New system message for UploadWizard

Hi all! This is a request for interface admins: we're working on a specific message for when users upload medias with a wrong title, that would appear as a pop-up message when clicking on a specific link.

We would like to create a specific system message, maybe called MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename-short, that only shows the examples for good and bad names taken from MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename. The reason for this is that the full text is too long to be shown in a pop-up, and may cause that the user won't read it.

Is it possible to do so? Thanks in advance. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:30, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to not show the other information in that message, to be honest… do you maybe have some mockups or something similar (perhaps on Phabricator) to see what this would look like? Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:58, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

Mockup of new dialog message for wrong title of UploadWizard
@Lucas Werkmeister: hi, sorry for taking this long to answer, on the right you can find the mockup of the potential message. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 13:34, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
@Sannita (WMF): That looks ok, but doesn't mention the parentheses in the background. Will those be accepted? How about other matched delimiters like square brackets, braces, and quotes? Other punctuation?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G. We are only copying the existing examples in MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-filename into the example (maybe not all of them in this mockup, but still this is the idea). Sannita (WMF) (talk) 15:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Thinking about the implementation for a moment – I’m guessing MediaWiki:Titleblacklist would need to gain support for something like |errmsg-short= in addition to |errmsg=? Or do you want to hard-code “|errmsg= "-short"” as the title of the short message? Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:19, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
@Sannita (WMF): MediaWiki messages should be defined in the extension (or in core) and can have a local override. Why are you not doing that here? Do you have a related phabricator task? Multichill (talk) 17:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Problem with DelReqHandler

I wasn't sure whether to address the problem here or at COM:VPT, but since it's about a script only admins use, I'll ask here.

Simply put, at some point today DelReqHandler stopped working for me, and I don't get any Keep or Delete links on deletion request pages anymore. It was still working yesterday, when I was closing DRs and deleting files. And I don't remember missing the links earlier today when posting new DRs.

At first I thought I had somehow misadjusted my web browser, but I've tried three different web browsers now, also with all extensions disabled, and it still won't work. And yes, I've enabled the gadget, in fact I've disabled and re-enabled it.

Is DelReqHandler still working for everybody else? I noticed that a new MediaWiki Version was deployed to Commons today (COM:VPT#Tech News: 2024-21). Could that be a cause for my problems? --Rosenzweig τ 20:32, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Per Special:Version#mw-version-software and mw:MediaWiki 1.43/Roadmap, Mediawiki 1.43.0-wmf.6 was installed at "all non-Wikipedia sites" (that includes Commons) today. --Rosenzweig τ 20:44, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
The not / done links from UndelReq (at Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests) are gone too. --Rosenzweig τ 20:47, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
It's broken for me as well. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:54, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I did some more testing, and apparently something else also mentioned at COM:VPT, mw:Heading HTML changes, is the culprit. My usual skin is Monobook, and after changing that to Vector (2010 or 2022) or MinervaNeue, the links were back. Going back to Monobook, they vanished again. It appears the affected scripts need changes, because the other skins will follow suit with these heading changes. There's a whole thread at phabricator:T13555, but that's too technical for me. --Rosenzweig τ 22:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Can confirm, broken for me too. Affected is the monobook skin, which I use and prefer, in Vector it works. Don't know if phabricator:T13555 is the correct ticket for this.--Wdwd (talk) 12:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
1 for me. I tested this issue on Chrome and Firefox. Monobook and Timeless are affected. It works on all other skins. Yann (talk) 16:33, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
Per the TechNews (linked above) Timeless, Modern, CologneBlue, Nostalgia, and Monobook are affected. Though I'm not sure if you can even still select the middle three. --Rosenzweig τ 16:37, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
Same problem for me (using Monobook; also with Timeless). --Túrelio (talk) 07:58, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Is anyone knowledgeable enough to change these two scripts in a way that they will work with these heading HTML changes? Those changes are announced for the rest of the skins as well, so both scripts will break for everyone at some point. --Rosenzweig τ 17:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Rosenzweig @Wdwd and everyone, I made an attempt to fix the script: [1]. I am however not very knowledgeable about how it works, and I'm not able to test it end-to-end here, since I'm not an admin. Please double-check if it works correctly now (both on MonoBook and Vector). Matma Rex (talk) 19:15, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello Matma Rex,
thank you! I've tested it with Monobook and Vector 2010, and everything worked as expected. If it's working for everybody else too, MediaWiki:Gadget-UndelReq.js could be fixed the same way. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 19:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
@Rosenzweig I gave that one a try as well: [2] – please test. Matma Rex (talk) 20:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
@Matma Rex: That one worked with Vector 2010, but not with Monbook. While the not and done links are shown and a pop-up text box to enter the closing rationale appears, I got a TypeError: this.domElements[2].find(...).eq(...).attr(...) is undefined when actually trying to close the request. --Rosenzweig τ 12:30, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
@Rosenzweig Oops, I missed a spot, thanks for testing. Try now: [3] Matma Rex (talk) 12:59, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
@Matma Rex: Working with Monobook and Vector 2010 now. Thanks again :-) --Rosenzweig τ 13:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
@Matma Rex, the fix in [4] used in Monobook worked for me as well, thank you.--Wdwd (talk) 09:37, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

User persistently removing DR template

Hey, I've recently nominated the file File:Noah D'castellano.jpg for deletion here. The uploader has repeatedly removed the template ([5], [6]) even after I warned them on their talk, and now is resorting to disruptive behaviour such as this Commons:Deletion requests/User:Cakelot1. Open deletion requests (FOP cases)

I wanted to point to some open deletion requests I have started a while ago and which are in my opinion clear cases due to FOP issues, but noticed that there are even more requests. The ones I’ve started are all in category French FOP cases/pending, but only two of them are from me (coincidentally the two first ones in the moment). There is also the parent category FOP-related deletion requests/pending with indicators for non empty subcategories (these indicators could be coloured by CSS, but the string needed for this is unfortunately language dependent, so I cannot post a suggestion). I would be pleased, if someone would get active. — Speravir23:31, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

Renaming Template:GFDL-OpenGeoDB

Hi! Would someone be able to rename Template:GFDL-OpenGeoDB to Template:PD-OpenGeoDB? The template does not license files under the GFDL, so its name is misleading. "Inactive" license reviewers

Quotation from Commons:License review

"There is currently no defined policy for removal of license reviewer rights. In case of clear abuse or gross incompetence, a request for removal can be raised on the administrators' noticeboard. Inactivity is currently not a valid rationale for removal of license reviewer rights. (underline added)

Commons:Flickr files/reviewers states (at the bottom of the page) that "There are currently 513 users who can review files." However, there are some unknown number of "inactive reviewers" in the image-reviewer list here: [7]

For example, This volunteer has not edited on Commons for over 5 years. This volunteer has been inactive, since 2014. There are other examples of inactivity for lesser periods of time.

 • Can there be a policy created to remove license reviewer rights after a certain period of inactivity? They could always be encouraged to reapply, if they again become active.
 • In the alternative, could a list be created of "inactive" license reviewers who are inactive for a certain period of time? Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 01:31, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Given their significance I'd agree inactive license reviewers should be demoted. They could always reapply and be given the right immediately again if competent Bedivere (talk) 02:07, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
What is the harm this is intended to prevent? - Jmabel ! talk 02:25, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Seconding Jmabel. This seems like a solution in search of a problem. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 04:52, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
The only benefit would be that the statistic only shows the ones how are actually active. But for this we do not need to remove the rights. For the statistic we could just filter for thous how are active and not only active by regular edits but with license reviews. GPSLeo (talk) 04:57, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
i think it's a matter of keeping the user groups (visualised as lists) current. it's also pretty easy to re-grant the user groups when they become active again.
imo all groups except autopatrol should be removed after being inactive (not a single edit, not a single log action) for 10 years. RZuo (talk) 07:44, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

EC-Audiovisual delete request handling

The Category:EU Scopes - Information and education only is currently at 258 files with 11 uploaders, ranging from 203 files to 2 files. How do we handle mass deletion for these files? I feel a bit uneasy informing a user that 200 files they uploaded are not allowed.

Also, the content for this category will keep growing as files in Category:EC-Audiovisual Center review needed are processed and possibly identified as problematic. Note that we have had delete requests processed (and pending) already because of disclaimer on source page.

How should we proceed with this?

Thank you, and regards. // sikander { talk } 🦖 14:06, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

I do not understand that case. The linked copyright page on the sources makes clear that all content is under CC-BY unless otherwise stated. And the files I checked did not have a different license on their page. GPSLeo (talk) 15:04, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
@GPSLeo: It is confusing, unfortunately. For example
That is the problem and VRT ticket discussion led to EU staff just saying read the copyright policy. // sikander { talk } 🦖 15:15, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
You mean they use the term scope as synonym for license or usage conditions? I would understand the term scope as the topic of the photo. If we have contact to them through VRT we should ask them to use a clearer term. GPSLeo (talk) 15:20, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I think so. Of all the files I've reviewed the "Scope" text on individual photo pages is the only data that matches the "unless stated otherwise in the terms of use accompanying each individual file" declaration in Copyright policy. At the same time, User Zoozaz1 disagrees (see Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:EU Scopes - Information and education only). What do you suggest next step should be? // sikander { talk } 🦖 16:06, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

✓ Withdraw: I will contact EC-Audiovisual staff again and ask for clarification about "Scope" text and whether Commons can host "Scopes: Information and education only" and "Scopes: Non-commercial use, Information and education only" files. Marking this as withdrawn for now and will re-create, if needed. Thank you. // sikander { talk } 🦖 14:20, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Category rename by overwrite

Please move Category:Families of Viruses to Category:Viruses by family.

The description of Category:Families of Viruses mentions Template:Taxonavigation populating that category, but the subcategories actually end up at Category:Viruses by family.

I'm posting this here following the suggestion by @Billinghurst [8]. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:24, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Is there any reason this is not to be handled by a normal CfD? - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
It could be, which was why I rejected the speedy deletion and asked for more detail for the assessment, as a move and overwrite seemed more appropriate. The two categories have now been merged, and tidied, duplicates removed, and he "... by family" is more inline with our current naming philosophy and therefore findable through HotCat.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:07, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't really have a preference for either name. At first I tried to fix the template to categorize into Category:Families of Viruses, but couldn't figure out how. In any case, if it's to be renamed again, one needs to fix the template first. Enhancing999 (talk) 05:51, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

@Sikander: The way to manage sections not to archive is through use of DNAU, or to remove a date in the last component of that section, as the archiverbot looks for the date in the sig for that identification.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:10, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Santhosh kumar 001 uploads

Hello. Can an admin check the uploads of a certain Santhosh kumar 001 (talk · contribs)? I have tagged for speedy deletion two of their uploads (File:இருசக்கர வாகனம்.jpg and File:குழிப்பணியாரம்.webp) because of being apparent copyvios. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 00:45, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

A lot of these uploaded are copyright violations (I found three more). Deletion request for intermediate file

I almost always upload the original JPEG file straight from the camera and then usually one or perhaps more edited and enhanced files: cropped, lightened, sharpened, and so on.

This particular intermediate file added nothing really from the previous version: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/e/e0/20240604193001!Richard_Cluse_at_press_conference_hunger_strike_Berlin_3_June_2024.jpg and was timestamped: 19:15, 4 June 2024.

If some could delete the above version, that would be helpful. Otherwise it's presence is not really a problem. Just being tidy.

It could also be that the updating process is delayed somewhat on Wikimedia and that I was looking at stale versions and making incorrect assessments ?? Whatever the case, can you proceed as indicated. TIA. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:46, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

No reason to delete things like this. They take up just as much space on the server either way, and it's a waste of admin time to go around deleting them. - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Four files deleted in 2014

Hello. These four files were all deleted by Natuur12 in December 2014, because photos were derivative work of copyrighted 3D-artwotk in Finland, which are not in PD (yet). Files were uploaded in fi-wiki, but original or any license was added. So I'm asking somebody with access to deleted fiels to check the licenses, are they (as Commons uploader's other licenses at that time) "self|cc-by-sa-3.0" or did that user use some other license (and what was that).

cc-by-sa-3.0 Mchiriku

I'll appreciate if somebody has time for that. Thank you. --Htm (talk) 10:15, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Request file swap

Hello,

Can someone please swap the names of File:Al Khartoum Square in Alexandria - column - Arabic inscription.jpg and File:Al Khartoum Square in Alexandria - column - English inscription.jpg? The file named ...Arabic... is actually a picture of the English inscription, and vice versa.

COM:File renaming#File name swaps says that: "To perform file name swaps, you need the suppressredirect right."

Thanks in advance! Place Clichy 13:47, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

An English Wikipedia editor has raised a concern over File:Hunter Biden and Abbe Lowell in 2023.jpg and its derivatives; please see w:Talk:Hunter Biden#Infobox image and w:User talk:Hammersoft#Copyright violation. The files have been tagged for copyright deletion here since April (Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Born Isopod); ElijahPepe said they were contacting the Library of Congress for clarification but it appears that we do not presently have clear evidence of permission for these files. Can someone please take care of removing these files, and can we update the text of PD-CQ Roll Call? Ivanvector (talk) 18:43, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

As an update, I did not receive a response from the Library of Congress. This is a matter that the Wikimedia Foundation needs to contact them about. ElijahPepe (talk) 18:56, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
The copyright grant in question was for a particular set of photographs. That template itself indicates that "This work is from the Congressional Quarterly or Roll Call portion of the CQ Roll Call photograph collection at the Library of Congress." The LoC website links clarify that the dates the included pictures were taken are 'ca. 1960-2005, bulk 1989-2002' and '1950-2000, bulk 1988-2000'. It would be good to have more clarity for photographs dated 1950-2005, but this particular template clearly cannot be accurately applied to any image more recent than 2005 as the LoC indicates they can't have been in the two donated collections. --Noren (talk) 12:48, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
The metadata of the above mentioned File:Hunter Biden and Abbe Lowell in 2023.jpg says that the copyright holder is "2023 CQ-Roll Call, Inc.", and, according to FiscalNote, the company that owns CQ Roll Call Inc., they sell Roll Call staff photographers's work via GettyImages. This particular image, when purchased for documentations, noncommercial websites, etc., starts at $150 (Hunter Biden Dec 13, art.-no. 1845877166). I don't know whether the presence of the metadata indicates that Bremps bought the image and, if so, if using it on WP is legal. The metadata on, e.g., File:Andrew_Cuomo.jpg, one of the images uploaded by Born Isopod, indicates that it is a screenshot. Space4Time3Continuum2x (talk) 10:45, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
I did not buy the image, and uploaded it under the impression that it was in the public domain. If it's non-free, we best delete it. Bremps... 17:41, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

Would administrator mind taking a look at this File:Spanische Fussballnationalmannschaft Logo 2010 1star.svg? There are two potential issues with the file: (1) the most recent version might be a problem per COM:OVERWRITE and (2) the current and former version might not be PD-logo per both the COM:TOO US and COM:TOO Spain. I'm asking about this because en:File:Spain National Football Team badge.png uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content has been tagged for speedy deletion as orphaned non-free use. If the Commons svg version is OK as licensed, then the local non-free file would no longer be needed; on the other hand, if the Commons file isn't OK as licensed, then the non-free would need to be restored to where it was previously being used so as to avoid it being deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:00, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

File:Flag of Dardania.svg

User AceDouble (talk · contribs) is going on with a pointless edit-war about File:Flag of Dardania.svg. Time ago, I formatted the page and replaced the text with the template SVG, which already replaces and includes those categories, yet the aforementioned user keeps reverting the page since February. I don't see any reason to edit-war about that. Daniele Fisichella 02:23, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

@Est. 2021 You're the one whose making trouble for no reason. The flag is not fictitious while it's in use by the President's office since April 2021. Stop editing the file without the author's consent. 9 AceDouble (talk) 13:03, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

@AceDouble: I don't need your consent at all. We specifically have that template for both fictitious and proposed flags, that's why it's literally set on SVG and it hence transcludes Category:SVG proposed flags of Kosovo. In addition, the presidential use you refer to is totally unrecognized by Kosovo law, nor its unofficial use would constitute any recognition as state flag. Block of User:Jeanhousen

I blocked earlier today User:Jeanhousen. They run into some issues (not with me), and several users tried to resolve them at their talk page. (Note that one more topic was arxived earlier today). They ignored this and kept editing. After giving them two warnings, I blocked them in order to attract their attention to their talk page. The response was that they are not interested in discussing the issues. I am not going to unblock them for the time being, but if any other administrator knows how to resolve the issues please feel free to unblock. Ymblanter (talk) 19:46, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Are there any diffs of editing justifying this block? User_talk:Jeanhousen#Cimetières et patrimoine classé hardly justifies it. This is a prolific contributor and personally I didn't have any problems discussing with them. Enhancing999 (talk) 19:59, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
Sure, discuss with them, no problem for me. I did not intend this block to be indefinite. Ymblanter (talk) 20:05, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
I did. So it's not the user per se.
You blocked the user indefinitely, so it's for you to provide diffs justifying this.
Also, what is your take on users telling other users not to discuss with them. Is this acceptable conduct? Enhancing999 (talk) 20:09, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
The diffs are their talk page. Concerning your last point, I do not understand the relation to the block. Did I tell other users or advised other users not to discuss anything? Ymblanter (talk) 20:19, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

They were blocked over not responding to offensive remarks in relation to two issues that were resolved. [10]. I reported Carolus at COM:AN/U. Enhancing999 (talk) 21:31, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Do I need to provide diffs? But then, I guess you don't want any as you don't provide them either. Enhancing999 (talk) 21:37, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
I have very clearly written at the beginning of this topic why I blocked them. I now checked again, I did not write "I blocked them because they were not responding to offensive remarks". Ymblanter (talk) 21:40, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
It's me who qualified the thread you were pressuring Jeanhousen to respond to as having an offensive comment. From my comments above and my report at AN/U, this should be clear to you.
The old thread was resolved, at least if I read JmH2O above. The same issue seems to apply to the Denmark description.
Is there a particular reason why you chose to intervene in this issue and pressure the user? I don't think this was report here or on AN/U before and even your comment at 21:33 seems unprofessional. Enhancing999 (talk) 21:50, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
I am sorry but what seems unprofessional to you does not seem to be unprofessional to me and to other users in this thread. The user consistently got talk page comments that some of their issues were substandard. Not one, not two, but many over a long period. They did not react to these comments and continued editing. When you say "resolved" you mean other users reverted their edits and they did not edit-war. Good for them, but in order for these things not to happen again, they need to be addressed. I warned them once, I warned them again two weeks later. Nothing happened. The only reason to attract their attention to the talk page would be to block them, for which I have chosen an infinite duration having in mind that as soon as they acknowledge the problems at the talk page, I can safely unblock. Instead of acknowledging the problems, they preferred to you-know-what. As a result, they are now blocked indef with talk page access revoked. This is unfortunate, but this seems to be a logical consequence of their behavior. I came here - which was my good will, I had no obligation to do so - with the message that any administrator may unblock if they see it appropriate. So far no one did. Ymblanter (talk) 05:24, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
They edited the description for Denmark afterwards.
You haven't answered the question about what lead you to pressure this user to respond to a thread Jmh20 considered resolved.
Also, do you think the user should have answered Carolus' question about their nationality and native language and engaged in a discussion about that? Enhancing999 (talk) 08:36, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
He could have kindly refused towards me. And, that would be fine for me. But he should have reacted anyway: he lost an opportunity to show his good will towards the community. That's our point, you do not seem to accept. Carolus (talk) 08:41, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I am sorry you keep asking loaded questions and making false statements and do not seem to pay attention to my answers. I am afraid I am not going to respond to you in this thread anymore. Ymblanter (talk) 09:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Please confirm what you consider "making false statements". We are in process of reviewing your admin actions. If you don't want them to be reviewed, so be it, but then we might want to seek further community input. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:18, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
It is not about a resolved issue, he has to reply if someone asks a question. He refuses to reply, this is basic etiquette that applies to ensure that a project functions optimally.  Comment I've revoked the user's ability to edit their talk page per their last comment there. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 23:36, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Comment As a general comment, I don't know why we don't look to start with a partial block as we could look to block a person's editing by namespace if the problematic editing is namespace specific (Category:, File:) and allow them to address something like this thread. We do seem to throw down the gauntlet for a fight by a block, and that is often quite inflammatory.

In this case, it was clearly inflammatory, judging by the response, and the person does need a complete block. Does it need to be infinite? I wouldn't have thought so initially if we entered into an AGF conversation focusing on resolution. Now? I think this is where we are. I don't like losing people who were good editors due to intransigence.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:16, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

I would be fine with going for a partial block for files and categories, but I do not think this is my call anymore. Ymblanter (talk) 06:39, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
The user got some kind of non technical partial block in the form of a warning on their talk page. GPSLeo (talk) 07:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
What are you referring to? He was indefinitely blocked by Ymblanter after they pressured him when they didn't respond to Carolus inappropriate comments. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:48, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I refer to this warning issued one week before the block [11] GPSLeo (talk) 18:19, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Comment Seeing the last comment, blocking was appropriate. However I unblocked the talk page, and started an offer to solve the situation, by requesting Jeanhousen an apology (in French). I made it clear that further insults would lead to a global lock. Yann (talk) 10:05, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. Hopefully they will accept the offer and help us to resolve the situation. Ymblanter (talk) 10:10, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
The comment is inappropriate, but it came after Ymblanter went to pressure him and blocked them.
Apparently, the user was already subject to admin action I consider inappropriate by A. Savin before. A. Savin issued an admin warning after he didn't immediately receive a response to an editorial question and then went ahead anyways with their edit. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:12, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Well, you can contest something without making insults. Yann (talk) 10:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Surely. Somehow blocked users tend to not take their block lightly and without emotional involvement. The question remains about the two other involved admins and Carolus. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:21, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
It is clear that you place the responsibility with our actions. Well, that's your absolute right, and we all understand your point: you make yourself very clear. But this is where it ends: i don't agree with you, as far as I'm concerned. I will not answer any of your other questions in order to end this discussion. Have a nice day, and thank you. One comment and some incivility is not a clear reason to give an indefinite block. That feels like overkill. We usually give 1 week - 1 month blocks for incivility. What made this case so exceptional that it required more duration? Usually we only give indefs for repeated incivility, not a one-off occurence. There's a reason the metaphorical rope guideline exists. Proposing reducing block length to one week. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 16:34, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

 •  Support as proposer. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 16:34, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
 •  Oppose - COM:BP is the governing policy; it does not prescribe specific durations, but instead says "use a block duration that is proportional to the time likely needed for the user to familiarize themselves with relevant policies and adjust their behaviour". An indefinite block is not "overkill," as indefinite is not infinite, and the block can be lifted at any time once the user has indicated the issue is understood and has credible commitment that it will not continue. Where is any evidence a user who believes this is acceptable will magically have a change of heart in a week, or that they have any interest in familiarising themselves with relevant policies and adjust their behaviour? Changing this block to a week makes it punitive rather than preventative. Эlcobbola talk 16:52, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
 •  Oppose any unblock or shortening -- of course is the permanent refusal to discuss and answer legitimate requests nothing else than repeated incivility. We don't need toxic users here even regardless of otherwise productive work. --A.Savin 16:55, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
 •  Oppose I agree with my fellow colleagues, the block is not meant to be infinite, but it was well warranted instead of a short term one. I do understand the point of Matrix though. Bedivere (talk) 17:04, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
indefinite block is too much for some incidences of removal of text. RZuo (talk) 17:34, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
The issue now is not removal of text, but insults. May be the initial block was harsh, but given the last comment, an indefinite block is now appropriate. Yann (talk) 18:09, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
This is how some other Wikis treat blocks. But I think that leads much more hostile environments than we have on Commons. Our current way we do this with infinite block and fast unblock if the user convinces us that such things will never happen again is much better. GPSLeo (talk) 18:26, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jeanhousen&diff=prev&oldid=885121565 was way out of line. If the user will not acknowledge that, then they should be blocked for at least several months, if not indefinitely. Closing my own DR

I know there was some recent back-and-forth about when it is and is not appropriate to close your own DR as "delete". I did not find the guidance there terribly clear. Is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Soviet antifascist and anticapitalist poster by Iosif Ganf.jpg clear-cut enough that it would be OK for me to close it as delete, or should I wait for another admin to get to it? (Not asking for someone to act right now on that particular DR, just trying to clarify where other admins draw this line.) - Jmabel ! talk 05:04, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Whereas this is a clear-cut case I would still wait for a week and leave it to another admin. I personally think it is fine to close own deletion nomination as delete only if it is equivalent to a speedy case (for example, a file was nominated as suspicious copyright, and a source was found during the nomination which would make it eligible for speedy). This nomination is not a speedy case as it involves application of a (difficult) copyright law and adding the page to appropriate category. Ymblanter (talk) 05:29, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Hide file history

I accidentally made a mistake in adding a profile URL as source for a VTRS image (permission text has already been sent to VTRS team) and the author has asked to hide the source link. Can an admin please remove the first version of this file: File:2024 Toronto—St. Paul's federal by-election.jpg that has link information, and also adjust the history so the old version of the file and changes is not visible. I'll be more careful for future uploads. Thank you so much! // sikander { talk } 🦖 02:50, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Image deletion?

Hello, I have sent 3 emails to oversight since February that never received a response, and opened a deletion request on June 8, what does it take to get anything done around here? - Adolphus79 (talk) 16:55, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Administrators have a backlog of DRs going back to March. And your request is complicated by the fact that the file in use. Abzeronow (talk) 17:32, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
A 3-month backlog at Oversight is... kinda scary... - Adolphus79 (talk) 23:45, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't see the Oversight mention. I don't think there's a backlog there. Abzeronow (talk) 00:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
So, my requests were simply ignored, forcing me to post publicly, adding even more links between myself and the image... awesome... - Adolphus79 (talk) 02:19, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
✓ Done. I closed the request. In my opinion anonymizing is not needed, although if somebody will anonymize the file, I'm not against it. Taivo (talk) 09:36, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Adolphus has been blocked for disruptive behavior, as they called your actions "bullshit", calling me a "poor excuse of an admin", and edit warring on the deletion request. I think it is obvious they are here not to help. Sad coming from an user who has been around for 16 years. Bedivere (talk) 17:34, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

I have received an email from Adolphus requesting help. It was not an unblock request, but they state they walked away after the block, and didn't make the IP edits. (EDIT: I have received a clarification that they felt they could not make an unblock request because their talk page access was blocked. I'll respond to them later today by e-mail.) @Elcobbola: Abzeronow (talk) 20:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

I would not mind shortening the block if these other edits weren't indeed theirs. Bedivere (talk) 21:24, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
I believe them when they're stating this. Abzeronow (talk) 18:23, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
I'm not sure why I was pinged. If it's related to a CU, I cannot make a check or comment that would have the effect of connecting an IP address to an account. Эlcobbola talk 17:50, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I realize my mistake on that. Adolphus was stating they had their block lengthened for IP edits that they say weren't theirs and they thought a CU should have been done before such. I also had wanted your input in general, since you are definitely more experienced in the unblock process than I am (this is my first involvement in that area). Abzeronow (talk) 18:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

What is there in the way of Arbitration around here? I am concerned about an admins future use of the tools, after they have failed to show understanding of the policies they are enforcing. - Adolphus79 (talk) 19:36, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

It appears that NearEMPTiness (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log) has an ongoing problem with adding invalid licenses to files. I first noticed this with a group of railroad files they claimed public domain status despite having no information about original publication. They then made a a comment suggesting a license that is not even valid for US photos, leading me to check their recent uploads. The results are very concerning - they seem to upload a large number of photos with invalid public domain licenses. A representative sample from the last few days:

To me, this indicates that NearEMPTiness does not properly verify licensing before uploading. The comment I linked above, and the improper use of a number of different license tags, make me worry that they simply don't read the licenses at all. While some of these files might actually be public domain with additional research or a different license tag, it is the responsibility of the uploader to providence accurate licenses. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:40, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

@NearEMPTiness: at the very least, this requires that you explain yourself. I see you edit frequently, including quite a few edits since this was posted. Please respond here. - Jmabel ! talk 19:04, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thank you very much for requesting a comment. Please assume good faith and commment on the examples shown above yourself, or be a bit more patient, while other adminstrators are doing so. I am not aware of any rule that users need to comment on any observations published on this noticeboard, but so far, I have never been mentioned on this noticeboard. Although, some users think that licence issues are always black and white, I know others, who believe that they are differnt shades of grey. There is absolutely no need to threaten me as you have done on my discussion page ("explain what is going on here, or this account is very likely to be blocked."). Please judge fairly and communicate wisely. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 19:28, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
@NearEMPTiness: It was not a threat. It was stating to you that a pretty serious accusation had been made, of the sort that is likely to result in a block if upheld. What Pi.1415926535 wrote here seems to me to be concrete and specific enough to respond to , but if you'd rather not, fine; just don't say later that you were blindsided. - Jmabel ! talk 19:41, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Rollback additions of thousands of uncategorized images to Category:History

Hello. I've already asked on Commons:Bots/Work requests but am not getting any response. I'm also not a rollbacker so can't do this myself.

On 31 May 2014, @Mitte27: added thousands of images to Category:History, presumably to remove their uncategorized status. Example: Revision #880487992. Since then they have mostly remained untouched in this category. This is undesirable since these images appear to be categorized now, but they're really not. Would it be possible to rollback their changes? Thanks. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:53, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Aircraft vs. airplanes

I'm categorizing De Havilland DH.106 Comet into 1940s airplanes to distinguish between airplanes and other aircraft. But @Uli Elch: is reverting my changes as "faulty deletions". I was trying to diffuse the large 1940s aircraft into different types. They claim that I'm doing a "pure vandalism" to remove some entries from 1940s aircraft and put them under smaller 1940s airplanes. They have added that it won't be possible to "find individual aircraft/airplane types which have been arbitrarily distributed between two cats". 1940s airplanes is a subcat of 1940s aircraft. User:VNC200

Hello, This is a repprt for @VNC200. I will first provide 2 deletion discussions for reference.

Both the cases are nearly same. I uploaded a file, VNC200 a bit later uploads an exact copy of it. Nominates my upload for deletion under duplicate criteria. Despite him uploading after me. Now the first deletion discussion where my upload was deleted shows that the admin @Billinghurst clearly said that VNC200 did a bad faith editing and his actions were against the community guidelines. But my copy was deleted only bcoz his was in use on Wikipedia. Now the same thing is happening again. I uploaded a file. VNC uploaded exact copy some time later and has now nominated my version for deletion claiming it to be duplicate despite him being the one to upload later. Things don't stop here. I advised him against doing so at his talk page. But he doesn't seem to be listening to advises and adhering to rules. Also an example of edit warring/vandalism can be seen in revision history of the duplicate file where a bot tagged his file for Speedy deletion under duplicate criteria. But he keeps on removing it every time he logs in. I would request the community to please resolve this issue. I can't just let my legitimate uploads being deleted without fault. Dick Schoof images

Hi! There has been a recent influx in uploads of the official portrait of the new Dutch PM Dick Schoof. I believe it is the same user:

 • User:Auguste Comte Lover uploaded a cropped image yesterday at 14:48, and five minutes later an anonymous user places it on the English Wikipedia (see here)
 • User:AragostaDeGamberis uploads another image again today (can't find the timestamp anymore), and the same anonymous user places it again (see here)
 • User:Weber Johnson uploads the first image again, and the same anonymous user places it on the Italian Wikipedia (see here). The user page of Weber Johnson also suggests the user is aware of the copyright issues.

Would it be possible to block this user? And would it be possible to make sure these pictures are not uploaded anymore without admin approval? Overwritten file

File:Ph seal masbate.png looks to have been overwritten back in July 2018. No changes were made to the file's license or description; so, there's no way to no whether the originally added license still applies. The newer version was also uploaded by the same person as a flag (File:PH-MAS Flag.png) but that's incorrectly licensed. I tried to check the official website for en:Masbate, and found the new logo being used in November 2016, but can't find anything more recent. Anayway, it seems that the logos are different enough for the file to be split, assuming the licesning is OK for each. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:56, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

I have reverted to the original file per COM:OW. If the same licensing applies, the replacement should be uploaded separately. Bedivere (talk) 03:24, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Я впервые на Вики. И не совсем поняла где этот шаблон найти? Чтобы уже правильно сделать.
Подскажите, в какой из этих категорий нужно внести правку по координатам? На странице файла я нашла редактирование:
 1. Краткой подписи
 2. Краткого описания
 3. Лицензирования

New ANU guideline

I think we need a guideline for the Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. In the past there were many reports on cases they would not require any admin action and could have been solved on other discussion pages. And there are many cases where there was a reason for the report and the discussion on the page ran totally out of bound sometimes leading to a block of both sides. Therefore I think we should add these two rules:

 • Talk before: Before reporting an user on the page you have to talk to them on the problem on another discussion page first. This is not needed for cases of harassment, insults or similar.
 • Do not respond: The user on whom the report is must not reply to the report until an admin asks them to share their view on the complaint.

What do you think on this? GPSLeo (talk) 07:36, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Support. The first requirement is already present in the 1st line of the Notes on COM:ANU. However, the bolded "command" "Talk before" might be helpful to really get through to the posters. --Túrelio (talk) 07:54, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Support per Túrelio. Regards, Aafi (talk) 15:16, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
 •  Oppose - As noted above, the first is already present as the very first bullet: "Before reporting one or more users here, try to resolve the dispute by discussing with them first. (Exception: obvious vandal accounts, spambots, etc.)" If bolding or other emphasis is desired to make if more prominent, just make the change. If users already ignore the existing instructions (of course, they do) adding even more instructions resolves nothing. The second, that users accused of disruption rising to the level of requiring admin intervention, the very premise of ANU, require admin permission even to respond to the public concern is absolutely absurd, fundamentally unfair, and seeks to make admins "super users". You may not speak in your defense unless another user says so? This is a grossly ill-considered suggestion. Эlcobbola talk 15:38, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
 •  Oppose strong oppose to point 2. Although I'm an admin so I guess I'd be exempt from the effect of this unless it was reworded as "uninvolved admin", this is a recipe for allowing people to make a misleading attack on someone and giving them no chance to defend themselves. Imagine not being able to say, for example "If you look through the history you will see that this person has altered the exchange in a misleading way" or "for those who are relying on Google Translate, where it says he called me a 'butterfly' he was actually using a homophobic slur. That is what I was responding to."
Also, if people can't respond directly, we are going to see a lot more tit-for-tat AN/U threads.
On the other hand, I think it is reasonable for an admin to tell the subject of an AN/U (or the complainant) that they are going on at excessive length and should confine their further comments there to when they are directly asked for a response. - Jmabel ! talk 17:35, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Maybe a short explanation on this point: My idea was to handle this a bit more like it would be done in real world equivalents to this process. There is always a moderator hearing what one side says and then asks the other side for a general statement or a statement on a specific question. And for us it is also good to slow down the process as there are often reports and then long discussions of the involved users before any other person read this report. If the problem can be solved without a third party moderation we are back to the "talk before" rule. GPSLeo (talk) 18:39, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Oppose it is kinda unnecessary. system is working already. people still gonna got banned or still making topics without asking first to other party. nothing will be changed. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 22:34, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Is there a reason not to? The press has widely reported roughly where the shooter was from. A ZIP code narrows this down only to an area where about 30,000 people live. Presumably, it remains our default not to censor without a specific reason. That said, if there was a broad consensus to censor further in this case, I wouldn't bother opposing it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:15, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

It isn’t enough to check whether the new wikitext includes the template (or one of its various spellings) but the filter must also check that the template wasn’t there already. One way to do that is indeed to read added_lines (as the filter used to do previously). --Geohakkeri (talk) 10:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Restricted permission to create Data namespace files?

I'm enriching information about the archaeological site of Dura-Europos, and working thorugh the process of creating geoshapes for individual buildings within the site for map visualization; I have successfully created these shapes previously in the Data namespace on Commons and connected them to their WD items and Pleiades records. However, upon trying to run through my usual workflow yesterday, suddenly I'm running into an unexpected message when I try to select a new name in the Data namespace: upon selecting a namespace that I expect to be free (as per my usual process), I get a message that I don't have the "permission to create this page". (See screenshot). This is new, and not a prompt I have experienced before, and I'm especially surprised since I just uploaded a geoshape using the same workflow only a few hours prior! User:Yann and wheel-warring

(This could be a user problem as well, but I think it's a better fit here).

Yesterday, I closed two deletion requests concerning Studio Harcourt photos as Delete with the rationale per nomination. Harcourt photos were declared to be collective works by a French court, which means they are in the public domain in France 70 years after first publication. This photo is less than 70 years old, and it will be protected in the US until the end of 2052. (see [15] and [16]) and deleted the files.

Several hours later, Yann undeleted the files, completely reverted (effectively removed) my changes to the deletion requests and replaced them with his own closures, with the rationale Kept: The French state bought the photo archives of Studio Harcourt in 1991 and released them under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. He also came to my user talk page (after he had already reverted my closures) and told me that As per the discussion in Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Tisourcier, Harcourt photographs taken between 1934 and 1991 are not under copyright per ticket:2020112910005534. Which is notably a different claim and not the same he used to close the DRs after reverting my closures.

Now I'm perfectly willing to discuss both these claims and the general copyright status of the Harcourt photos, and have in fact right now started a discussion at COM:VPC#Copyright status of photos by French photo studio Harcourt.

BUT just reverting another admin's DR closure which you don't like and replacing it with your own is not OK. That is wheel-warring and should not be engaged in. It simply cannot be the way we interact with each other here, and it is a profoundly disturbing way to treat a colleague. The proper way to handle something like this is to ask the admin in question to reconsider, and if that doesn't change things, take it to another venue like (in this case) a undeletion request or another appropriate forum. All things Yann should know. I've already asked him (on my user talk page) to do that, but he did not. So I'll ask him here again to undo what he did in this matter and follow a proper course of action. I realize Yann is a very prolific admin and valuable for Wikimedia Commons, but that does not mean he should get away with blatant actions like this. --Rosenzweig τ 09:36, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I agree with you @Rosenzweig here completely. Reversion here is not a good step to begin with, simply because one disagrees with the closing statement of the admin. A simple way forward was to ask and I'm sure Yann knows it more than me. It is really not okay. I'd really appreciate him revert both of their edits and continue with the discussion and let uninvoled admins handle it. Regards, Aafi (talk) 09:53, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I agree with Rosenzweig, too, and I also respect Yann's many very valuable contributions to Commons a lot. But Yann has also a tradition of quite forcefully trying to push through things according to his opinion, sometimes making proposals and then deciding himself that they're accepted and implementing them. One example is here on my discussion page, another one I had not the energy to bring up yet is his introduction of his unclear proposed "orphaned old works" policy into COM:L#Old orphan works which makes things more muddled than helping in any way, but I digress... - Yann, I would recommend a bit more restraint in your actions when you disagree with your colleagues, because, as Rosenzweig says, we just can't work together like this. Gestumblindi (talk) 10:05, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I find it problematic that Rosenzweig voted in the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bergman Harcourt 1957.jpg and, despite the situation being controversial, closed it herself. That it's being reclosed by an admin that wasn't involved in it, seems normal. Enhancing999 (talk) 12:26, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
And if I had simply been asked to, I just might have changed that myself. I was not asked though. --Rosenzweig τ 13:39, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
That's a fair point, Enhancing999; I myself have made it my personal policy to never close deletion requests where I participated substantially in the discussion (with an opinion / vote on the matter) , but I know that other admins (including Yann and, apparently, Rosenzweig too) don't see that as an issue - in Rosenzweig's place, I wouldn't have closed that deletion request after voting in it, but this doesn't make Yann's overruling of Rosenzweig any better (I see both things as bad style). Gestumblindi (talk) 18:09, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi, These deletions were just wrong. It is very sad that Rosenzweig doesn't recognized that, and instead posts here. Yann (talk) 14:13, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
On this, Yann, I believe we are discussing a different thing and not if the deletion closures were right, but if the reversion without interaction with the closing admin, was fine or not. Regards, Aafi (talk) 14:33, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I see that you also posted to VPC. I am fine discussing the copyright status of these files. But what's the point to duplicate the issue here? Yann (talk) 14:21, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Yann: The VPC thread is about the copyright questions. This thread here is a complaint about your behavior in this matter and also asking you to undo it. --Rosenzweig τ 16:11, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
OK, I will undo my closure and delete the files, if the discussion on VPC shows that they can't be accepted on Commons. Yann (talk) 16:19, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Yann: I think it is very likely you are right on the substance of this, but also absolutely clear that you went about this wrong. Step one should have been to contact the closing admin (Rosenzweig), discuss with them and try to get them to revert themselves. Failing that, you probably should have started an undelete request. What you did comes off as "I'm more admin than you." - Jmabel ! talk 17:31, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I can understand your point of view, but I feel it is very bureaucratic. Now you ask me to delete again this file, and to request undeletion, even when you recognize that it will finally be undeleted? Yann (talk) 12:41, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Considering that there is an extensive and ongoing discussion at the VPC section, I would suggest restoring the original closure message, leaving a pointer to the VPC section in the DR, with a note somewhere saying something along the lines of "the outcome of this deletion request is challenged and being discussed at __". I think the file can stay during the discussion temporarily, and permanently if the outcome is "keep". (If anything, having the file visible helps the discussion.) whym (talk) 03:09, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Or: Will Yann and Rosenzweig offer to retract their closures and post votes/comments there instead? If both answers are yes, then it seems appropriate to do so, reopen the DR, and have a third admin to close (after waiting to see if additional comments are coming there). whym (talk) 01:54, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Sure, I would. Basically this question will need to be decided for all Harcourt photos at the VPC discussion anyway. --Rosenzweig τ 10:46, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
OK. I reverted my closure. Please note that similar DRs were closed as kept by other admins, i.e. Commons:Deletion requests/File:MarinaVlady-1952-Harcourt.png. Yann (talk) 12:40, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Okay, here's another case, I believed that Yann (talk · contribs) wrongly closed Commons:Deletion requests/File:28码脚型飞机杯(右脚).jpg, although the user has pointed out on Yann's talk pageUser_talk:Yann#c-Lemonaka-20240710095000-Dronebogus-20240708233700, they showed an w:WP:IDHT attitude. Lemonaka (talk) 07:42, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
There's no previous DR for this photo, if you searched DR Archive, and this closure is truly not good. Lemonaka (talk) 07:43, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
In that case (of a file kept currently), can you just request deletion again asking for a closure by another admin? Obviously we don't want to encourage asking for third, forth admins etc redundantly, but asking for a second opinion seems reasonable if the previous discussion was not substantial. Note also that this section is about "wheel-warring". whym (talk) 12:22, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Spamming of copyvio graphic war image (NSFW)

Hello, File:أطفال قتلى في هجوم حزب الله.jpg is a graphic war image that has been spammed crosswiki and is definitely a copyright violation, see the file description. RAN1 (talk) 23:19, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

Hope you dont mind me changing the title Trade (talk) 03:16, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
Just a FYI for any administrators. The uploader claims so be the photographer so this is either copyvio or the account is operated by someone who actually lives in the area Trade (talk) 14:06, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
There is now a Bild article with a different crop of what's on Commons, sourced to X. This is clearly a copyright violation, and الرجل من مجدل has reverted the copyvio tag twice without further communication. The file's still being spammed crosswiki too. RAN1 (talk) 16:02, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
"Without communication" is a bit of an exaggeration. The edit summary at [17] is a pretty clear claim of authorship. Other than an email that has apparently already been sent to VRT, I can't imagine what more they could usefully say. - Jmabel ! talk 17:06, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
I brought up evidence this is a repost from social media. Their reply was that exact same edit summary. That doesn't pass for communication. RAN1 (talk) 17:50, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
The copyvio tag was reverted again, this time from a Malaysian IP. I'll just request deletion. RAN1 (talk) 20:42, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Uploading image to sl.wiki

I am unable to upload this image to sl.wiki, unlike other images. Can you move it there? After that please delete my image here. Thanks, Janezdrilc (talk) 10:13, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

@Janezdrilc: I'm confused. This is clearly a modern building. Unless I'm very mistaken, Slovenia does not allow commercial freedom of panorama. Are you saying that sl-wiki does allow such images? I'm certainly not uploading an image there without understanding that policy. - Jmabel ! talk 17:10, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel: We tolarate one image sample of an object with protected rights just for basic illustration. Every such picture has tags of partially free content and prohibition of copying to Commons. Slovenian law allows free usage of those images for noncommercial purposes. For commercial purposes holder of rights must be asked. --Janezdrilc (talk) 17:34, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

@Janezdrilc: So I presume some particular templates are needed. You should probably ask someone on sl-wiki who knows exactly what to do here to do the upload there on your behalf, not someone on Commons. In any case, there is no administrative issue here, other than that this image will eventually need to be deleted from Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I have allready locally uploaded 3 similar images today, so licensing tags and categories can be arranged afterwards. It must be some technical reason I was not able to upload this one. Maybe upload time is exceeded due to a slow internet connection I assume (more than 3 minutes of uploading?). There was no upload problems here on Commons. --Janezdrilc (talk) 18:03, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

@Janezdrilc: I for one am not going to upload an image to a wiki in a language I do not speak, undoubtedly violating its policies by not using the correct templates, as my first edit on that wiki. There is nothing here where a Commons admin can do this more easily. Again, I strongly recommend that you ask on sl-wiki. If you really believe this is better done by an admin, ask an admin on sl-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 18:12, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Overwritten file

Would an admin take a look at File:Dr. Jagriti Luthra Prasanna.jpg. The file was overwritten about 30 minutes ago by the original uploader. However, the original overwritten 2023 version might be a re-upload of File:Roohanisisters.png deleted as a copyvio in February 2022. For reference, I was actually in the middle of tagging the 2023 version with Npd when the file was overwritten. The uploader seems to be the subject of both photos based on their username, and neither looks like a "selfie" so to speak, So, either the uploader isn't who their username implies they are or the subject of the photo is uploading the images. In either case, it seemed to me that VRT verification is needed at the very least. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Abusive ban

I have been the victim of really abusive administrative action, and I am not sure what to do. I have been a contributor to Wiki Commons (ProFReader) for many years, and I have really focused on architecture. Most importantly, I live in Charleston, SC which has (at least as of a few years ago when I last knew it to be true) the largest designated historic district of any city in the United States. There are literally thousands of historic and contributing buildings that receive protection according to city ordinances. Many years ago, I started adding photos of those buildings. I used existing categories or added new ones based on existing categories and was very consistent across more than 10,000 images. Each one was added to categories based on its location in town, the number of stories, the roof form, the piazza (our local term for side porches) form, and the building materials. And for buildings with confirmed construction dates, I used existing categories for those.

The reason I say all that is to explain that never, in more than a decade, has anyone ever raised any objetion to the categories I used. And, they are used by researchers. I know that because I have taught at the Clemson University Architeture Program here in Charleston and have explained to researchers how to create lists of, say, 3-story houses with gable roofs that were built of brick.

So far, so good.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a question on my page and asked me why I was using numneral-based categories (e.g., 3-story buildings), and I gave a brief reply. The poster never added a follow-up and never offered any reason for any other category usages either in his initial message or thereafter.

Then, a few days ago, without any further discussion or without any basis, he used a gadget to change all the categories. He not only added "Three-story buildings in the United States" or some variation on that, he REMOVED all of the categories I have very consistently used withut objection for a decade (e.g., 3-story buildings). I reverted those changes. Then, without any warning or any discussion whatsoever, some random admin scolded me for reverting the categories that what they had been for years. He added that such changes are expected to be discussed. (Ironically, that criticism was added directly under my explanation for my choice of categories and made no mention whatsoever of the first user who had initiated the wholesale changes.) Not only did he baselessly criticize my choices, he banned me from Wiki Commons.

I am a pretty serious contributor who steadfastly avoids any of the admin stuff. Until this encounter, I have never had any real issues with anyone and certainly not with any admin.

I realize this entire post is probably too long, but I wanted to vent about what is a pretty clear example of abusive and baseless administrative actions. It bears repeating that I used EXISTING CATEGORIES. If someone really objected to my choice to use "3-story buildings" instead of "three-story buildings in the United States," that is not really on me.

If my actions were really so horrible, then that's fine. I am happy to just wash my hands of the entire thing and walk away. But this is really an example of why regular users get fed up and quit taking part. ProfReader (talk) 20:19, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Usually numbers are used in categories. Look, for example, category:People by quantity and even category:People in beds by quantity. So in my opinion category:3-story buildings and category:Buildings by stories are correct and every subcategory in category:Three-story buildings by country should be renamed. A very lot of work. Taivo (talk) 09:09, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
It's not just 3-story buildings. It's everything in Buildings by stories. This is probably going to need some sort of bot work. However, I would advise getting consensus first at COM:VP as the "just do it, don't bother with consensus" attitude probably led to this inconsistency in the first place. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 09:18, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

"he banned me from Wiki Commons" And yet here you are, posting on Wiki[media] Commons. You have a clean block log. There is no mention of a ban, or block, on User talk:ProfReader#Removed category, which appears to be the discussion to which you refer (and where you appear to have posted while logged out; the IP also has a clean block log). The other users involved are User:Ivanbranco and User:Андрей Романенко. Did you notify them of this discussion? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:32, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
I got notified only now by your Ping. I didn't report any user for a ban. I just moved files from a category (3-story buildings) to a more specific one (Three-story buildings in the United States). I removed files from the more broad category in order to avoid over-categorization as I read here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories
To be honest I thought this was basic consensus on Commons and I didn't thought it was a problem at all. I acted in good faith, I always try to move files to generic categories to more specific one when I can. After my edits (hours of work since I don't know how to batch move files, I did it manually with Cat-a-log) got reverted I stopped moving United States files to avoid edit warring and moved on to categorize other countries. Again, I never reported this user for a ban. Ivanbranco (talk) 12:49, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

So, in short:

 • No ban occurred.
 • Files were (correctly) moved to more specific categories.
 • Those more specific categories probably should use digits rather than writing numbers out in English.
 • Nothing here is an administrative issue.

Fairly urgent gadget edit request (writeapi removal)

Apologies if I'm being excessively demanding, but a couple of hours ago I put an edit request at MediaWiki talk:Gadgets-definition that warrants fairly urgent attention. A MediaWiki upgrade has removed the writeapi user right, with the consequence that some important gadgets (including RenameLink) are not working. The fix that I've proposed is quite a simple one. --bjh21 (talk) 13:24, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

@Bjh21: I have made the changes. But I see that the removal of the flag has been reverted (for now). If I'm understanding correctly, It would be fine we keep the change, right? -- CptViraj (talk) 18:46, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
@CptViraj: I believe so, yes. It looks like the change will be coming back once it's been properly announced, so it's still useful for us not be using writeapi anywhere. --bjh21 (talk) 19:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
Actually, I think that reversion only affects the siteinfo API, and the removal of the writeapi right still stands. Compare Special:ListGroupRights with en:Special:ListGroupRights. So the change to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition needs to be kept. --bjh21 (talk) 20:50, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

Inappropriate way to handle a nomination image deletion

I'm deeply concerned about the way a deletion nomination was handled. Regardless of the correctness of the image license, I believe there was improper conduct by the administrator Bedivere. Initially, he deleted the image without closing the discussion, claiming that we could still discuss it. Then, he closed the discussion prematurely, before the mandatory 7-day period, even though it wasn't an obvious copyright violation. I appreciate anyone willing to look into this matter. Wilfredor (talk) 19:12, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

I see you dislike the outcome of the deletion request, but you can always request undeletion instead of coming here and attacking me by accusing me of "improper conduct". Firstly, there is no "mandatory" 7-day period, read again the policy. Secondly, the case is clear, as stated in the deletion request. Have you got evidence the photographs included in the bullet are in the public domain? I am waiting for it and I am open to restore it if you can provide evidence they are definitely in the public domain in Venezuela. In the meantime, the file is deleted as a copyright violation (COM:PCP). I deleted the file and left the discussion open so that you could provide evidence; you didn't; the file is deleted. Bedivere (talk) 19:16, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Additionally, he participated in the discussion and took sides, which makes it ethically wrong for him to be the one to close it. I appreciate anyone willing to look into this matter. --Wilfredor (talk) 19:17, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
How can it be "ethically wrong" to comment (not even voting) in the deletion request? I made an appropriate request that you didn't comply with.
Furthermore, now you are uploading actas without descriptive names. I have already notified on your discussion that you should upload them with appropriate names and not only you've deliberately ignored my message but continued to upload them as you did before. I urge you to comply with that request. It will not be me but any other admin may take action. Bedivere (talk) 19:21, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I renamed the files locally and stoped the uploading process to accommodate you, but I didn't see any obligation in the policy. Your behavior is starting to feel like wikihounding regarding the election topic. Wilfredor (talk) 20:40, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Could you please avoid making personal attacks? I don't really mind about the election files. I did not even ask you to stop uploading them. I just asked you to give them descriptive names. You've already uploaded hundreds which will need renaming! That is disrupting and I am only advising you not to continue doing it because action could be taken, given that you've already been warned. Bedivere (talk) 20:45, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Process may not have been great, but I don't see any potential admin action here to correct it. @Wilfredor: do you have something in mind? - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 4 August 2024 (UTC) Further: copyright status looks seriously confusing, and based on the precautionary principle it is hard to see how we could keep this: too many parties (so to speak) with a potential copyright claim on portions of the document. - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

BTW, After writing this entry here, a few minutes later, the administrator threatened to block me. [22] Looking for any excuse like "I don't like the file names"--Wilfredor (talk) 19:31, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Not a threat but a warning. Yet you still refuse to get the point! Even after warning you you continued to do the same thing! Bedivere (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Where is it written that I have to do this or else I'll be blocked? Wilfredor (talk) 20:29, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I suggest reopening the deletion nomination until an impartial administrator can resolve the situation and restore the file. Additionally, I recommend taking administrative action against the current admin, as I feel targeted. It is not a coincidence that after raising this issue, he threatens to block me over file naming conventions. I believe he is not acting in good faith and is misusing his administrative powers. Wilfredor (talk) 19:46, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
It will not be reopened. You are free to request undeletion if you provide evidence the file is in the public domain. Bedivere (talk) 20:21, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I find your behavior harassment, and if it continues, I will have to report it to the administration. Wilfredor (talk) 20:31, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
I understand you did not like that the file was deleted. Fair enough.
But my actions are far from being harassment.
And... you have reported my actions here, in the administrators' noticeboard. Bedivere (talk) 20:41, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
@Wilfredor: I am a presumably impartial administrator. As I wrote above, "based on the precautionary principle it is hard to see how we could keep this." If you have a case to make to the contrary, start an undeletion request. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

@Bedivere: can you explain how the filenames Wilfredor is using are poor enough to potentially merit a block? Admittedly, I've seen better filenames, but I've also seen a lot worse. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Jmabel, the filenames correspond to the actual voting places, and are named accordingly: Biblioteca, Centro Cultural, etc.. However the files are not of the actual voting place but of the acta. A more descriptive name would be, for example, Acta de votación 2024 - Biblioteca, etc.. I told them it was disruptive to continue uploading files with such undescriptive names. Bedivere (talk) 00:38, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
@Bedivere: I totally understand asking for better file names. I don't know whether you provided examples of how you would have preferred these to be named. Still, with all due respect, warning or threatening that this could be grounds for a block seems excessive to me. - Jmabel ! talk 03:12, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I considered that it was widespread, because they are way too many files that need correcting. That adds to the fact that they ignored my first message which was friendlier I think. At the same time, Wilfredor is a long-term user, they should know better though... --Bedivere (talk) 03:33, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
I am still waiting for the naming policy that I am supposed to add that you want, the files were well categorized and with an adequate description each one of them. Wilfredor (talk) 03:21, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
COM:FN. perhaps? Not to mention I already suggested new names: Acta elección presidencial Venezuela 2024 - Biblioteca, and so on. Bedivere (talk) 04:07, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
@Wilfredor: Right, COM:FN guideline.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:16, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
Yes, but it doesn't say exactly how it should be. The name is descriptive. Can it be improved? It can be improved, but it's not something that warrants a block. I think it's excessive. Wilfredor (talk) 10:43, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
You fail to see your error and that is not something for me to do. Bedivere (talk) 15:03, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
I fully understand my mistake in not adding more descriptive names. I let a robot upload thousands of images, it wasn't because I ignored you, I'm not saying that the names of the images are correct, but to threaten me with blocking is too much. The images had a good description and correct categories. I think that your response to blocking me was excessive. Wilfredor (talk) 11:34, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
The blocking policy is at COM:BLOCK. Administrators have discretion to issue blocks "for behaviour that has the potential to damage Commons or disrupt its collegial atmosphere" based on their own judgement. Though there is a list of common block reasons in that page, it's by no means comprehensive. Repeatedly ignoring administrator or community advice and warnings to follow policies and guidelines can lead to a block. Consigned (talk) 21:13, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Comment I don't see Bedivere participating in the DR beyond requesting people to provide evidence for their claims, or stating their pending actions as a determining admin. Ideally waiting seven days is the norm, though CV can be speedied. Not certain I agree with the thoughts about blocking, though I can understand the frustration on admin guidance being patently and repeatedly ignored, especially where it is going to make work. Com:UDR is the place for the conversation to repatriate the file. So I closely align with Jmabel's comment.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:19, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

It's surprising that after all these years, they decided to guide me right after a controversial deletion nomination. They directed me based on a nonexistent policy and then threatened to block me if I didn't follow their "friendly" guidance. Wilfredor (talk) 03:27, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Overwritten file

Would an admin mind taking a look at File:20180206 UM-NW Benny The Bull 7DM27126.jpg? The first issue is that this is a COM:OVERWRITE with the cropped version being uploaded as an updated version of the original file instead of being uploaded as a separate file. The next problem is that even though COM:DM might possibly be argued for the originally uploaded file, there seems to be no way to do argue the same for the cropped and enlarged version focusing entirely on the mascot en:Benny the Bull per c:COM:CB#Costumes and cosplay and COM:DW#If I take a picture of an object with my own camera, I hold the copyright to the picture. Can't I license it any way I choose? Why do I have to worry about other copyright holders?. So, instead of splitting the file, simply deleting the cropped version might be all that's needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:46, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

The first point is not a problem here as the overwrite was done by the author one minute after the original upload. But there might be the copyright problem. GPSLeo (talk) 04:57, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Not sure what I (the photographer and submitter) need to do here. Either it is a COPYVIO or it is not. Let me know if there is a vote or something for me to take part in. You are free to revert the crop if that is helpful.-TonyTheTiger (talk) 05:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Agreed. The mascot is pretty much the point of the photo, so if that presents a copyright problem (probably better sorted out on Commons:Village pump/Copyright than an admin board) it has to be deleted.
Uploading first the original image straight from the camera and then promptly overwriting with the intended crop (or color rebalance, or perspective correction, or whatever) is best practice. I probably do this on over 10% of my uploads. Sometimes what comes straight out of the camera isn't what you really want, but it's great to provide it here that way, so that if someone wants to make a different derivative work they start with as much information (in the information-theory sense of the word) as possible. - Jmabel ! talk 05:48, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the input. My apologies for picking the wrong noticeboard. Since the overwriting isn't a concern, I will move this discussion to COM:VPC. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:20, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

Delete this obsolete file

I would like File:Rutherford scattering geometry 3.svg. It is an obsolete, unused variant of File:Rutherford scattering geometry.svg. It's not a big file but it nonetheless wastes space on the servers. Kurzon (talk) 20:19, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Performance, more generally

Starting a separate section because this is only tangentially connected.

@Matrix: I completely agree with you that there is no performance issue at stake in this particular matter (retaining files) worth considering, but (slightly off topic) it is interesting to see that essay, because of course a lot of things about categorization in particular appear recently to be very driven by performance: the concern that some images or categories are in too many categories, the concern over the many category links that appear in a typical Wikidata Infobox, the very fact of us building so many intersection categories because we don't have a decently performing category intersection tool. So I question whether that essay is as applicable to Commons as it might be to en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

Policy in terms of sockpuppetry

Dear all,

I tried to look for the Commons policy in terms of sockpuppetry but I could not locate it. This query comes as it has been disclosed here the accounts @محمد أمين الطرابلسي (created in 2017 but indefinitely blocked in 2022) and @JUVENISTA (created in 2018) belong to the same person. Would this be considered as sufficient for the link to be disclosed on the respective user pages? Moumou82 (talk) 18:31, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

The Meta CheckUser policy--mandatory for, and applicable to, all projects--includes "Note that alternative accounts are not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of the policies". The Commons does not currently require disclosure as long as the accounts are not used disruptively. Disruptive use (i.e., "abuse" rather than mere "use"), however, is explicitly disallowed by the blocking policy. Эlcobbola talk 18:56, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
And, in the instant case, evading a block is absolutely an abuse of multiple accounts. JUVENISTA is Confirmed and blocked. Эlcobbola talk 19:02, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

There is no option to say that you have not participated in either WLE or WLM. - Jmabel ! talk 18:09, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
The survey is mostly targeted for WLE\WLM participants. But your point is also make sense, so I added another option in the form. Thanks! OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:10, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Request for IP-block-exempt

I need IP-block-exempt for me and Arielaortizb (talk · contribs) for 10 days that we can upload pictures from the press office of the Venice Film Festival. Harald Krichel (talk) 09:50, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

All his uploaded pictures must be deleted according to the policy. He is a confirmed sock of user:Musée Annam (a global banned user). Nguyentrongphu (talk) 08:53, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

This deletion discussion has been stagnant for an entire month and appears to have an overwhelming consensus to keep. As I’m heavily involved here I don’t want to close it, so if an uninvolved admin could close it that would be great. Dronebogus (talk) 10:25, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

✓ Done DR has been closed as keep. Abzeronow (talk) 15:38, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

Can somebody please close this DR? The nominator (me) has withdrawn the nomination, and the only "delete" !vote has also changed their mind. --Rlandmann (talk) 23:19, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

[Urgent] Interface-Admin actions needed for Picture of the Year

Dear administrators,

All scripts from Picture of the Year have been completely rewritten this year thanks to the help of Ingenuity. The current POTY committee plans to launch POTY on September 15th or October 1st.

However, as long that these 3 edit requests are not fullfilled, it is technically impossible for POTY to run this year : edit request n° 1, edit request n° 2 and edit request n° 3.

I would be very grateful if someone could have a look into it.

Due to the urgency of the situation (POTY starting very soon), I'm posting this message here. Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards and wishing you a nice day -- Giles Laurent (talk) 20:29, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

@Giles Laurent: Assuming your links are correct, these need a someone who can edit in MediaWiki space. As a regular admin, I cannot. - Jmabel ! talk 22:16, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. Where can an admin with access to MediaWiki space be found? If you happen to know an active one, could you please ping him? -- Giles Laurent (talk) 22:22, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

Need someone here who has the permissions to edit in MediaWiki space. User:Steinsplitter can you do this, or do you know who could? - Jmabel ! talk 03:10, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Pinging also Multichill as you were the last person active on third link. Could any of the interface admin help us? -- Giles Laurent (talk) 07:29, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
✓ Done --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:05, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Some of the non-urgent, non-js, non-cs requests would be interesting to have too.

@Steinsplitter and Multichill: , could you please add "Ingenuity" on the MediaWiki:POTY/committee.json? Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 13:58, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination since 2006

Template:PD-Soviet has been nominated for speedy deletion on September 2006‎ but is still not deleted. How this can be fixed? Quick1984 (talk) 18:52, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

This not a deletion request for the template. This is a template to show that files uploaded with this template in the past are to be speedy deleted. But it is of course a question if we need this for over ten years. GPSLeo (talk) 19:09, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
I've added a header at the top to prevent further confusion. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:39, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
