Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Yes I know that pictures should have categories (thank you!). I always try to find a suitable one. In this case I provided the category: „Hydrodynamics“, but somehow this category disappeared within the uploading procedure - and I didn't notice it. Misplaced photos

Hi! I noticed that you edited the file descriptions of several of this user's uploads, correctly noting that they were not the uploader's own work as he or she had claimed, but were in fact grabbed from various online sources. If you come across such cases in the future, could I please ask that you let someone know about it, either on the Administrators' noticeboard or by adding a {{Copyvio}} tag to the file description? People uploading random non-free content they found on the Internet to Commons is a huge problem for the project and its users, and the faster we can remove them, the better. Just adding a few subtle links on the file descriptions and a comment in the edit summary normally won't draw the attention of anyone who can do anything about it. Danke schön! Hallo, meinst du es wär sinnvoll, das mit Dams und Reservoirs doch auch für Deutschland irgendwie aufzulösen? Dann könnten Kategorien wie Category:Möhne Reservoir dam, die wirklich nur das Sperrmauer-Bauwerk meinen, vielleicht noch besser einsortiert werden. Es gab vor nicht allzu langer Zeit beide Kategorien (Dams in Germany und Reservoirs in Germany), beide enthielten Talsperren und Stauseen bunt durcheinander. Dann wurden sie in einer einzigen Kategorie gemischt - das war auch konsequent, finde ich. Es gibt auch ausführliche Diskussionen in der deutschen Wikipedia zu einen ähnlichen Thema (de:Diskussion:Talsperre#Stauanlage) - aber ohne Ergebnis. Hier in Commons wäre es wohl auch schwierig, einen Konsens zu finden.--ProfessorX (talk) 20:33, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I had a look at the 9 (1 was added yesterday) files in that category and they were only categorised in there and nowhere else which, of course, is not supposed to be as the category doesn't actually say much about the files at all other than stating a personal view of the uploader/editor. Danke für Deine Arbeit bei der Kategorisierung von Dateien. Allerdings wird diese bei der o. g. umsonst gewesen sein, da es eine Urheberrechtsverletzungen ist. Bei „verdächtigen“ Dateien (geringe Auflösung, keine vernünftige Beschreibung usw.) führt eine Google-Bildersuche schnell zu Scott Caan und Patrick Hoelck und nicht zu Unidentified men. Hallo! Du hast bei File:Dülmen, Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, Treppenhaus -- 2018 -- 1385.jpg eine Kategorie entfernt - Bird's-eye view. Mag sein, dass sie nicht ganz richtig ist, aber wenn du die passende kennst, wäre es nett, sie auch zu setzen. Das würde uns die Arbeit erleichtern. Ich fände es auch konstruktiv. Hallo, kannst du erklären, wofür die Category:Mettmann Neandertal gedacht ist? Es fehlt eine Beschreibung und auch die Bezeichnung entspricht keinem gängigen Schema. I'm sorry, but don't know enough about this topic. Italian laws say that photographs that are "intellectual work with creative characteristics" are protected for 70 years after the author's death, whereas simple photographs are protected for a period of 20 years from creation. "Everybody may express his opinion on a discussion page at his will." This sentence is correct, but there is a premise: what you post is helpful for the discussion. For example, if you want to keep File:Mag. Miriam Vilca Arana. Auditorio.jpg, you need to read the reason for deletion, and then provide valid evidence that the reason is invalid, such as the uploader is with the lady in this photo are related. Self-photo are not a valid reason to ignore copyright issues. If Jimbo himself took a picture of himself, then the copyright holder of the photo is himself, not someone else who uploaded it to the public website without his permission. Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest organized on Wikimedia Commons, this campaign invites participants to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from different regions, including, folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology and many more. Let's help to protect and develop our intangible Indian culture, which consists of customs or active expressions that we have acquired from our ancestors and passed down to our offspring.

How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme, create a Wikimedia account and start uploading!
