Last year I wanted to start this task, but there is no tropical cyclone that time. Now it seems the time to continue the task.
The bot will:
- Visit tropical cyclone index page and get the recent tropical cyclones data.
- Visit all "Warnings/Cone Static Images" pages. e.g, https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_ep2 shtml/024116.shtml?cone#contents
- Fetch the hurricane track maps and upload it to commons. e.g., https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/EP02/refresh/EP022019_5day_cone_no_line_and_wind png/024116_5day_cone_no_line_and_wind.png → File:2019-07-02 EP022019 5day cone no line and wind.png

@Sandy14156, Keith Edkins, TropicalAnalystwx13, Xyklone, and Hdjensofjfnen: @Jeff G. and Matthiasb: Please give some suggestions. Thank you. --Kanashimi (talk) 21:45, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- Please make test run. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:13, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
- Coding now... --Kanashimi (talk) 22:51, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Sandy14156, Keith Edkins, TropicalAnalystwx13, Xyklone, and Hdjensofjfnen: @Jeff G. and Matthiasb: Done I upload the image as File:2019-07-02 EP022019 5day cone no line and wind.png.
- @CooperScience: Please give some suggestions. Thank you. --Kanashimi (talk) 07:08, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Kanashimi: Your ping to me failed. Where can I find info on the correlation of the depicted sustained winds symbols D, S, H, and M vs. numerical hurricane categories 1-5? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 16:42, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: It seems the NHC's forecast intensity is showing on the graph. Do you mean I should includes the information below on the file page?

D: Tropical Depression – wind speed less than 39 MPH S: Tropical Storm – wind speed between 39 MPH and 73 MPH H: Hurricane – wind speed between 74 MPH and 110 MPH M: Major Hurricane – wind speed greater than 110 MPH
And sorry that I can't find the hurricane category itself on the NHC pages. Perhaps @FleurDeOdile, EllaCyclone, and KN2731: may give some ideas? --Kanashimi (talk) 20:54, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Here is the link for the Saffir-Simpson scale on the NHC page. Hurricanehink (talk) 00:37, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
A new test run: File:2019-07-03 EP022019 5day cone no line and wind (EP022019 Hurricane Barbara).png --Kanashimi (talk) 01:20, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, folks. I don't think "EP022019" bears repeating in the latest filename. Expansions of those letters could be in en:National Hurricane Center, en:Tropical cyclone (with link from file description pages), en:Tropical cyclone scales (with link from file description pages), a template here on Commons used on the file description pages, or the individual file description pages. Those are minor concerns, and I Support approval. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:43, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- Looks OK for me, but will be good idea to account Jeff G. suggestions. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:25, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- What about other basins? There are tropical cyclones year round globally. Could it possibly import JTWC track maps for the WPAC, N Indian, S Indian, Australian Region, and SPAC basins as well? This would be really helpful. @Kanashimi: Hurricane Noah (talk) 04:03, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Graphical forecasts from all the agencies represented on en:Template:Tropical cyclone classification would be in scope. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:16, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Hurricane Noah: Of course the bot can import other maps. But sorry that I don't know what page and graphs to import. May you give some ideas? --Kanashimi (talk) 04:39, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Maybe graphs in https://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/jtwc.html , e.g., http://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/products/wp0519.gif and http://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/products/ep0219.gif are good start? --Kanashimi (talk) 04:42, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Kanashimi: Those are indeed a good start. I hope Barbara winds down quickly enough that she doesn't adversely affect Hawaii. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:22, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: I try to add some links to file description (see File:2019-07-04 EP022019 Hurricane Barbara 5day cone no line and wind.png). And for the explain of en:Tropical cyclone scales, if you can help me modify the page to the ideal result, I will change the code to adapt it. Thank you for the suggestions. --Kanashimi (talk) 14:13, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

Now the bot will also import typhoon track maps by Central Weather Administration: File:2019-07-04_TD09(原木恩颱風)_track_map_(zh-TW).png, File:2019-07-04_TD09_(MUN)_track_map_(en-US).png. --Kanashimi (talk) 14:13, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: Now the bot will also import Tropical Warnings from Joint Typhoon Warning Center: File:2019-07-04 JTWC Hurricane 02E (Barbara) Warning.gif --Kanashimi (talk) 22:32, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Kanashimi: Thank you, these look good. Thanks for cropping out the black bars at the bottoms of those images from Central Weather Bureau ROC, I assume they are always there and always all black in the original images. For the JTWC images like File:2019-07-04 JTWC Hurricane 02E (Barbara) Warning.gif, I think a simpler license is {{PD-USGov-Military}}. You may also want to consider categories for automatic uploads under this task and from these sources. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:15, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. and Meow: The original image of Central Weather Administration, for example https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/2019-07-04_TD09(原木恩颱風)_track_map_(zh-TW).png , is good. I wonder why it cropped after uploading. About Joint Typhoon Warning Center images, I use the same license as File:JTWC_wp0519.gif. But I don't know if it is suitable. The bot will aoto-detect categories and add them. See the source ocde. --Kanashimi (talk) 23:47, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

- @Hurricane Noah: Please give it a look if it is OK: File:2019-07-04 JTWC Hurricane 02E (Barbara) Warning.gif --Kanashimi (talk) 22:35, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's fine. Hurricane Noah (talk) 14:15, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
@EugeneZelenko: I have ran the code for several days, and it seems no more issues. Please check again if it is stable enough for production environments. Thank you. --Kanashimi (talk) 19:44, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- Could you please point to specific run? Last 500 bot's actions are earthquakes maps updates. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- For example, File:AL022019 Tropical Depression Barry 5day cone no line and wind.png, File:EP042019 Post-Tropical Cyclone Four-E 5day cone no line and wind.png and File:JTWC Tropical Depression 04E (Four) warning map.gif. --Kanashimi (talk) 15:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- Looks OK for me, but will be good idea to look why last file misses Licensing section and category. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:10, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
- I put it in the permission parameter. Or I should create a Licensing section instead? --Kanashimi (talk) 21:01, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
- I think tags in Licensing section are better. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:48, 17 July 2019 (UTC)
- Fixed OK. I have move them to the Licensing section. The change will be reflected in the new images. --Kanashimi (talk) 14:08, 17 July 2019 (UTC)
- Please add notice here when new file(s) will be uploaded. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:08, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
- @EugeneZelenko: I have upload a new sample: File:JTWC Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert WTPN21 map.gif, File:2019 JMA 1905 map (en).png --Kanashimi (talk) 03:53, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
