Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:34, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Thank you for taking part in the Wiki Loves Monuments participants' survey!Dear The Land, Thank you for taking part in the Wiki Loves Monuments participants' survey. And by the way: the winning pictures of this year's international contest have been announced. Enjoy! Kind regards, |
Photo of Larry Sanger
editHi there, I am wondering why you think the photo of Larry Sanger is a better image than File:Actress Anna Unterberger-2.jpg. Just curious on your thoughts as to why you think it's a good idea to have photos that meta in this page. russavia (talk) 06:08, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Basically because the top two photos on that policy page are now of a (female) actress and a (female) model, which is an odd indication of the kind of photos of identifiable people that Commons has. I have only just appreciated that this is as a result of your switching out a photo of Jimmy Wales in a fundraising campaign for someone else! I'm not particularly tied to the Sanger photo but I do feel we shouldn't use two consecutive images of young, attractive women in the entertainment business to illustrate the policy. File:Battleship building scatter graph 1905 onwards.png
editHi there! I saw your graph, just missing the forgotten Austro-Hungarian navy battleships and the Russian ones among the greatest navies of that time. IMHO will be great if added. Thank you in advance. --Nicola Romani (talk) 10:31, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hi @Nicola Romani: - actually I am being deliberately selective with that graph, as it's intended to illustrate the impact of the Washington Treaty - so only signatory powers plus Germany are included. Further, neither Austria-Hungary nor Russia would contribute any post-1922 data points. Thanks, The Land (talk) 12:43, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff
editDear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:
- I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
- Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
- Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.
Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:48, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board
editDear user group member,
I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.
With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.
That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.
However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:
Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022
We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.
Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.
All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
editDear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
