Suggestion

Hi, regarding your comment in Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Böttingen-1997.jpg: I really think comments about old nominations don't belong in nomination pages of other files. It's just distracting from the nom discussion and really loosely relevant. I suggest you address me with similar comments on my talk page, and I'll answer there. FP nom

Hi W. this I don't quite understand. If it appears like I had spoiled the nom, I'm sorry. If you are not happy anymore with your camera, it's only natural. AFAIK, Wikimedia Sweden has DSLR's and lenses to borrow for free? Alternatively, crowdfunding might be an option? What would you say? I'd be happy to help. --A.Savin 21:37, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Oh A.Savin, don't be sorry, I'm really happy that you made me see and give in to the truth. If you saw the not so good quality, I'm sure other voters would too. You did me a favor. That is a little camera I always keep with me wherever I go. Many of my most interesting photos have been taken with it, simply because I had it handy when I saw something interesting or beautiful. For example that impromptu stop at the beautiful river. It has served me well, but it's time to realize that the bar at FPC has been raised so that I can't rely on it for such photos anymore. I will not give it up, simply not nominate photos I take with it at FPC; they will still be uploaded and available for articles in any case. For FPCs, I have the Panasonic. Even if it has the same small sensor it has a much better lens so it still works for taking good photos, but only for more planned photo shoots since it's too big to carry around all the time.
As for Wikimedia Sweden's equipment, that is not an option since I live on the west coast and those cameras are mostly used by the wiki-photographers on the east coast. Besides I would have to give them my real name if I wanted to borrow a camera and I prefer to select what wiki-friends I give that info to. As for your kind offer about crowdfunding, well thanks, but I'm far too proud to accept such a gift. I have a camera I can manage with. Of course I would love to own something a bit better, but some day I might be able to buy one myself. All the best, --Cart (talk) 22:07, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

FP category in nom

Hi, regarding this edit: I don't think mentioning a section in an FP category page has any effect. I remember trying that on several of my nominations and then found out that the files were just put in the regular unsorted section by the bot. It may be a very useful feature to add to the FPC bot, but as I said - I don't think it currently has any effect. Tomer T (talk) 21:59, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Tomer T, you are right as far as the Bot is concerned, but there are two other good reasons for placing the section in the mon. The first, which has previously been discussed and recommended here on FPC, is that it makes it easier for voters to have a direct shortcut to previous FPs similar to the nomination to compare with. The second reason is that since too many nominators are not sorting their own FPs, it makes it much easier for the person doing this task. It may not be that hard with this particular photo, but try some obscure plant or a photo of some nature reserve where the country of origin is not mentioned on the file page... In such cases you have to click back through the normal categories to eventually find which section to sort it in. So no, I'm not just being difficult, there is method to my madness. ;-) --Cart (talk) 22:13, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
I see. Anyhow, I think it may be a useful feature to add to the bot. Tomer T (talk) 03:13, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
I agree with you, it would be great if a bot could do that last part too. Problem is that the bot can't add new sections when a new country/object/species/family needs to be added because of a new photo. The sections are far too diverse on the different gallery pages to fit the bot code. For that we would have to re-write the entire gallery system. --Cart (talk) 10:20, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
In such cases it won't need to add a new section, because the section can be an optional part. The more problematic part maybe would be adding meaningful descriptions in the gallery for each photo - that's clearly a work for humans. Tomer T (talk) 10:34, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Yes, there may be ways to make the bot to do most of the work anyway. Unfortunately, re-writing the code is not something I know how to/can do. I only design some of the galleries and layout. Perhaps you could take this to the people who maintain the bot. --Cart (talk) 10:45, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Tomer T: While talking with Eatcha, one of the code guys here, about another problem I mentioned your idea and it looks like it might work. Fingers crossed! --Cart (talk) 11:16, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
That's cool! Thanks for promoting the idea. Tomer T (talk) 11:28, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Regarding this: see my comment next to the category section in the nom. The section is inexistent, so I didn't add it, but you're right - I forgot we told the bot will just ignore non-existing sections. Tomer T (talk) 12:38, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Tomer T, yes it is just for (human) convenience. Also, we might just as well be consistent and add the section to all noms, otherwise there will only be confusion about when to add and not. It is always best to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to code stuff on this site. Please forgive my long message, I know that you know, it is just a standard message I leave at all the noms I fix now to make people aware of the change that is made. Will leave a better one on the FPC talk page as soon as everything is settled. --Cart (talk) 12:50, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

The duvet cover

I was just about to add what would have been one last, futile   Support} for it when I saw that you had withdrawn it ... oh well.

I was wondering, however, if you'd thought about maybe adding some split toning to it? Just enough to give it some character. Daniel Case (talk) 23:56, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Daniel, nahhh... I'll leave it be. It wasn't "action-y" enough for the good people here. Fixing it up, I would probably have been said to over-process it. Sometimes you can't win, better to move forward. But many thanks anyway. :-) --Cart (talk) 00:04, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Agnes Monkelbaan, Geen probleem.

--Cart (talk) 16:47, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Denoise

Hi Cart. I hope you don't mind - I ran your nice jellyfish (FP nom on English Wikipedia) through my new Topaz Denoise AI software. I think it does a great job. Charles (talk) 10:40, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Sorry Charles, I don't think that experiment was a success. While the jelly may be slightly sharper, it also "sharpened" all the tiny debris floating in the water and that version looks like the image is riddled with dead pixels. Not an appealing sight. The jelly was sharpened, but the photo suffered and I'm not going to approve that. LIke with all new software, it will take some time to know how and when to use it properly. --Cart (talk) 11:46, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Question about the result of a FPC

Hello Cart,

I have a question about the count of the votes of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Featured_picture_candidates/Log/March_2020#File:Ornamientiertes_Altarkreuz_von_Hermann_Jünger_20200203_RAW.png. There are the votes of the JPG version missing. In my opinion, the pro and contra votes of the JPG alternative should be added, because the "alternative" isn't actually one, but it is the identical image, just in JPG instead of PNG (technical issue). Considering the new votes, one contra vote changed into a pro vote, a new contra and a new pro vote were also added. This would make a total of 7 pro and 3 contra votes, which would lead to a promotion. I would be grateful if you would help me to understand this process and review this case.

Thank you and regards, --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 20:20, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

PantheraLeo1359531 Votes are always counted this way on nominations with 'Alternatives'. You can check with previous nominations. It doesn't matter that it was "the same image" but with different formats. The votes are only cast on one of the formats, since the format of a picture is very important for how it can/will be used later once it is promoted. An FP is not just about the image; it is just as important with description, categorization, licensing and of course format, the whole package is considered. There have been several noms before this one with first tiff and next jpeg; png vs jpeg is relatively new. Same for graphic noms where svg is preferred over jpeg. Nominations with 'Alts' are always precarious to make since you risk dividing the votes, like it happened on this nom. Here is one nom that was all about the format: Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Global Temperature Anomaly.gif. If you want to contest this practice, you can ask what the community thinks about it on the FPC talk page. --Cart (talk) 20:36, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

A ping

BTW I know I just pinged you into a discussion, but I wouldn't actually recommend jumping in there. Quite the sprawling dramatic mess at this point. It's at the point that an attempt to remind people why they like Commons (cheesy as it may be) didn't seem like it would hurt. :) — Rhododendrites talk12:58, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Don't worry Rhod, I wouldn't go near that with a ten-foot-pole. ;-) But I was actually on my way to your talk page to drop an encouraging line or two for your efforts on diplomacy. With so many high-strung over-achievers in one place as Commons, it will be hard to make people sit back and just relax. Got an e-mail from another user yesterday saying that both en-wiki and Commons are affected by cabin fever. :) I agree. Best way is to take a few steps back right now. Enjoy a good cup of tea (do we have any FPs of cups of tea?) and do an inventory of your home for great things to photograph. Perhaps some people would be interested in a Commons forum on home-studio photography and how to make good photos with few resources. How to set it up, how to make the light good/interesting, good angles, moods, etc.

Three type of lights for photographing house plants
Not anything fancy, just a forum to ask, share ideas, whatever. Perhaps some small competition along the line.
Something like:
Did you know your computer screen is also your photo studio and light box?
Set the color of the screen to get good backgrounds when photographing your house plants. It will give you a more homogeneous background than a piece of paper.
  • The first photo is taken in the light from a window with a white paper as background
  • The second photo is taken in the light from a window, in front of a computer screen set to all-white, and with a flash
  • The third photo is taken in the light from a window, in front of a computer screen set to all-black
And be sure to dust or give you plant a shower before taking the photo. Every dust spec will show in the photo. :)

Goedenavond mevrouw Carter

) --Cart (talk) 18:48, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Viticulture and vinification

Hey Cart, I'd love to have a feature picture category (or section) for wine growing and wine making. It makes me sad to see my images from Sonoma and Napa County listed under "plants" or "other". As you're the expert for how to sort featured pictures – could you please help me with this? All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:17, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Frank Schulenburg: Good idea. Yes it's a shame all such photos related to one subject should be scattered around the galleries. I'll give it some thought. I'm sure the solution will sound a bit boring, like all such thing do in the galleries, but that's a minor issue. I'll get back to you. --Cart (talk) 22:30, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Ok, thanks! I'm currently in Chico, where my wife grew up and went to college. Being surrounded by rice fields and almond orchards for the foreseeable future (going back to the Bay Area doesn't seem like an option), I'll certainly add more to the "agriculture" section (which is almost empty for the United States). I'm wondering whether we should re-think the way we define that section as well ;-) --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:34, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Frank Schulenburg: Sounds nice! I was briefly considering doing it "by crop", but it can sometimes be hard to tell exactly what sort of crop is planted and there are also so many other aspects of agriculture. Countries are easiest, no need to make it more complicated than we have to. --Cart (talk) 22:39, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Ideally, we'd also add agricultural machines and vehicles to that new "agriculture" category. Sorry for having one wish/idea after the other ;-) --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:41, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Frank Schulenburg: Could be, could be... Go easy on a poor gal, will ya'!   The galleries should be easy to find stuff in so unless one section is overflowing with say agricultural items, it isn't "broken" yet so no need to fix it. Galleries should not be created just for the fun of it. --Cart (talk) 22:45, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Hahaha, yes, I will. – Something around "Wine growing and wine making" as a subcategory of "Agriculture" would do for the moment :-D --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:47, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Frank Schulenburg: Ok, so not exactly what you might have asked for, but it works better this way since there are other food processing than wine making. See: Commons:Featured pictures/Food and drink#Food manufacturing and cooking. --Cart (talk) 23:57, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
That's perfect! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate how quickly you helped me. What a good way of supporting each other in these difficult times. Stay healthy and safe! – I wish you all the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 02:41, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Förra årets vinnarbild i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

/Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 07:52, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

FP nominations

Hello Cart! I noticed you haven't been active at the FP nominations lately, and I hope it's not due to the increased instances of abrasive conduct by certain users. I think that without your photography and constructive critique the process has been diminished. Hope to see you back. Cheers! --The Cosmonaut (talk) 21:48, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

The Cosmonaut, thanks for thinking of me, that is very kind of you. Yes, with so many users being confined at home, there have been signs of cabin fever. FPC is never easy to cope with and you need to be at the top of you game to handle all the not-so-diplomatic comments, especially if you take the odd kind of photos I do. With all the real life problems the corona pandemic has resulted in, my life is complicated as it is, and I don't need the additional aggravation from FPC now. Maybe I'll be back when/if things get back to normal again. Stay well! --Cart (talk) 22:07, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
1 I miss you (and I feel the same about FPC). --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:51, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

FP categories

Thanks for changing the FP category. I spent a long time looking at the categories and concluded that your category was not appropriate as it is all non-photographic media. My collage is 100̤ percent photographic media. Can you have another look please. Charlesjsharp (talk) 20:37, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Charlesjsharp: It's the best we can do for now since we only have one collage FP at the moment: File:Photomontage (Forggensee Panorama) -2.jpg. It is in the same gallery section as the one I put on your FPC, and it was there long before I got involved in the galleries. Both that one and your collage are actually computer generated since they have been compiled in a computer. If you had made a collage from printed media, for example if you printed all the butterflies and elements, and glued them together into a picture, that would be treated as a work of art. If you took a photo of it, it would end up in Commons:Featured pictures/Non-photographic media/Others#Other. We had a bit of a discussion when we had an FPC that was an example of surreal photography, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:The meeting of day and night in a mountain valley - photomontage.jpg. It was also made up from different photos merged into something new, and it was made pretty clear that the voters didn't want it in the ordinary photo galleries or photo categories. I took my cue from these two examples. If you want collages, computer-made or arts-and-crafts-made, to be treated in some other way, please ask the community what they think. The only "compiled" images in the normal photo categories are the Commons:Featured pictures/Plants#Posters, but they depict the flowers as they are, not flowers made into something. --Cart (talk) 21:06, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks, it's not a big deal, I really just nominated because of my magazine. Come back to FP soon. ̴̴Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:13, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
You can also compare with art/picture made from real butterflies like Category:Art made from insects, it would still be a piece of non-photographic art. It's not likely I'll be back to FPC after all the times you've told me how crappy my photos are and how much they diminish FPs in general. You're always soft as silk when you want me to do you a favor, otherwise you don't mince your words when discussing photos with me. Your abrasive behavior on FPC is one of the main reasons I've lost my taste for it. Good luck with your magazine. --Cart (talk) 21:26, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

I only fix the galleries now and then, like just now on your latest nom. :-) Please remember to go to the actual gallery page (lots of them for birds!) and copy the heading for the nom, otherwise the Bot won't be able to sort the pictures. I'm glad you have settled in well here. --Cart (talk) 19:03, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes my friend you're right, when I'm wrong let me notice so maybe I'll learn from my mistakes. You must excuse me but as you can see I'm not a very neat girl. I have photos scattered across 5 different computers. You must know that once I left forgetting the suitcase and I had to buy everything there. I'm a disaster!  --Sonya7iv (talk) 19:15, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
That's ok Sonya7iv, I also have my photos scattered over computers, hard-drives and clouds at home where it doesn't bother anyone. But here on Commons when you don't keep things tidy, someone else has to sort it out and clean up after you instead. So please try to do things right, otherwise you are creating work for other users. Thanks! --Cart (talk) 19:23, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok,sorry again --Sonya7iv (talk) 19:25, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on May 30, 2020

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I’d like to invite you to our group’s first Virtual Meeting on Saturday, May 30, 2020. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take a look at the meeting page and add your name to the list of participants if you’re planning to attend.

Hope to see you in a week! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:10, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

FP talkpage

Thanks for that. As you could may be see on COM:ANU, this my decision comes not at a random timepoint, because, we are a community project and if some "colleagues" make one sick and even some closer to suicide with extremely uncalled-for comments, one is someday no longer willing to serve. Also, it's by no means motivating, that no one except you even noticed the thread. So if nearly nobody cares, then why should it be considered important? That said, I stay active and probably also on FPC. I highly appreciate your feedback and your work. You are the wisest lady ever on Wiki universe! ;-) --A.Savin 13:51, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

A.Savin, since simply keeping alive and sane during the corona situation, is taking up most of my time, I hadn't noticed the ANU discussion. I only have the energy and motivation to glance at FPC-related stuff from time to time, to keep the galleries in order. As soon as something hits the ANU-page, civility usually goes out the window. It's not healthy to visit such pages too often just to see what is happening.
I can totally understand your point about why bother if no one cares. I think this is a general trend on FPC since so many of the "old" users who had a passion, not just for photography, but also for building the Commons site and making it the best it can be, are retiring/giving up/getting other interests. I would also blame the antiquated programming and categorization systems we have on the site. New users who pop up on FPC can't even imagine that the "behind-the-scene" stuff is not fully automated but has to be done by humans. I would say that people want the system, but no one wants to do the job.
Since I read your post, I have been thinking on and off about how if perhaps the categorization could be embedded in nomination itself and after it's closed, be taken care of by FPCBot. I just need to work out some sort of good frame for it before asking our resident computer wizard Eatcha if it's doable. Can't promise anything, but I'm thinking.
Good to hear that you will still be active. Your photos are such a great contribution to Commons. Their quality is undeniable and for many of them I usually wonder: "How the h*** did he get access to that place or to do that???"
Finally, I sincerely doubt I'm that wise... Lol! I'm prone to human behavior like bad temper and snapping when irritated/tired/exasperated/whatever. The only "wise" thing I'm doing is keeping clear of people when my mood is low. For now, like you, I just enjoy puttering about Commons and doing normal ordinary, not so glorious things. Thanks for dropping by my talk page, (sorry about the long reply though) --Cart (talk) 14:40, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
No need to feel sorry about the comment's length, I appreciate it :) Yeah, just be safe, it's the most important... I know, "Swedish way" ;-) --A.Savin 14:58, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
@A.Savin: My thoughts about the "Swedish way" are not good... Let's just leave it at that, or this page would be censored for use of foul language. I just have to live in it. :-( --Cart (talk) 15:09, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Requesting permission

Hey W.carter, Thank you for uploading wonderful pictures. With your permission, I'd like to post picture(s) you've uploaded on Commons from the social media accounts of Wikimedia Commons. Do you consent to the use of the photo(s) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, Vkontakte etc.? If you agree then how would you like to be attributed (username/real name)? Thank you. ~ Nahid Talk, Thursday 0:26, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

@NahidSultan: Hi there! You don't need my permission to use my photos. :-) Almost all of them are have the public domain license, which means you can use them any way you like. I should have changed the license for the older photos to PD too, but never got around to it, but the same applies to them. Go ahead, use them, go wild! :-) That said, I would of course be curious to see where they are used, just for fun. You can always feel free to drop some links to where you use them. My photos get used a lot outside Commons (and since I also have them on Flickr) and it's always nice to see where they end up. With PD, you don't need to credit me, but if you do, please use "W.carter". I prefer to not give out my real name. All the best, --Cart (talk) 12:18, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
That is wonderful, Cart :) Thanks. I would use them on the social accounts of Wikicommons. Whatever the license is I try to attribute the author. I'd definitely post the links here. Started this page so that we can keep track. I'm adding your username there. Best, ~ Nahid Talk 15:17, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Beat you to it!   --Cart (talk) 15:19, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Goedenavond Cart,

I think it would be good if the name included the door and the name of the building in some way. 20-09-2019. (actm.) Of zoiets. Wat denk je? --Cart (talk) 17:30, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Famberhorst If you are ok with that name, I can do it all for you. No problem. Just give me the OK. :-) --Cart (talk) 17:49, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Agnes & Dominicus --Famberhorst (talk) 18:15, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Goedemorgen Cart, mooi geregeld zo. Dank u wel.--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 05:04, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello

Hi Cart, read your message... I am not much of a computer expert and have been away for a while. I thought I was doing the categories according to what you taught me. Guess not. Please don´t give up on me and walk me through again and eventually i will get it. I think it is easier by email. I tried to look for your lessons but could not find them. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 19:38, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Tomascastelazo, you'll find the lessons at this link: User talk:W.carter/Archive 13#Coaching.... There is also Commons:Categories. Hope you'll get it eventually. I try to avoid email on the Wikiproject, never ends well. Unfortunately I have other things to do now. Perhaps someone else can give you lessons. --Cart (talk) 20:03, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Cart Thanks! will give it another go, as many times as necessary! --Tomascastelazo (talk) 19:39, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Cart I think I got it. Can you see this #REDIRECT[[1]]? I see the logic. Many thanks!!! --Tomascastelazo (talk) 23:32, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Vinnarbilden i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej!

(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

/Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 14:27, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
