Cross of Saint James (or "Sword Cross") in heraldry: A variant of Argent, a cross flory fitchée gules, with the vertical member representing a sword, with hilt at top in the form of an inverted "Panela", both side arms terminating flory

Español: La Cruz de Santiago es una cruz latina de gules simulando una espada, con los brazos rematados en flor de lis y una panela en la empuñadura

English: The cross is said to have originated from the legendary w:Battle of Clavijo (834/844) during which Saint w:James the Greater, the patron saint of Galicia, appeared to King w:Ramiro I of Asturias after he prayed for his assistance in leading the army to victory over the Moors. Spanish: Cruz de Santiago / Cruz espada ("sword cross"). A "Panela" (heart-shaped leaf with petiole pointing upwards) in Spanish heraldry derives from a legendary battle between the Oñacino and Gamboíno bands in the Sierra de Arrato in Alava, so bloody that the Zadorra River was stained with blood and the poplar leaves, covered in dust, were scattered over it
