all categories that go "<xyz> by state(,) <zyx>", and you need to specifically change the underlying code of template:Us states to reflect that. Most uses are just "sport of <State>", so no comma is needed for "Category:Sport of Washington, D.C." . But then there are "Category:Washington, D.C. in the 1960s"; that would require a change to include the comma. So, how many categories that use the template with a suffix? How are we going to implement this conditional change? All the best, Enyavar (talk) 05:11, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comment @Enyavar and Odysseus1479: Regardless of name, the category is empty and will qualify for speedy deletion if not populated. Josh (talk) 03:51, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fred Kallaste is not notable person, but several images can be used at other topics, like cabaret or some events Estopedist1 (talk) 07:14, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fred Kallaste has appeared on television in Sweden several times most notably in advertisements for Nordea and Cherry. His appearances have included spoken lines. He has also appeared in hundreds of cabaret performances in the USA and in Sweden. I don't know where this uninformed opinion came from. Something personal going on? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:51, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
More importantly: whether or not a person is notable is irrelevant to there being a category with images pertaining to him or her. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 13:08, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
my answer also here: User_talk:Estopedist1#Notable_people_only?--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:07, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Keep @Estopedist1 and SergeWoodzing: If we have images of a person, it is desirable to have a category for that person to collect said images. If the images are deemed out of scope and deleted, then that category will be empty and speedy deleted. However, so long as the images remain, the category should remain. Josh (talk) 04:33, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kept: If we have numerous identifiable photos of a person, it makes sense to have a category. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:05, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Latin alphabet is preferred for categories. Jonund (talk) 12:31, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonund: What Latin name do you propose? – BMacZero (🗩) 05:47, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Holiness of Zion Association? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:35, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's one possibility. Agudat Kedushat Zion is also ok. The main issue is that we should use Latin letters, since most people can't read the Hebrew alphabet, and only become confused and feel alienated when they see Hebrew letters. I hope more people will give their opinion on what to call them. --Jonund (talk) 17:28, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Given this organization does not seem to publish in any language other than Hebrew, any English translation would be a bit of a creative work, so I think simple transliteration would be the better option, and "Kedushat Zion" seems reasonable. Josh (talk) 04:48, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
