Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:21, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

- There was no little box to check when I was uploading the image like normal. I looked all over but didn't find it. So I reloaded the picture again. You can delete this image. BTW I have no idea how to fix this problem if I didn't upload it. There are too many instructions trying to explain. Keep it simple, not all of us are brilliant at word problems. Vera A large portion of this photograph is the screen. In it there is a news broadcast the copyright of which is owned by ABC News. (talk) 12:32, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hum I don't think I have another image to upload to show this award. Possibly I can crop out most of the screen shot, like with the Plait piece? Sgerbic (talk) 17:31, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, if you cut out the screen it's ok. But there isn't much of the picture left after that. It would have to be uploaded separate and not as a new version of the same file --Vera (talk) 00:05, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- How much of the screen can I leave in? Up to what letter? Sgerbic (talk) 00:09, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Not just the ABC logo is copyright protected. The entire screen is a recording owned by them. I made an annotation on the photo with a crop suggestion. --Vera (talk) 02:50, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Wow you have some cool tools. I think probably it would be best to just delete the image all together and I'll try to find something else. The crop would be so desperate to make it unusable. Can you arrange the deletion please? What did you think about the Phil Plait crop? Also are you satisfied that I am the photographer of the JREF beard photograph? Sgerbic (talk) 03:03, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- (I'm not a moderator btw, I came across your work here because you had categorised that cover of that game into the category Atheist, which at that that time was used to group pictures of the metalband. Which I was fixing because I had been categorising my picture of Herman Philipse < (I'm really proud of my picture ^_^ ) and that raised some red flags )

- I'm sorry I didn't see the Plait crop?
- Maybe it's an idea to create an Institution template that can be included in the author field for future uploads. Also handy to promote it. I can help you with that if you'd like --Vera (talk) 10:37, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for all your help. You sure know a lot more about WikiCommons and the licensing than I will in a month of Sundays. I'm all for anything template that will make uploading or licensing less complicated. People keep asking me questions and I can't advise them other than the couple things I know. Just simple uploading. I don't know how to fix an error and the instructions to do things are WAY over my head. I'm a professional photographer, but not in this area. I specialize in people under 5 and people who act 5 when it comes to getting their picture taken. BTW that is a very nice image of Philipse, love the lighting and the background. I hope he appreciates it. I would appreciate any help you can and will promote it to my people, but the instructions have to be pretty simple. Thanks in advance.Sgerbic (talk) 17:44, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- BTW, in the instructions at the top of this page there is a paragraph with Made a mistake? that have the basics fixing errors. --Vera (talk) 21:01, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

The main part of this photograph is screen with original artwork on it. The artwork is protected under copyright --Vera (talk) 10:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- I would have not even considered this, guess I'm getting a good lesson. How much of the artwork is considered to much to show? If I crop the image to show part of the screen at what point is it okay? I have other pictures of Plait on the screen talking about receiving the award that I could upload, but they aren't so flattering to Plait as he is talking. I liked this image better. Did you take a picture of this painting? Because you can only claim it as "own work" if you made it yourself. It still has copyright protection if the author hasn't died over 70 years ago. --Vera (talk) 12:38, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you say here that you are a friend of mr. Edward. I assume that you got the photographs from the '70's and '80's from his personal archive. The trouble is that you can only give away part of the copyright if you have actually made the pictures yourself. If it is still known who took the photographs and those people/that person agrees with their publication, please adjust the attribution accordingly. Copyright really is a nastily complicated thing --Vera (talk) 13:38, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

QI
editHi, I've nominated some of your pictures to be promoted to Quality Image. Everyone can nominate QI images, you can even nominate your own pictures --Vera (talk) 11:05, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- WoW! Thanks. I'll have to start thinking about this. Sgerbic (talk) 17:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
IIG template
editHi, I made a template for the IIG
if you place Susan Gerbic<br/> in the author field you will get:
Description | description | ||||||||||||||||||||
Date | |||||||||||||||||||||
Source | Own work | ||||||||||||||||||||
Author |
Susan Gerbic
|
- Vera are you saying to do this every time I upload a images to WC? I tried doing User:Sgerbic}Susan Gerbic this morning for two uploads and the Susan Gerbic came out in red type. I do have a user page for Sgerbic but not for Susan Gerbic. Can I make Susan Gerbic (the name displayed) but actually go to the user page for Sgerbic? I'm totally confused (so what else is new) Do I want to put the only on files I upload as IIG related functions so not to have problems like with the Randi IIG beard photo? Sgerbic (talk) 21:15, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sorry I shouldn't be the cause for more confusion. In the regular uploader, there is the step where they ask you to agree with the Creative Commons license. If you replace your username with your real name there in the 'release rights' step of the process you should be allright, like this. If you've got a large batch of pictures, I would advice to use Commonist. There you can have to fill out the author information in WikiText as you can see here. Indeed it would have been less confusing had the template been on the Randi Beard photo. How often, if at all, you want to use the template is up to you. I think it is a nice way to promote your organisation.--Vera (talk) 18:35, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:IIG Logo.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:IIG Logo.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:IIG Logo.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:IIG Logo.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Hi Susan,
Modern sculptures, whose creator hasn't been dead for ~70 years and which aren't in a public space are protected by copyright. Mind you: this also often applies to awards. File:Honorary In The Trenches Award.jpg is only a simple geometric shape, so I don't consider it eligible for protection. Photographs of sculptures in public are in many countries only protected by the copyright of the photographer, this is called freedom of panorama. --Vera (talk) 15:18, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

File:Karen Stollznow 2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

- Hi -- if you are able to look at this discussion, maybe you could help us arrive at the proper decision -- can you explain anything about the circumstances of how you took the photo, and whether or not Ms. Stollznow agreed to any particular kind of use? Thanks! -Pete F (talk) 20:16, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- I took the photo for use on her newly written WP page. After I uploaded it she wrote to me saying she did like the image and wanted all that I had uploaded taken down. She had a cold that day and did not like the puffiness under her eyes. I tried to have them deleted but obviously can not make that happen. 166.137.191.19 21:21, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
