English: Kyniska, Spartan royal family, raised chariot horses, but was not allowed to attend the Olympic games because she was female. Her chariot driven by a male won the τέθριππον event, "four-horse (chariot race)," in 396 and 392 BC, 97th and 96th Olympiads respectively in which she as owner placed first. She was over 40 at the time. The base of the statue she erected to herself at Olympia claiming to be the "first" female victor probably refers to the 396 BC victory, which is more "first" than the other. Only the base survives. Compared to the documented facts, the legend is entirely modern.
