An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Sadads, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Incomplete DR

edit

Hi Sadads, congrats on becoming an admin. As you're figuring out the admin tools, looks you missed a click when closing Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kaija Lustila.JPG - the DR has been removed from the file but the DR itself is still open. Cheers, Consigned (talk) 18:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oops @Consigned, thanks! Yeah, I am learning how the tools work -- and it was not intuitive to have to do both (I figured that out pretty quickly) -- on enwiki the toolset handles both removing the tags and closing the conversation, Sadads (talk) 12:19, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pasture

edit

Hello, why are you adding depicts statement to every file that contains the word Pasture as that is incorrect as it could be the name of a school, for example File:New Pasture Community Centre, Bridlington - geograph.org.uk - 1709704.jpg or other feature such as a road name. You need to check the image before adding the entry. Keith D (talk) 00:44, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Keith D I am only doing it with the Geograph UK images without depicts statements -- typically I only do it if it has multiple existing depicts statements related to agriculture to confirm that I am not over, but in this batch experimenting with the ones that don't yet have depicts -- the first 2000 I spot checked were all green pastures. I will continue improving my process (and why I am only doing it in batches of several thousand, 12:18, 30 September 2024 (UTC) Sadads (talk) 12:18, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

edit

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
