Check of Flickr license
editI found an image on one of your lists. You had data on license from before image was uploaded on commons. So I wonder if it would be possible to make a list of licenses on Flickr back in time? We have Category:Possibly unfree Flickr images reviewed by FlickreviewR with 90 images. Could you make a list of these and check file history on Flickr? If not I do not understand why you have "old" data on File:North Thompson River.jpg. --MGA73 (talk) 16:24, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- Wouldn't it be great if I could, it'd solve all our annoying Flickr license problems. But no, I can't. The explanation for that one lies in searching the page for the Flickr id. Sorry! --Para (talk) 19:04, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah was afraid so. But what does it mean "ies in searching the page for the Flickr id"? Is the list wrong (showing license as if it applied back in time)? Or did you just happen to have the id in som old dumps? --MGA73 (talk) 19:15, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- Use the Flickr id Luke, the file is a dupe! --Para (talk) 22:05, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Two images
editDear Para,
I noticed you made an edit in September 2006 for these 2 images:
You added the flickr source here for both photos. MGA73 thinks the edit could equal a review by you but thought I should contact you to confirm this. Can you give me a reply on whether you checked for image licenses in the past when you added flickr sources for images? As for the copyright owner (S. Roe), I contacted him but he refused to reply to my question. He just ignored me. When I checked his flickr account on Internet archive, I found he licensed some of his images as "cc by nc sa" and some as "cc by sa" in 2005 & 2006. So, it was a mix of these 2 licenses. Today they are all ARR. Can you confirm the license was 'cc by sa' in 2006 when you added the flickr source? I think Asta may have read the license right but I can't pass an image on a feeling.
- PS: Pls try to reply on my talkpage if you can. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- That's unfortunate but OK. There were likely hundreds of images with no sources back in 2006 in the pre flickrreview days. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:23, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Commons-images on OpenLayers
editHello, do you know http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/strategy-bbox.html ? It's a shame that it is not possible to see free commons images on free maps (OpenStreetMap). I try it but don't get it to work on toolserver. --Kolossos (talk) 16:06, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
- That looks promising. I can't get it to read the existing KML either, it probably expects some specifically structured format. So I wrote a quick script to mimick the example WFS format instead, and it kinda works! See http://toolserver.org/~para/GeoCommons/OpenLayers.html. Will have to figure out just what it supports and what can easily be done with it. --Para (talk) 22:17, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
I also experiment in the moment with Openlayers for my project streetlist to show streets from a postGIS query as KML on Openlayers. --Kolossos (talk) 20:10, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Dear Para,
Since you verified the license for this heavily used image, I have typed a flickrreview in your name for this picture. Unfortunately, the flickr account is deleted today and the uploader here has left Commons. I hope it is acceptable. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:24, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
- As his edit doesn't state it was verified, I reverted it. -- User:Docu at 10:38, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like I missed this one. It's similar to Leo's other case further above: my response was that when adding sources, I didn't review licenses, even though I may sometimes have tidied the description page and moved things around. I have probably never done Flickr license review, other than the automated runs. So I think Docu is right, it's more of a case of OTRS forward needed from the person who added the permission note. --Para (talk) 21:12, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Type in a flickrreview
editDear Admin Para,
Can you please type in a flickr review for this image yourself:
I had typed it on your behalf but someone reverted it because it was not you who typed in the pass but me. I gave my reasons in the image discussion page where you said the license was 'cc by 2.0'--ie. you physically inspected the license. Today, the flickr account has been deleted. This is a heavily used image too. Please help. If not, it must be deleted. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:33, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- But I didn't! Like the edit summary says, the edit was for "Flickr source". Yes I probably should have done more, like react to the unofficial permission note etc, but I don't work that way; my edits here usually address a single issue only, especially when done for a group of images. I think that's true for most edits on Wikimedia projects. Boy is this going to be a problem when Flagged Revisions gets activated and revisions are autoreviewed when "experienced" users edit something in them ... --Para (talk) 11:40, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- This is an impossible situation now. The original flickr account is gone and the uploader is gone...and you are the only person who saw the photo on flickr. I hope it does not get deleted because it is a highly used image. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:17, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Toolserver
editHi Para, not sure if you read this page more frequently than the mailing list, but please don't forget to extend your account. It wasn't listed here. I'd hate to see the tools turn off. -- User:Docu at 06:22, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Me too. Well spotted, this makes my solitary projects feel more like collaboration. :) --Para (talk) 21:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- We are so well coordinated, seems like it rolling all by itself! -- Ok, maybe none is using it and we might as well stop .. BTW, recent changes seems stuck even as there isn't much lag. -- User:Docu at 17:29, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- The file with the timestamp of the last seen edit had somehow become empty, which made the tool generate giant queries only to be killed. No idea of the cause, but the effect is fixed for now. --Para (talk) 11:38, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. BTW is this rename a problem for the tool or doesn't is matter? If yes, it might as well keep its current name. -- User:Docu at 04:29, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- As I can't exclude any problems myself, I withdrew it. -- User:Docu at 03:25, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
Could you check once how it is possible to expand geotagging in a way that there are not pushed entries in the list and tags in the map away because there are too many pics tagged very close to almost the same location?
Best wishes --Lord Koxinga (talk) 21:26, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

editPlease have a look at Commons:Village_pump#~para/GeoCommons/. -- User:Docu at 03:25, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Hi Para,
I saw your nice tool, it's very useful, but it would be perfect, :) if one could filter the results by the uploader like: http://toolserver.org/~para/caams.php?uploader=Euku (= my uploads only). Therefore one could use this link for the user page. Is it possible/difficult to show (in addition) a ranking by image uses/uploader? --Euku:⇄ 12:50, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- Your link works now. :) Ranking would be possible to add as well, but I don't think it'd be that useful. The use counter (I assume) has already encouraged the listing of some very minor uses, and I'd rather see interesting ones only. That's subjective of course, but there's always Tineye to find all the blogs etc. --Para (talk) 22:03, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thx! --Euku:⇄ 08:57, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
Batch
editHi Para, would you have a look at the recent changes tool. A batch might have overwhelmed it. -- User:Docu at 04:37, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- That was it alright. The updater has been dying all week due to some 32MB memory limit on the toolserver, and I've been kicking it back up every now and then. If these bulk uploads don't happen too often, maybe I won't need to have a look on changing its memory usage. --Para (talk) 22:37, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
KML-Export
editHi Para. I try to figure out all locations (coordinates) that are used by articles on a specific location map (like en:Template:Location_map_Panama) ...so all of these or these. Since you've worked on the KML-Export tool, I hope you can give me an advice (or the source code of klmexport) about how to get the coordinates of all these articles. Regards, Alex
- At the moment I don't see much need for a "what links here" type of mapping to add it to the tool. Looking at the docs for the MediaWiki API, there doesn't seem to be support for filtering extlinks either. With a few database tables on the toolserver or with en:Wikipedia:Database download you can run a query like this:
select page_title, substring_index(el_to, '?', -1)
from templatelinks
join externallinks on (tl_from=el_from)
join page on (el_from=page_id and page_namespace=0)
where tl_namespace=10
and tl_title="Location_map_Panama"
and el_to like "http://stable.toolserver.org/geohack/geohack.php?%"
- If this is for a one-off thing, let me know and I can parse that for you to KML or something. Or if you'd like to do it yourself and the structures to call the template aren't too complicated, the page text dumps can be parsed for any uses. DBpedia might work too. --Para (talk) 22:58, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. So basically you are looking for external links to GeoHack to build these KML files? I'm trying to find a way to gather usage statistics for sepecific location maps through various Wikipedia projects. Downloading and importing X dump files over and over again ...doesn't sound like much fun :) But I found out how to query all external links for pages embedding that template [1]. I think this could do the job. Thanks again. --Alexrk2 (talk) 23:50, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yep, database queries are much faster than parsing the page text or asking the API in small batches. At the moment coordinates can be found from the external links table only, but if you like, en:User:Dispenser has been parsing them to sql format at tools:~dispenser/view/Geodata. You would still need the page and templatelinks tables though, so getting toolserver access might be the best way to go forward. Personally I'd like categorisation used for these types of things, but it does tend to drift. Otherwise you've got a good project idea there, I'd love to see some animated heat maps of Wikipedia articles and pageview data! I also remember seeing an announcement that Wikimedia Germany would commit to storing historical pageview data and making it available, but I can't find mention of it anywhere now. Anyway, that'd provide some continuity for such a project. --Para (talk) 13:02, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- A lazy solution could be to add a (hidden) category to the template and then use the category to display them. -- User:Docu at 13:18, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

kmlexport doesn't work
editWhy doesn't kmlexport doesn't work in the moment? We had a discussion in the german wikipedia about this so I think it is the easiest way to ask you. --Kolossos (talk) 18:51, 25 February 2010 (UTC) Upps, I belive you have nothing to do with this directly. A "select count(*) from coord_dewiki;" in the database from dispenser delivers only 8204 entries. I will ask him. --Kolossos (talk) 20:55, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
- No this is (was!) me alright. The kmlexport tool currently reads coordinates from geohack links, and even though there has for a long time been talk of stable going away, I left supporting the new url until the last minute. Finally it broke, but of course the fix wasn't very difficult, and the tool works again. Thanks for the note. --Para (talk) 21:23, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
And again... try [2] or [3] for instance. The first link results in "No geocoded items found", the second shows only two out of almost 500 articles. --тнояsтеn ⇔ 09:49, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, my "not very difficult" was because I had only fixed it half way. It's fixed completely now and both those links find a few more articles. There will be problems when you go up to 500 though, see en:Template talk:GeoGroupTemplate#Long-list-warning option needed. I haven't implemented any of that yet as I don't know what the best solution would be. --Para (talk) 19:48, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Geocoding RC

- A database server was swapped, and my tools connect to them by name rather than by role. I used to have them connect by role, but user databases didn't move along with some server shuffle once, so here we are. Fixed now anyway, thanks! --Para (talk) 19:44, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
- Good. Thanks for taking care of this so quickly. -- User:Docu at 06:33, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
23076
editHi Para, good know that you are still around. Would you have a look at Commons:Village_pump#Commonist and Google Maps issues. This may be due to Bugzilla:23076. -- User:Docu at 11:54, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's less dramatic than that: same issue as above (I moved this section here). Since the server changes back and forth have been twice as much pain as the forgotten user database the last time, I've changed it to connect by wiki name again. Until the next time! :) --Para (talk) 18:40, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Too many changes at the same time. I should stop making guesses ;). You probably noticed we got a new skin. Makes the site look completely different with tons of new features ;) -- User:Docu at 18:45, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Geocoding
editHello,
Excuse me for my bad english, it's not my native language. I think your are the developper of that tool. I often use it for illustrate geographical article. I've a request for your tool. It is possible to choose the color of each point ? I've an example : fr:Columbia (fleuve)/Géolocalisation. I would like to have a color for each category of point. Is it possible ?
Thanks for you answer. Ludo (talk) 14:00, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- Pas de prob. Someone put this idea forth at en:Template talk:GeoGroupTemplate#Colors but the discussion died. If you have a suggestion on how people would enter the color in wikitext, I'll see what I can do. --Para (talk) 19:18, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Geocoding tool went wrong
editHi. I am very frequent user of geocoding to-do tool (I use it almost every day to geocode all new uploads). I still have some pictures uploaded about 3 years ago and there were not yet geocoded. I like to do this work. The gallery should show about 700 pictures uploaded by me without coordinates; last week it showed 200 and now it shows 2500 (?!) There must be some really weird error doing this. Can you help me to figure out what is going on? Aktron (talk) 17:54, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'd go the easy way and blame toolserver admins. They've been rewiring servers lately, so the Commons database may not have been up to date every time you tried to use the tool. Those numbers do seem a bit too variable though, but I don't know what else it could have been. Currently it's showing 759 for you, is that about right? --Para (talk) 19:21, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- Seems that now is everything fixed and going OK. I wouldn't be bothering you if there weren't such jumps like I saw. Thanks :-) --Aktron (talk) 22:41, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
No, it's still not OK.
- I added the location template to File:Greenwich mean time line.jpg, it took over a week to show up on Google Maps, but not on the exact location. I changed the coordinates 2 days ago, but that has had no effect at all.
- When you click on this link (copied from the image description page) and zoom out 3 steps, you'll see "Greenwich mean time line" and "File:Candosnos" (with the word "File:"), but clicking on "File:Candosnos" does not show the image (only some text). This is true for all items with this "File:" prefix.
- Sometimes files show up twice in the left column on google Maps, pointing to the same file. this happens mostly after zooming out or shifting the map a little.
- Toolserver has some problems recently and currently lags, check out {{Toolserver}}. -- User:Docu at 14:12, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- You were right, it's working fine now. :-) Except for some images appearing twice in the list (left panel on Google Maps). - Erik Baas (talk) 11:31, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- I can't find any duplicates in the db, but maybe some files could be there twice, with the filenames encoded differently somehow? For now I'd blame Google Maps not clearing the previous results when refreshing the view, I've seen that happen a couple of times. --Para (talk) 18:48, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- The problem can be reproduced by doing this: open File:Hoorn, Nieuwendam 15.jpg, click on "Google Maps", zoom in to the maximum (clicking " "), click on "Hoorn, Nieuwendam 15" in the left panel. You'll see the map scroll a bit, wait until the list of files is refreshed, and then a second instance of the same filename appears on top of the list. Always just one, and always the one you just clicked. P.S.: Using Firefox or Opera makes no difference. - Erik Baas (talk) 21:05, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

I found a problem in this script. A thumbnail is shown for File:Rudolf von Alt "Aussicht von der Rosalienkapelle" 1837.jpeg, but clicking on it gives an error; the link is [4], so I guess it's something about the quote mark ? - Erik Baas (talk) 11:34, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- The image is first at http://toolserver.org/~para/Commons:Special:NewFiles?offset=20100428112130 and seems to be linked ok in my browser. Which browser are you using? --Para (talk) 18:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- I had the same problem. The page doesn't seem to get opened as Unicode, but as Western with some mojibake. Works fine when switching manually to Unicode. -- User:Docu at 20:05, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- Para, I'm using Firefox (3.6.3), default encoding Western (ISO-8859-15), default language "nl", and the problem was not there when I just clicked that link. - Erik Baas (talk) 20:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
- This just happened: I clicked on an image, the link was [5], and got a blank page saying "No file by this name exists, but you can upload it." So I tried again, maybe 5 seconds later, and this time it worked: [6]. Weird... - Erik Baas (talk) 22:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
kmlexport
editHi Para, youwrote the script kmlexport. This is very helpful e.g. in the german Wikipedia. I have added in the de:Liste der Donaubrücken (is meaning a list of all bridges above the danube. So I have a question subject your script:Is it possible to use kmlexport in each section of list separate. Now all the bridges are shown in one map. If I add the coordinates from germany to romania, so the map will be very small and many points are appearing. If it would be possible to shown only one section, so I can shown only Austria or only hungaria and you will have a better overview. I hope you can understand my wish with my bad english. -- Many thanks in advance and regards from Vienna.K@rl (talk) 21:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- The tool has a section parameter, which allows just that. See for example with Linz from the article. But these really separate sections is probably not what you're looking for, and instead a higher level section should probably contain all its subsections as well. I'll see what I can do... --Para (talk) 11:24, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Geocommons on Openlayers&Openstreetmap
editHello Para, i'm on a good way to run my wikipedia-world coordinates on openLayers with Openstreetmap in the backround [7]. This open ways for integration into wikimedia (first in osm-Gadget or in Geohack). OpenLayers request a "bbox" instead a "BBOX"-parameter. Could you please also support additional "bbox" with your GeoCommons-simple.kml:
$BOX = addslashes(urldecode( $_GET["BBOX"] ));
if ($BOX==""){$BOX = addslashes(urldecode( $_GET["bbox"] ));}
Thanks Kolossos (talk) 17:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- The kml interface supports both cases. I'm not sure how the initial kml file is related, as anything using it should just follow the given url regardless of case. But since it doesn't make any difference and uppercase looks odd anyway, I've changed it. Hope it helps! --Para (talk) 11:27, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
- Upps, I give you the false script. I need bbox support for GeoCommons/kml.php . Sorry for that. Could you modified this script please? Thanks. --Kolossos (talk) 17:40, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
- Works now, I had forgot to deploy the newer version. --Para (talk) 14:59, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Additionally I support since a long time also a thumbnail map for wikipedia (source code):
http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/openlayers/kml-on-ol.php?lang=de&thumbs=yes
It would be perhaps also nice to have this especially on commons. --Kolossos (talk)
- Now I have Commons on OpenLayers and OpenStreetMap: http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/openlayers/commons-on-osm.php?zoom=12&lat=52.21434&lon=10.97672&layers=B00TT How can I get your rotated rondels? In the moment I get such icons with heading parameter how it is right for Google Earth. How do you detect the application? Is there the source code somewhere available? --Kolossos (talk) 19:47, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- If the User-Agent is Kml-Google, it serves the simple kml with pre-rotated icons. I added Mozilla to the list now too, which basically means that anything but Google Earth gets that version of the kml. Would be nice if the OSM Javascript could have a meaningful User-Agent, but I guess that's not possible.
- Next up is probably styling the popups - they look awful! Is that something that can just be fixed with a stylesheet change at the commons-on-osm script? --Para (talk) 20:58, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- I work this evening to styling the popups and the mouse-over windows. Now I need only find a small solution for the ugly borders around the links. Than I think it's ready to include it into location-template or what do you think? --Kolossos (talk) 21:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Duplicates on GeoCommons
editSorry to disturb you, but a small thing in my uploaded pictures is nagging me, and I couldn't find and answer on how to resolve it. This GeoCommons location shows two images, when there is in reality only one. File:Kurki lammenrahkalla.jpg was renamed to File:Kurki Lakjärvenrahkalla.jpg 12 days ago and the rd fas removed 3 days ago. Is the old image name going to stay in the database forever or is it just waiting for a refresh? Or is the problem somewhere else? Thank you --Albval (talk) 10:00, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Commons-on-Openstreetmap Thumbnails
editIf you look at Wikipedia-on-Openstreetmap you can see that I can show thumbnails from Wikipedia article, I think that's nice but would be more useful on Commons-map. But it's difficult to make this on clients-side with Javascript, so I would ask you, if you would be able to deliver on serverside a KML with such thumbnails if the request contains an parameter "&thumbs=yes"? It's a little bit complicate because as far I know you need for each image a own style with the image as icon. Perhaps it helps to use parts of my source-code (looking for $thumbs=="yes"). --Kolossos (talk) 10:21, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Other idea: Could you add a parameter like "&user=kolossos" so that I could see only my images. I think this would be a cool feature for motivation, I hope it's fulfil our Privacy_Policy. Very similary would be "¬user=kolossos" to give me all images that are not from me. --Kolossos (talk) 18:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
kmlexport problem
editHi Para,
I like your kmlexport a lot and I have used it for many maps on the Czech Wikipedia (e.g. here). Now I would like to make a map of all mountains listed in an article section (like this) or in a template, but it doesn't work for me:
1. map of mountains in cs:Lužické hory#Vrcholy, but neither this (no items) nor this (items also from other sections) is working as it should.
2. map of mountains in cs:Šablona:Beskydské tisícovky, but neither this nor this is working.
What am I doing wrong? Why it doesn't work? Could you please help me? --Maoman (talk) 20:25, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Para, I also like your tool and I have placed a template using it in many pages of the German Wikipedia. We noticed missing entries on some pages, one of them is de:Portal:Düsseldorf/Bilderwunsch, where we have about 90 listed articles and only about 30 of them are shown on the map (both google and bing), exactly those, which have 'Düsseldorf' somewhere in their lemma. I'd like to know whether this is a feature or a bug. :-) Thank you --Wiegels (talk) 17:43, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's relying on the title attribute for links from articles, and for some reason many of the links on that page don't have it. Maybe that's a MediaWiki bug or feature? Anyway, I wrote a workaround for the tool, and the list on the map matches the article better now. --Para (talk) 19:56, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining the cause and making your script deal with those incomplete links. It works fine now. --Wiegels (talk) 03:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's a feature of MediaWiki 1.17: bugzilla:542. --Wiegels (talk) 13:13, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Para, the bug/feature has been reverted. Now all links have title attributes again. --Wiegels (talk) 07:42, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Admin inactivity
editHi Para. I am sad to tell you that your adminship has been removed in acordeance with our inactivity policy. If you'd like to be a sysop again, I'd kindly ask you to request so at COM:RfA. Sorry to tell you this bad news, abf «Cabale!» 15:35, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi Para, as you are no longer admin, would you mind to remove the admin-box from your userpage? Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 20:58, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, done! --Para 09:30, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
GeoCommons and Globe location
editSémhur (talk) 18:51, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- It shows everything that isn't in Category:Media with locations or Category:Location not applicable, though subcats will probably not work and I don't know how to solve that. --Para (talk) 18:30, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
kmlexport for OpenStreetMap
editMoikka!
I am currently writing a program which uses your kmlexport and shows icons of Wikipedia articles on an OpenStreetMap. Meanwhile I think my program is good enough to be invoked by kmlexport. Please have a look at my project page. Sorry, it's in German, but if you click on the green or red links in the table, you will see how it looks and (from the red links) how your program should invoke my program. Any comments are welcome, but please on the discussion page of the project page.
BTW: your toolserver account has expired. I hope it will not be deleted! --Plenz (talk) 11:55, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've added a way to do that: redir to custom urls. At the moment it doesn't seem to be working with your site, but that's probably a gzip/kmz issue. In any case, having custom urls will allow people to use localisation etc on the target site, so I'll probably work more on that rather than additional redir codes. Thanks for spotting the account expiration - I was redirecting a page on my account to Interiot's, whose account has expired. --Para (talk) 18:30, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Icons for images with coordinates long removed still show up
editHi. If you go directly to http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/openlayers/commons-on-osm.php without coordinates, it shows the 0,0 location, with icons. The top icon is for File:WLANL - arts of akki - Zonnebloemen, Vincent van Gogh, 1889.jpg, which had its "0,0" location data removed in June 2010. --AVRS (talk) 13:30, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
kmlexport doesn't work for Geohack links starting with "//toolserver..."
editHello Para, recently in DE the ccordinate (geohack) link was modified to start with "//toolserver" instead of "http://toolserver" - but the kmlexport tool doesn't seem to handle those extlinks properly. The resulting KML files say it couldn't find any georeferences. Could you please modify the tool so it is able to work with both link forms (with protocol prefix and without)? --Alexrk2 (talk) 19:48, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

kmlexport passes wrong link
editHello! I've just tried the OSM/GM/BM link at de:Damm, which uses http://toolserver.org/~para/cgi-bin/kmlexport?project=de&linksfrom=1&article=Damm. I found the coordinates of de:Damm (Schermbeck) (the last in the list) linked with http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damm, but that article has no coordinate link itself. As "Damm" never had any coordinate data, I can't think of cache problems. Is that a bug, related to "linksfrom=1 - Return the coordinates on the pages linked from the given page in addition to its own coordinates"? -- ✓ Bergi 01:11, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Deleted file still shown on commons-on-osm
editHi, para
I asked already (in german) here and there an now I've been pointed to you. On that link, which is included on all pictures with coordinates here on commons, you can see a marker for a picture southeast to the cross in the centere. The pictuere to which this marker referes has been deleted in September 2011, but the marker is still there. Is this a general bug or just a problem with this special picture? --Jumbo1435 (talk) 11:33, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

- The toolserver's normal job scheduler had stopped running the updater for some reason, probably related to https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/TS-1428 around the same time. I've changed it to use another scheduler, and it's running regularly again. --Para (talk) 20:20, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

GeoCommons DB unavailable
editHi Para,
the "Commons on OSM" tool reports that the GeoCommons database is unavailable [9]. Is this due to the server outage of yesterday?
Also, I do not quite understand how to get the correct lag values for the database used in Geocommons. It is one of the toolserver lag values, but which?
Thanks in advance, --Gormo (talk) 13:50, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
- Now the DB seems up again, but I don't see any of the pictures geocoded after July 26th. Can't figure out why. If the GeoCommons DB followed s1 replication lag, i should not be able to see the media geolocated on July 26th. If it folowed s2 replication lag, I should see the updates. Or am I completely not understanding replication lags? --Gormo (talk) 14:35, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
kmlexport issues on pl.wiki
editHello. We've recently started using kmlexport on pl.wiki, and ran into weird issues with markers being displayed at 0°N 0°W. Can you help diagnose it, or share the source code so we can try ourselves? (Contact data and tehc guy credentials ;) available on my user page.)
Examples:
- https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://toolserver.org/~para/cgi-bin/kmlexport?article=Category:Gmina_Gdów&project=pl&l=0&linksfrom=1&usecache=1 ("Dobrzyców" is displayed at both the correct location and 0,0)
- https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://toolserver.org/~para/cgi-bin/kmlexport?article=Kategoria:Powiat_nowos%C4%85decki&project=pl&l=2&usecache=1 ("Cerkiew św. Dymitra w Szczawniku" is displayed at both the correct location and 0,0)
This is not a Google Maps bug (the data is corrupt in the generated KML file), nor, I believe, incorrect geolocation data on pl.wiki. Thanks for the help, I'd be happy to help debugging :) Matma Rex (talk) 15:40, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- There's a couple of issues:
- The toolserver database has GeoHack link formats that aren't in the wiki html anymore. The toolserver replication lag for the s2 cluster that plwiki is in is almost a week at the moment, and there have probably been changes in the templates that take the coordinate data since then. For pl:Dobrzyców, the toolserver database currently has 49.89099_0_0_N_20.19500_0_0_E_scale:10000 and 49_53_27.56_N_20_11_24_E_type:city, and for pl:Cerkiew św. Dymitra w Szczawniku, 49.38247222_0_0_N_20.86827222_0_0_E_scale:10000 and 49_22_56.9_N_20_52_5.78_E_type:city.
- Kmlexport wasn't handling the odd decimal_0_0_NSEW_decimal_0_0_NSEW GeoHack link format. It is now, so once Google's cache of the kml expires, your links above won't show 0,0 coordinates anymore.
- Kmlexport doesn't see that coordinates with rounding and precision differences are the same coordinates. Since the pages only use a single format now, that shouldn't be a problem once the database catches up. --Para (talk) 19:55, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks :) I'll report back if there are any more issues. kmlexport is a lovely tool! Matma Rex (talk) 14:22, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Map zooming
editDo you know if there exists a Toolserver tool that could perform basic arithmetic operations ( - * /) for numeric parameters embedded in an URL?
This may sound a strange request, but it would be useful for setting the zoom parameters in GeoTemplate for various online maps. For example, Norway's Norgeskart takes an URL that contains four numeric parameters (minx, maxx, miny, maxy), that is, the corner coordinates of the desired area. I don't see any way to tweak these out of the replacement variables that GeoHack provides, such as {scale}, unless there is a way to perform some math such as "minx = centerx - scale*0.25" when constructing the URL for Norgeskart.
If no such tool exists, would it be difficult to create? I might try it myself but I don't have a Toolserver account. --Jmk (talk) 11:16, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- Someone spotted the need for bounding box coordinates at en:Template talk:GeoTemplate#Old Maps Online as well. The scale parameter isn't very well defined though, and it would be good to be able to use the dim parameter for getting the coordinates. That would probably have to use more complicated operations than those, with several variables and trigonometric functions. Also, for a url based calculator, it'll be difficult to pinpont all the operations it'd have to handle while keeping it secure to run on the server side, so it would be quite a bit of work at first... I think easier ways would be:
- Add {bboxlatmin} etc variables to GeoHack, with the code that generates them from the dim or scale parameters.
- Do the same in GeoHack.js instead to calculate them on the client side, after the normal GeoHack has done its thing
- Add client side code to Mediawiki:Geohack.js to run eval() on some of the links on the GeoHack page, and put whatever formulas are needed into the links in GeoTemplate.
- The GeoHack page calls the Javascript page of the wiki it was opened from, so that option would have to be done in all the wikis that use this sort of linking. --Para (talk) 20:45, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- Trigonometric functions might be needed for degrees lat/lon, but many map services actually take rectangular coordinates, in which case the bounding box arithmetic is relatively simple: just add/subtract half of the desired viewport size (in metres, typically). For example Norgeskart takes UTM33 (GeoHack gives them as {utm33easting} and {utm33northing}). Of course, deciding the viewport size in metres might require something else (e.g. {scale} multiplied by a guess of the physical window size in metres). But even an constant-size bounding box, say, ±5000 metres from the center, would be more useful than a zero-size bounding box (for which Norgeskart gives the maximum zoom level, something ridiculous like 1:400, and apparently those old maps do the same). Just adding and subtracting 5000 would be a quick solution! — But you are right that for a general solution, complicated arithmetic operations might be needed. Some map services take proprietary zoom levels, so matching them to the desired scale might require e.g. table lookup, rounding to integers, clipping to a range e.g. 1 to 4, etc. --Jmk (talk) 08:45, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- Ok so I put together a simple server side script to get something going. It does operations between curly brackets, like so: http://toolserver.org/~para/urlcalc?http://norgeskart.no/adaptive2/default.aspx?gui=1&lang=1&minX={257017-10000*0.05}&minY={6785096-10000*0.05}&maxX={257017 10000*0.05}&maxY={6785096 10000*0.05} --Para (talk) 23:09, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

kmlexport - section combined with linksfrom=1
editHi, thanks for great kmlexport tool. I wonder, parameter linksfrom=1 should not be combined with section parameter? Here [10] I have example, where despite giving section parameter I get locations of items from all sections. --Musp (talk) 21:55, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
UTF-8 for GeoCommons scripts
edithttp://toolserver.org/~para/GeoCommons/recentchanges.php is sending responses without "charset=utf-8" in the Content-Type header; it's causing browsers to default to the ISO-8859-1 character set (as required by HTTP/1.1 standard) and show goofy characters in non-ASCII filenames. In theory, the header to be sent should be
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
This may affect other GeoCommons scripts also; I haven't tried them yet. --Closeapple (talk) 22:23, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
- Alright, my Firefox seems to be fairly good at sniffing the charset, as I've never noticed that before. It's in now. --Para (talk) 18:31, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Geocoding to-do
editHi Para. I am a regular user of this tool for more than 5 years. It was always good and it always helped me to find pictures where coordinates should be included. As of now I used it for describing more than 11k of my pictures (and there is still 2k remaining). Recently the tool does not work; the gallery of pictures without coords simply does not want to load. Is there some technical problem, or do I use the tool to often... or simply the tool is dead? An answer would make me my activities on Commons a lot easier. Thanks. --Aktron (talk) 05:34, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- Glad you're still finding it useful. I haven't touched the tool's code in ages, so it's surprising that the query for a user's pictures has starting taking a long time to run. Something must've changed in the toolserver databases, but I wouldn't know where to begin to find out what that is. So, I've changed how the tool gets the list and it seems to be giving results again. I remember there was something someone didn't like about using upload logs for this, instead of the "File history" section... so let me know if you find anything odd in the view of your uploads. --Para (talk) 15:34, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the fixes. Unfortunately, I don't see any results for my name. I have a bit strange question however; I use the tool quite often, so the tool itself perhaps perceive me as an attack (too many connections). Since I upload a lot of pictures, I also add a lot of coordinates. I would like to know, if something like this is implemented in the tool and if so, what is the treshold (I should avoid). I really feel depressed for being a DDoS attack :-D
- Or theoretically... do you know about any similar od a bit different tool that does or can do the same job here on commons? Thanks! --Aktron (talk) 16:28, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- I also frequently use the geocoding tools, and they frequently fail. I think this is because they all use Toolserver, which is unreliable. Probably that is because it is chronically overloaded by what all the users are doing, rather than because it identifies particular heavy users as enemies. There is a plan for Wikimedia Foundation to migrate many jobs to their own servers, which will get enough money to work properly. So, what I do is, when the geotools don't work, do something else for a few hours. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:24, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Migrating GeoCommons on WMFLabs
editToolServer is deprecated to WMFLabs, as well as not maintained well, so some users are experiencing problems with ToolServer tools periodically. If you'll have time, could you please try to migrate GeoCommons on WMFLabs servers? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:33, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
- There is also an offer to help: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/toolserver-l/2013-October/006326.html . Also if you have time problems.
- We really need your Commons geocoding tools and your kml export also in the future. Alternatively, can you publish your source code somewhere? --Kolossos (talk) 18:50, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
kml export problem on french categories
editHello,
I encounter a problem with your script kmlexport only when I tries to create kml on categories.
This link for example returns me only one article which use the french template Coord. But now, for geolocalizing articles, we use Lua scripting. I think it is the source of the problem.
Could you adapt your script? Thanks -- Xfigpower (pssst) 16:14, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Alright, I've fixed it. The tool expected to find protocol relative links as on enwp, but frwp is still linking to geohack with http only. The single article it found was because in the database the article is still linking to the toolserver, while all the other articles point to labs. --Para (talk) 23:15, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your reactivity -- Xfigpower (pssst) 16:19, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Bug report for your NewFiles toolserver tool
editHi Para. Your tool is fantastic - I use it all the time... thanks for your work! There is what seems to be a bug (maybe to do with string escaping/parsing)... When File:"Fontana"_cemento.jpg was displayed by your tool, it was linked to [11]. The filename starting with a double quote seems to have broken it. Cheers, Storkk (talk) 11:48, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
- This is also true of File:Doublefaced, "Двуличен" на Себастиан Бинек.jpg, for which your tool produces the link: File:Doublefaced,... so it's almost certainly an unescaped double quote that is causing this. Cheers, Storkk (talk) 12:52, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you're liking it. I added another escape for those now. Thanks for spotting! --Para (talk) 19:40, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

- The query killer has been slaughtering the updater for the last six months, so no updates have gone through. I'll set up some less database intensive method for updating. --Para (talk) 22:56, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer. Do you think this setup will take place in the foreseeable future? Regards --Pustekuchen2014 (talk) 20:03, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Toolserver shutdown approaching
editHi Para!
You are among the people who do still have active tools on the toolserver and some of them are among the more frequented ones, according to the toolserver's logs. Meaning: They are popular. What are your plans concerning migration to Tool Labs as the toolserver is going to shut down at the end of the month (see toolserver-l)? Can we somehow support you to get it done before June 30th?

Geonotice tool on English Wikipedia
editHi!
Could you take a look into en:MediaWiki talk:Gadget-geonotice-core.js#Google maps? Helder 20:21, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Error: "GeoCommons database is currently unavailable, please try again later"
editThis happens when I try to map images on OSM and Google maps; I presume it's our error since it happens on both. It's been down for three days now; any idea what the problem might be? Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Commons:Geocoding outdated
editIt seem that the database is very out-of-day. Pictures of 2014 are missing.(Example) What's the reason? I hope you can repair it. --Kolossos (talk) 18:24, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- The query for updates on the toolserver db started getting killed a year ago, and never recovered. I didn't have much hope for it on toollabs, but after starting it over there for the first time just now, it's not db intensive at all! It'll catch up soon. --Para (talk) 20:32, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you so much – both for the tool in general and making it update again in particular. Great work! --El Grafo (talk) 18:48, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
One more question regarding the maps: is there a reason why only images tagged with {{Location}} are shown? I'd expect also images with {{Object location}} to show up there. --тнояsтеn ⇔ 11:09, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Files where the coordinates were deleted, remain in the map (while new ones are added quite quickly). For example [12]. Could you fix that please? --тнояsтеn ⇔ 10:23, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Done. --Para (talk) 13:13, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. But the files are still shown in the map. When will this take effect? --тнояsтеn ⇔ 17:52, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
GeoGroupTemplate down again
editJust thought I'd send you a note (in case you have it set up to email you about talkpage notes) letting you know that GeoGroupTemplate has stopped working in the last 24 hours; around 1600 yesterday server time, it was working fine, but whenever I've tried it since about midnight server time, it returns the error that I reported at the end of June. Thanks fo ryour work! Nyttend (talk) 13:07, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- The tools labs grid engine seems to have gone down, so new jobs can't be started at the moment. They have a general status page at https://tools.wmflabs.org/?status for monitoring all tools. We'll have to wait for the wmflabs admins to get to it. --Para (talk) 14:02, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- And now apparently it's working, so I take it that they or you fixed things. Thanks for the maintenance! Nyttend (talk) 03:39, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

kmlexport not working
editHi Para, you kmlexport tooling on the WMF Labs server stopped working. We are currently using it to deploy all Wiki Loves Earth sites (e.g. like this base on this listing). Could you have a look into it? we are a bit concerned because it is of great help for the contest participants and WLE begins this Friday. If the tool is not an option anymore, do you know another tool or option that we could use? Thanks! Best, Poco2 17:43, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
- https://tools.wmflabs.org/?status said that the web service was running, but it wasn't. I've started it again... Oh, and Google Maps doesn't support direct kml loading anymore, so your Google link will never work again. People have found Bing and OSM to be good alternatives. --Para (talk) 18:21, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your quick answer! Indeed the KML import in Bing worked again. I have also replaced the Google Maps links with OSM links as you can see here, using a OSM-based KML viewer tool. It seems to work, we are saved :) Poco2 20:01, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
Geo-coding todo
editHello,
I am using quite a lot the geo-coding todo tool and I like it. It looks like at the moment it will erxclude any image that has either the Location or Object location template. Would it be possible to have an option to choose the template i.e.e to be able to see images that have Object location but not location?
Thanks,
kmlexport and bbox limit
edithi, does kmlexport support bbox limit of its output? I am making leaflet map of specific Category and loading everything at once is probably not a good idea.
thank you --Walley (talk) 08:00, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

kmlexport not working for articles in the French Wikipedia
editHello, the GeoGroup template in the French Wikipedia, which calls kmlexport, has not been working for almost 2 months now. The bug appeared when the code of the French coord template was slightly changed on May 22nd. But the way the template was called inside the articles has not changed.
To take an example, have you any idea why the first link below returns coordinates and not the second one returns only "No geocoded items found", although both articles (en:France and fr:France) contain similar calls to the coord template?
- https://tools.wmflabs.org/kmlexport?project=fr&article=France
Thank you. Seudo (talk) 15:10, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your fix of October 1st. See fr:Discussion modèle:GeoGroup for the 2 remaining issues, Bing; it would be great they could be fixed as well. Regards, Jack ma (talk) 07:03, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- On Bing, the bad news: Microsoft broke KML support in Bing and it can't be fixed in the tool. Some time in 2015, Bing Maps started serving a "new and improved" Maps to some people, offering an opt-out to return to the old version. The new version no longer supported the mapurl URL parameter that allowed a simple overlay of external KML content on the map, but the old version continued to be available for some time. No more.
- The good news: Much like the Google change couple of months earlier, KML content can still be used on custom Maps pages with Javascript. Someone did that with Google Maps at https://tools.wmflabs.org/wp-world/googlmaps-proxy.php. Microsoft have some promising Bing V8 code samples that might help someone get started creating a similar Bing Maps landing page. --Para (talk) 21:15, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Hello Para. kmlexport still doesn't work on French wikipedia. I don't understand why and not able to solution it. Thousands of pages are involved. Please have a look here and there. Help has been asked on the French wiki here, but nobody knows. If you could find a solution it would be great... Regards, Jack ma (talk) 05:01, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
Geocommons kml showing redirects instead of target files
editOutput from https://tools.wmflabs.org/geocommons/kml?f=photos&simple&BBOX=-89.639,40.91,-89.047,41.149&VIEWSIZE=4000x4000 shows redirects that have not had coordinates or thumbnails since July 2017:
- File:Lake Wildwood, Roberts Township, IL 61375, USA - panoramio.jpg
- File:Lake Wildwood, Roberts Township, IL 61375, USA - panoramio (5).jpg
but the output does not show the current filenames, which have good coordinates:
- File:Dogs at Lake Wildwood, Hopewell Township, Marshall County, IL 61375, USA - panoramio.jpg
- File:Lake Wildwood, Hopewell Township, Marshall County, IL 61375, USA - panoramio (5).jpg
They were renamed and redirected in July 2017, 6 months ago. Is the database stale, or are redirects being included for some reason, or am I doing something wrong? (I take this output, and then filter out all files that are in a category tree — for example, Category:Marshall County, Illinois. The filenames that remain are the files that have coordinates but no Commons categories. Right now, these two redirects always remain in my results, since they are never categorized.) --Closeapple (talk) 18:08, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
kmlexport
editHello, I would like to co-maintain your tool kmlexport. Currently I have a patch for some encoding issues with your tool and I would like to watch over the tool as this tool is still important for cswiki and dewiki (and probably frwiki and enwiki and some others too). I run my patch on https://tools.wmflabs.org/kmlexport-cswiki/, but this splitting of the original tool is really not good I think. Would it be possible to add me to the maintainers, please? --Dvorapa (talk) 13:50, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Geocommons/kml not showing most results
editHello Para,
Can you help track down why so few results come back; Category:Feldbahn- & Industriemuseum Wiesloch, shows lots of images, all geo-coded. commons-on-osm.php, which calls [13] geocommons/kml and geocommons/kml show 3 in total. Any idea what the cause the is? Many appreciations, —Sladen (talk) 05:16, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
- It hasn't been updating for several years. If you were to sort the images in that category by the date the location was added, you'd see those 3 images in one group. Ten years ago the separate database the tool uses was refreshing once a minute, but after some changes to Toolserver and Labs or the amount of Commons data or something, the query runs too long. I have imported data from the commons database dumps sometimes, but that's not practical even as a cronjob. The whole thing needs a redesign. mw:API:Geosearch says that coordinate data is available over the MediaWiki HTTP API, which would probably work nicely with a completely client-side map site that doesn't depend on Labs at all. I don't know if the different types of coordinate data here are handled as we'd expect, but that can probably be addressed in the extension. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=help&modules=query geosearch --Para (talk) 19:28, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
- Para, thanks for the reply. I would like to have a go at fixing the database/tool/import, instead of just leaving it broken. According to wikitech:User_talk:BryanDavis#geocommons/kml source the source is under
/data/project/geocommons/…
. Would you be able to add `sladen` as a second maintainer at toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/geocommons, so that it is possible to start debugging, and/or looking if the import can be chunked somehow to make it less fragile? —Sladen (talk) 19:19, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

Geocoding to-do
editHi Para! I've been a long term user of the Geocoding to-do tool. However due to some changes in the database (AFAIK) there is not any longer a possibility to search for non-geocoded images by an username. I have a user category that I use to circumvent it with, but it does ommit some stuff. Is there some chance this can be fixed in the tool? Thank you. Aktron (talk) 07:00, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
- Fixed. It was indeed the database change for mw:Actor migration. --Para (talk) 22:24, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
Toolforge.org update for EPSG3067 redirector
editHi, the tools.wmflabs.org is moving to toolforge.org and it seems that migration period is ending so least geohack redirects are down now (tools.wmflabs.org/~para -> para.toolforge.org redirect works but the result is 404). So there is something broken or least down and it looks like same as phab:T257481.

- Fixed, there was a conflict between my redirects and the toolforge.org ones. Check out the browser's Network tab in Devtools to see how many jumps those links have made over the years. :)
- For your second link, the service doesn't cover those coordinates, but you probably ment something like this:
- --Para (talk) 20:05, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! I was just blindly copying 404 links so i didn't know if those should work. It seems that i should check which city map services are still working anyway as the paikkalinkki-formats seems to be changing over the years. --Zache (talk) 21:16, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
