Hello Ronhjones/Archive 1!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. Finn Rindahl 12:40, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:15, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Transparency
Hi Ron. There is something weird with your SVG images: They are transparent, but not behind den letters (e.g. in File:Butaperazine.svg). I don't know why this is the case. --Leyo 12:33, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Is that a problem then? They seem to display well enough on the WP pages, e.g en:Butaperazine, and I checked that in both IE7 and FF3.
I know why they are not transparent - they were created in a molecule editor (either IsisDraw or SymyxDraw), saved as a MOL file and converted to SVG with Mol2Svg (which I found by a link on en:Chemical file format - where it says "MDL MOL file can be converted to wikipedia recommended SVG graphics format by Mol2Svg converter freeware"). As far as I can see, Mol2Svg draws all the bond lines according to the MOL file co-ordinates - then places the hetero atoms at the intersections along with small blanking rectangles which covers the bond join and makes the atom symbols stand clear of the bonds. If you load up the svg into a svg editor (e.g inkscape), then you can move the items and see what I mean. Ron 18:28, 25 June 2009 (UTC)- Just a short reply for now: There are some wikipedias where the background of images in galleries and thumbs are shown in a light gray (example). There, these white squares would become visible. Unfortunately, I do not use IsisDraw (anymore) or SymyxDraw (never used). Hence, I cannot really help you. However, there might be other users who are experienced in these programs. --Leyo 22:05, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- I do not think it is IsisDraw or SymyxDraw (SymyxDraw is the later version of IsisDraw). I think it's the conversion of a standard MOL file to SVG that presents a problem. Maybe better to completely add a whole white box behind the molecule as shown on your example page with Allyl Alcohol. Ron 22:41, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- IMHO a transparent background is better than a white one. I asked on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemicals for assistance. --Leyo 05:46, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Ronhjones. Please do not categorize structures into this main category. --Leyo 21:47, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Now I am very confused. I have followed the guidelines on en:Manual_of_Style_(chemistry)/Structure_drawing to the letter - basically uploading with this page - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload and then using this pre-defined template (mine is only slighly modified for my software system - this is the original one) to paste into the summary template...
== Comments == High-resolution black/white .PNG made with ChemDraw and IrfanView — see WikiProject Chemistry - structure drawing for detailed instructions. Please drop me a note if you need the source file.
- Note the category is already part of the template text!
- Are you saying that the data on en:Manual_of_Style_(chemistry)/Structure_drawing is in error? - what would you like it to be?
- You just have to proceed reading below the template:
- “Change your structure to the most specific subcategory (or subcategories) of Category:Chemical compounds”
- --Leyo 05:58, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- You just have to proceed reading below the template:
- I see, not the best worded instructions in the world. Ron 18:46, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

- If you really do not find appropriate categories in some cases, you can also use Query chemical. But please try to find categories yourself first. --Leyo 19:00, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

The factual accuracy of the chemical structure Image:Almagate.svg is disputed
Dispute notification | The chemical structure Image:Almagate.svg you uploaded has been tagged as disputed and is now listed in Category:Disputed chemical diagrams. Images in this category are deleted after one month if there is no upload of a corrected version and if there is no objection from the uploader or other users. Please discuss on the image talk page if you feel that the dispute is inappropriate. If you agree with the dispute, you can either upload a corrected version or simply allow the image to be deleted.
In all cases, please do not take the dispute personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! --Leyo 13:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC) |
Licensing of your files
Hi, and first of all thanks for your contributions to Commons. You seem to have uploaded a lot of chemical structure images tagged with both GFDL-self-no-disclaimers and PD-self. However, the first license is effectively redundant: the GFDL grants no permissions that you haven't already granted by releasing the file into the public domain. Also, somewhat incidentally, the GFDL template now brings up an extra box about the license migration and puts the files into Category:License migration candidates, which tends to be rather backlogged enough already.
If you're concerned about the legal validity of the public domain release, you might want to consider the CC0 waiver, which does essentially the same thing but more thoroughly and with greater attention to legal details. Alternatively, if you just with to include the GFDL license tag on your files for some other reason, could you please add the parameter "|migration=redundant
" to it (like I've done here) when you upload new images in the future, so that people won't need to waste time sorting each of them separately?
Thanks, and have a nice day. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 23:41, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message - seems I was using an old version of the recomemded template...
- I used Permission= GFDL-self-no-disclaimers <!-- see Wikipedia:GFDL_standardization --> PD-self
- The new version at en:Wikipedia:Manual of Style (chemistry)/Structure drawing is now Permission= PD-chem
- I will alter my default template to the new version. Ron 23:53, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. If you'd like, I can do a bot run to change the licenses on all your earlier chemical structure uploads. Is that OK with you? —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 14:07, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- Superb idea, thank you. Please edit them Ron 18:59, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi — instead of posting such a template on my talk page, you could have asked for some explanations. My answer would have been this: this file has been downloaded on WP:en by user Meowy being the copyright holder (as indicated in its description). Meowy is also the webmaster of the website VirtualANI. You can check it with him if you like, but the speedy deletion is just wrong. Sardur (talk) 08:15, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
- There is no way I can verify if Meowy is the webmaster of VirtualANI. The website has "Most content is copyright ©VirtualANI. All rights reserved." - thus there is no compatible license shown that will allow it to be uploaded here. There are ways of allowing it to be shown here - see COM:L, but this was not followed in this case. Once a copyright problem has been seen it has to be flagged as soon as possible, otherwise it would leave the site open to legal problems. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:17, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- There was an easy way: contacting me, or even easier and more efficient, contacting Meowy. The license he used on WP:en was compatible (as he is the author), and an OTRS could have been used in order to confirm it.
- Anyway, the file is now deleted, and is not really needed, so I won't "fight" for it. I just didn't like to find such a post as yours on my talk page while I usually do my best to respect policies when I upload a file here. Sardur (talk) 22:08, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- Contacting anyone takes time, editors may not read messages for days, copyright problems are not allowed to stay for any length of time. I did not delete this version, I only tagged it, as I'm not an admin on Commons - so it was deleted bu User:High Contrast. The message on your talk page is a standard template that's used for all such cases. Note that the version on en:Wikipedia is also gone for the same reason (I did delete that version), as there was no OTRS ticket there either. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:29, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
|
File:Madeline_Zima.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid.
Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Redundant svg of Trinitrotoluene.svg
I see you gave an updated File:Trinitrotoluene.svg that uses good vectorization and ACS style. However, we also already have File:Trinitrotoluene acsv.svg, which by its name is ACS-style and by inspection is even less "pure graphics vectorized" than yours (yours strokes the characters, the other uses text items). Maybe that one should be moved to replace yours? DMacks (talk) 11:40, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- Comment I do not like the font of the suffixes in File:Trinitrotoluene acsv.svg. --Leyo 13:11, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- The subscript numbers? They're marked as just "class=smalltext", no font spec for either them or the atom-symbols. Looks like wikimedia's png converter/renderer does some weird things--the numbers are serif in some image-sizes and sans-serif in others?! DMacks (talk) 14:23, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- That's why in images of chemical structures, all text should be converted to paths. --Leyo 14:37, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- Ahah! So it's the other one that might be deletable (lower-quality same-format of this subject)? DMacks (talk) 14:44, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- IMHO in this case, both should be kept. They differ by the position of the double bonds. In order to have a uniform look in case of several structures in an article, one or the other might be preferred. --Leyo 16:06, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

- Urgh! I agree the numbers look wrong. The text is sans-serif font (OK) and the numbers are serif font (not correct). I don't like that one, sorry.
- FWIW - my route to svg is to draw in IsisDraw - using the JACS settings file to control text, text size, bond lengths, etc., print to EPS file (using an Apple Laserwriter driver set to EPS) - looking through the EPS, I cannot see any text so my guess is that this driver is rendering the text as a path. Then I use Scribus to import the EPS, after adjusting the page size to about 10px bigger than the drawing, I export to svg. The resulting svg is a perfect match for how the drawing looked back in IsisDraw. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:50, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- Your SVG files look good. I would prefer if you could increase their nominal size by a factor of two or more. --Leyo 20:04, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I'll have a go - the basic size was obviously determined by the JACS settings file - still I should be able to double all the sizes and keep the proportions the same OR I might be able to do something in the eps to svg conversion step. Ronhjones (Talk) 01:34, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll look into the serif mess as an svg rendering bug in WP and let the rest of this alone. DMacks (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
- I agree - if one clicks on the "bad" picture at File:Trinitrotoluene acsv.svg (which is a png rendition by WP - if one right clicks the image and tries file save it shows a png extension) - to view the actual svg as an actual svg rendered in firefox then - it's OK. As Leyo says maybe it's best to have the text as paths, then no conversion can be required later. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:27, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Shavona.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Shavona.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Shavona.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Shavona.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:07, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Transferring images
May I know how you are moving the images to Commons? Are you using any tools? Two of the images you transferred had Template loops which I fixed. [1], [2]. May be you can take care of it next time. --Sreejith K (talk) 07:20, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- I'm using your Commons Mover tool, if you remember... :-) I did see those loops and could not work out how to fix it, I had a couple of tries (using the show preview), but it only got worse. I thought someone would work it out for me. Now I can see what you removed, I know what to do next time. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:56, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, I remember now. Btw, a better tool to move images to Commons is available at Wikipedia:FTCG. May be you should switch over to that tool. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:25, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Images by en:User:Pubwvj
Hi! You moved two images by en:User:Pubwvj to Commons and added an OTRS ticket to one of them (File:BigUnTusks6184w.jpg) but not to the other one (File:BigUnBedHeadSnow0428w.jpg). Wouldn't the OTRS ticket apply to both of them? According to a notice on my talk page on English Wikipedia, the user is the photographer of both images, although I'm not sure what the OTRS ticket says. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:34, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Category problem
Hi, It was brought to my attention that, at en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 92#Odd behaviour in category, you once described a problem similar to what I described yesterday at Commons:Village pump#Odd display in a category. From Bugzilla:29787, I understand that you could fix it easily enough. However, I'm not sure what I must do exactly to fix the problem here. May I request your advice? Thanks in advance. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:52, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- I remember it well. Edit each page, just add a space or blank line to the page and save - system sees a different page size and does the save (if you click edit and then hit save - it doesn't do anything!). Then the system will recognise the file as an image again. Ronhjones (Talk) 00:57, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Congratulations, Dear Reviewer
Hi Ronhjones, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:
- importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
- importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.
You can also add User reviewer or User trusted to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!--Ginés90 (talk) 03:36, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

- A few weeks ago, I asked you for advice on how best to upload pix for use on wikipedia (re: [Ticket#2012030110016293]). You recommended using wiki commons. You also offered to walk us through the process. We are now ready to proceed. But first a question. The donor (a university book publisher) gave us the photos in tiff. What are the disadvantages? Should we first request another format? Note that Mx96 is leading this project, I am a contributor. Eurodog 20:11, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- From commons Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, xcf, mid, ogg, ogv, svg, djvu, tiff, tif, oga.. We like to have the best quality, tiff is better than jpg. Pages are not rendered direct from the full image just with a size frame - all images have been converted to a web friendly image of the correct size prior to page display. So there's no advantage on picking any format over any other. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:44, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- Today, I uploaded 11 images to wikimedia. I am not new to editing articles, but am new to uploading images. Could you please verify that I gave adequate permission? Because your online hours don't sync with mine (East Coast, USA), is there a way to reach you via email? Thanks for your help! Mx96WCO (talk) 17:30, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- Doubtful - The data is fine but more is needed. You have put Courtesy of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Music Division, and The University of Arkansas Press. Therefore you need to show that the owner (I assume The University of Arkansas Press?) has donated the material.
- As I said in my OTRS message, one ideally needs the urls of the image. Having uploaded them, then that is not a problem. A few simple changes I think you need to make to all the images. - here's the data from File:Frédérique Petrides 7.tif as an example
- Now...

== == OTRS pending
- own means you took the photo and own the copyright, so that's needs changing to the real source
- remove the "self" parameter - that means you are the copyright holder, removing the self just shows the license
- OTRS pending gives you time to sort out the license with the University press.
- So that's all you need to do with the actual images, then you need to get the copyright holder to e-mail in the form at Commons:Email templates/Consent to OTRS - replacing the grey bits with the relevant data Ronhjones (Talk) 18:51, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
- If you are not sure how to format the form, let me know and I will create one for you.
- E-mail - both my talk pages (here and en-Wiki) have an e-mail link on the left, for obvious reasons I don't publish it for the spammers to use! FoP DR categories
Hello,
When you nominate for deletion a picture, with a freedom of panorama rationale, could you add the DR page on the Category:FOP-related deletion requests category (or a by-country subcategory if existing)?
This will allow us to review the cases when those countries will change the legislation to allow freedom of panorama and already help us to read previous DR to see what is applicable in what case.
Thank you for your help. --Dereckson (talk) 18:55, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Regarding Image File:Bambi magazine logo.png
This is regarding the image that you posted an OTRS ticket to, File:Bambi magazine logo.png I have just verifying the images permission as it happened to be in this Category: Category:Items with OTRS permission confirmed but no license it was posted on the Commons OTRS Noticeboard see here so, I was checking to verify the license of the image but it returned as, No Permission! So since you were the one dealing with that ticket. Which listed on the files page is 2012061510014736. So I was wondering if you made a mistake and put the wrong ticket number in or such. Posted by Richard Sinclair 28 Jan 2012. I understand that a photograph of me (taken by Jaak Geebelen), has been deemed the property of Creative Commons. And I can request it's removal. This photograph appears on Wikipedia English and France and probably all the others? as well as the France version has been lifted to create a 'Richard Sinclair' musician page on Facebook. I request that you please remove this picture : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishier:Richardsinclair.jpg. and this offensive, fraudulent page if you are able to : https://www.facebook.com/pages/RichardSinclair/105524906147639?ref=nf
I hope this will facilitate my being able to have my Name back, my User Name, on a Musician page, on Facebook. Richard Sinclair. Email: (removed)

If it was added by yourself please don't do this in future uploads, if you didn't add it yourself it may be a bug in the uploader you used. --Denniss (talk)
- Odd - must be a bug... As far as I know the uploader uses Wikisense, I'll keep an eye out for it if it occurs again. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:14, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Firefox fix
I recently uploaded 2 Flickr images to wikipedia and they were displaying fine on the article. But after you moved them to wikimedia they no longer display in the article in the Firefox browser (in IE it was fine). Any fix to this? Timmyshin (talk) 04:45, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- en:WP:PURGE and en:WP:REFRESH come to mind. ISTR the "thumbnail refresh bug" has reared it's ugly head again - not just limited to image moves. The article en:Bao Zheng renders just fine in my Firefox. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:55, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Administrator?
Hi, Ronh Jones. You has interest in a request for adminship on Commons? I can't see any reason for not and I see that have experience as sysop on English Wikipedia. What do you think? Greetings, Érico Wouters msg 03:30, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- I can honestly say that I've not thought about it - yes I'm an admin on en-wiki and an OTRS volunteer as well, which does take up a bit of time! I could see uses for it - especially with the OTRS work (I've had to request for the odd image to be undeleted when resolving a ticket). If you wish to nominate me then feel free, I can see a use for the permission. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:07, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Evidence of Specification and High Accessibility in Causeway Bay.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation.
Congratulations, Dear Administrator!
Ronhjones, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.
You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.
Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

User:4xchamp
Hi Ron. Since you just deleted two of the files I tagged, I think you should have a look at this user's recent uploads in general. There are lots of derivative works like collections of news articles, posters, leaflets and whatnot. I highly doubt that 4xchamp made them all themselves. De728631 (talk) 22:58, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Picture of Powerboat Unowot from Geoffrey Bagleys page.
Hi, I am new to Wikipedia and the system seems to have me running around in circles.
I am hoping to get this picture reinstated.
I messaged the previous editor who flagged it for deletion but i have heard nothing back.
The picture in question is of an oil painting which I own.
As i am happy for the picture to be used and distributed I am not sure what further I can do to prevent it from being removed.
Thanks.
- Unless you purchased the copyright in writing when you bought the painting, then the artist (and subsequently the artist's beneficiaries) would hold the copyright to the painting. As the owner you are free to display it, but your purchase does not allow you to make copies of it for distribution and use by the general public. You would have to get the copyright owner to release the copyright to a suitable level (e.g. CC-BY-SA) to allow it to be in commons. Ronhjones (Talk) 18:31, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Personally I have been converting these requests to Other version as to my reading of the policy it says file type mismatches should stay. Further as per the instructions on user:CommonsDelinker/commands the bot will not do the replacements, so if they need to be done, it needs to be a manual task. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:22, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Please don't do this, you confuse people with such statements. Every day lots of people write a permission to OTRS, thinking that they are the copyright holder because they are the depicted person. We, as OTRS volunteers and Commons administrators, (should) know better. It's our task to explain to the contributors how it works, not to confuse them with contradicting statements. And I'm actually not happy with the way you just overruled me, without any attempt of communication. Jcb (talk) 21:49, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Helo! It's nice to meet new college of wp.commons (i.e. new for me)! I'm surprised with Your's files on chemistry! They are great! Could You help me and upload N-(1-Naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (also named Bratton-Marshall's reagent, may be either other salt, e.g.di-methochloride or other existing salt)? I'd like to write an article on czech wikipedia about it. Thanks in advance! Next matter: You've deleted file File:II MelnragėBotanTab.jpg. I'm not sure why: a photo was done in public place and its object - scheme is actually determined to inform all visitors. There was no reference to copyrights. Hi Ronhjones. Your files listed above are in Category:Chemical images that should use vector graphics. Could you please check, if the tag may be removed (in the case of high resolution PNGs), if there is already an SVG version, or if you consider uploading an updated version of higher resolution/quality on top of the old? Thank you. Leyo 13:45, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- As far as I remember, these were the best of the non-svg files on en-wiki, and they were therefore moved over - the really poor ones are still on en-wiki! I've had no plans for this set, it would be nicer if someone with some time to spare (not me at present) did make svg versions, but I don't see it as an essential thing. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:57, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

I was wondering why this file was deleted. It had the correct flickr licence here --Flaming Ferrari (talk) 17:06, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
- If was from a Flickr account that is a known copyright violator - so ended up in Category:Flickr images from blacklisted accounts reviewed by FlickreviewR. The photo was taken by the UK army and had quite clearly "Crown Copyright" in the EXIF data. There was also File:Sir Adrian Bradshaw.jpg which was taken by a foreign army and had "Copyright status = Copyrighted" in the EXIF. On the plus side File:Stuart Skeates.jpg was taken by the US army and as such had a nice "Public Domain" in the EXIF, so the license for that one has been changed to Template:Tl Ronhjones (Talk) 17:50, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks for clarifying this. I was under the impression that the account was the official account of ISAF so didn't think there would be any copyright issues, but obviously I was wrong. I'll try to be more careful in future. --Flaming Ferrari (talk) 19:09, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
- The bot uses this list User:FlickreviewR/bad-authors to tag bad Flickr uploaders - if you click the "Photostream" link when viewing an image you get a url like http://www.flickr.com/photos/29456680@N06. It may well be some sort of official account, doesn't mean that they understand copyright. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:07, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Canadian Space Agency Coat of Arms.svg
I noticed that you un-deleted the Canadian Space Agency Coat of Arms.svg, despite it being a derivative of a copyrighted work (which was linked to in the request). I have opened a regular DR as you suggested, but I didn't think SVG versions of copyrighted works, even if slightly different, were considered new works rather than derivative works. I understand that in this case it's a COA, but as far as i know that only explains the rationale behind a new work (based on the blazon) rather than a derivative work. I would appreciate your comments either way. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Canadian Space Agency Coat of Arms.svg. Thank you, The Haz talk 01:25, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- It was undeleted with several other Canadian images (see talks above) - I saw it as a derivative - if you took the original and, say, changed the colours of the stars, then that's a derivative. How far one can move away from the original image until it no longer resembles it, it a moot point. Who ever drew the svg (and I've made a few myself), must have had the original image alongside to work from - thus it's a close copy (I've turned jpgs into svgs by having the jpg load into the drawing program and them adding the vector elements on top of it, finally deleting the jpg when complete - it's not exactly the same, but it's a derivative) (copy to DR if you want) Ronhjones (Talk) 20:21, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed that you deleted this page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Madhukar_Dhas_on_MTV_Set.jpg for copyright reasons. Kindly note that the uploader is the owner of the website that you referenced, BigDooker.com. I've not used the Commons much, so I don't know how to request undeletion. Do help! Susheel c (talk) 07:12, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- All editors in Wikimedia are effectively anonymous. There is no way we can validate who a user really is within these pages. Therefore the best way to upload images is to upload them to Wikimedia first - then it can not be said that the image was copied from elsewhere. If the image was on the web already, then it needs some explicit permission. Either
- The remote image page needs to show the appropriate license - e.g using code from http://creativecommons.org/choose/results-one?license_code=by-sa&jurisdiction=&version=3.0&lang=en. Allowable licenses are usually CC-BY-SA, CC-BY and CC-zero.
- The copyright holder (that will normally be the photographer - unless there is a written release of copyright from him/her) needs to send in the form at Commons:Email templates/Consent
- The remote image page needs to show the appropriate license - e.g using code from http://creativecommons.org/choose/results-one?license_code=by-sa&jurisdiction=&version=3.0&lang=en. Allowable licenses are usually CC-BY-SA, CC-BY and CC-zero.
- Then the image can be undeleted. Ronhjones (Talk) 00:18, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. dear ron: you have removed my picture from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Martin_Blankemeyer.jpg, because you found it at http://www.filmhaus.koeln/ihk-wahl-2014/zur-person/ - i actually did ask the photographer (peter boettcher) for his consent to use the picture on facebook before uploading it and he agreed. probably, we didn't follow the wikipedia standards correctly to make this clear. could you please help me to re-upload the picture again and make clear, that the author of the work has agreed to its use here? thank you in advance & all the best, --Blenco (int:Talkpagelinktext) 13:43, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Commons email problem
I tried to send you an email via Commons, but the message was returned to me saying: "A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error."
I do not understand why my message could not be delivered. Has, perhaps, an administrator blocked my use of Commons mail? My mail on WP is not working either, and I'm staring to feel unwanted around here.

- If you get blocked then there is an option "Prevent user from sending email" - but you are not blocked. Checked my logged address - looks OK to me. But email is disabled on en-wiki, this might have an effect. Forget that - I've just seen the commons e-mail in my inbox (not read e-mails yet) Will reply. - Having my mail blocked on WP is a substantial problem because that is the only method of communication I have left there. But I have used it only a few times over the years, and do not understand why that was disabled.

Wikipedia 'List of cocaine analogues' article images needed
Hello,
I notice you make a lot of molecular structure 2D images. I am currently restricted to a library computer and cannot make images for upload.
I was wondering if you could assist me in my endeavor of adding certain images for inclusion at the Wikipedia 'List of cocaine analogues' page.
What I need is mostly those from Singh's SAR of Cocaine paper (45 pages in on the page finder; pg. 970 or so as enumerated on the paper itself: the chemical structures 183a-(through)-d, 184a & b, 185a-d, 186-188 on 'Scheme 42', on pg. 50 (974) structures 196a-o, 197a-g, 198a-e, 199a & b, 200 & 201a-e ... and more down to page 61 or so; namely N-modified analogs & such.)
Any help making these would be greatly appreciated. Nagelfar (int:Talkpagelinktext) 21:55, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

- OK, I have someone willing to make the images and release the license, this individual can upload the images, but I can't download onto this library computer. I can't upload (or don't know how) to here directly from websites. But the first of the images I requested is here. If you could just download, rename and upload, I can do the article inclusion. I don't know if that's an issue because it wasn't "made by you" but neither of us care about it's intellectual property (for all I care you can say you made it when you upload it). In the meantime maybe one of us will figure it out. Thanks for getting back to me Nagelfar (int:Talkpagelinktext) 21:19, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- jpg is not an acceptable format for chemical structures. They will be expected to be svg. They will sometimes be happy with a high resolution png, but svg is the best format for the structures. There is some useful advice at en:Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Chemistry/Structure_drawing or how to get a good svg drawing. Do check to make sure the structures you need are not already done at Category:Cocaine Ronhjones (Talk) 23:12, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Need some help
Yesterday I sent you an email from WP, and this morning from Commons. Since I have gotten no confirmation for either email, I am assuming that (for reasons unknown) some administrator has blocked my access to the email function on all my accounts. You may remember that I had this problem previously when I tried to contact you.
................................................
I just noticed that a WP robot made some changes to my blocked, User: Malcolm Schosha, account. For instance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Malcolm_Schosha~enwiki
Since I am blocked from editing Wikipedia, but my Commons and Meta accounts are not blocked, unifying my WP accounts does not seem a helpful change.
Also the reason given for my being blocked, "Blocked indefinitely. Reason: Abusing multiple accounts," is incorrect. The reason that wonderful WP administrator, Gwen Gale, gave when she blocked me was WP:PA. (Personally I think it is nonsense to have been indeffed for the arguments that occurred on my user page, but that was her reason and I have given up arguing about that for now.
I would like to get things moved back to the way you left them, if that is possible. Your help would be, once again, much appreciated.
Thank you. Malcolm Schosha (int:Talkpagelinktext) 19:02, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Page is coming along quite a bit since I asked three months ago. Check it out. I still need R-substitution images *within* the tables themselves of the structural images (have all the individual specific-molecule images) that cover broad sub-groups of the analogs, and I need the same done for the GBR & Benztropine analogs; the "functional" analogs. User- Edgar181 is getting busy, so someone else who can make SVG images up to the molecular chemistry standards of Wiki of those final additions will have my page complete. I also need help with the List of Phenyltropanes page, just what Singh compound numbers are the same as the RTI-n already given so I can incorporate the differing binding profiles to the existent tables. I did not see the discussion on Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#Files_provided_by_Dubai_Parks_and_Resorts - nothing is shown on the ticket to suggest any issue. I found the ticket open - I assumed any lock had well timed out by not being answered - the original agent had only asked for the standard confirmation of release, and this was received. Ronhjones (Talk) 01:01, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Ron. It was my mistake that the ticket was unlocked. I think this is an odd case and I might write the organization again.
- To link to tickets, just write ":ticket:2016030110011405" to get ticket:2016030110011405.
- The longer discussion is at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Company_commissions_a_building_-_does_Wiki_presume_they_own_copyright.3F. If you care to be involved, the issue could use another opinion. The organization has released some rights, but they are in Dubai and we meet need to ask them to release more. So far as I know, no major real estate holder has ever provided copyright release to Wikimedia Commons, so this is kind of an odd case and I am wondering what to do. User:Caracal Rooikat
Hi Ronhjones,
This is in regard to User:Caracal Rooikat, whose files have been deleted due to suspected copyright violations. I've suspected some of his files are non-free for some time, and have pleaded with him on both Commons and Wikipedia to stop uploading them. He usually adds a filter, flips them, or makes them part of a collage first but that doesn't make them any less non-free. However, I would very much like to emphasize to you that not all of his files are copyright violations. At least three photographs I can think of and nearly all the MS Paint drawings are indeed his own work. These are valuable and legitimate contributions Rooikat has made to the wiki, and I do not wish to see them deleted even if he is blocked in the future. I strongly suspect this has happened on at least one prior occasion due to the overzealousness of a Commons admin, but the deletion of any of Rooikat's legitimate images without sufficient proof or at least justifiable suspicion that they're copyright violations is unacceptable.
I hope you and anybody else reviewing his contributions here will keep that in mind.
Thanks, --Katangais (int:Talkpagelinktext) 12:43, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Can you check to see if the email has been recieved and if there is anything more I need to do?Thelmadatter (int:Talkpagelinktext) 15:30, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
