English: Lucretia: Roman woman whose rape by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of the last Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus (R: 535-510 B.C.), and her subsequent suicide, caused an uprising led by her husband and by her kinsman Lucius Junius Brutus, which ultimately resulted in the fall of the kingdom of Rome and the establishment of the Republic. Lucretia's rape and suicide were a prominent theme in the arts, particularly from the 16th century onwards.
