Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Hello!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. Siebrand 10:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Your banner Image:Qxz-ad89.gif promoting Wikimedia Commons said: " Wikimedia Commons needs your free, non-commercial images ". Commons doesn't accept non-commercial images, as you should know being a flickrreviewer. As it was misleading, i have deleted it. You're welcome to upload a new version without the non-commercial text. Also give the images better names, like Commons-banner-Wikimedia-campaign-2007.gif Platonides 17:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- I fixed it. It's "free, commercial images". And, I incorporated it into the Qxz-ads on .en, too. Please don't delete. Miranda 17:17, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:Dionnewarwick.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Ownership of pages
editHi, maybe you're familiar with the guidelines COM:OWN and WP:OWN. We don't appreciate edits like this. Rocket000 23:23, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, he took my template without attributing my work under CC-BY-SA. In Wikipedia, contribs are under GFDL, but under some cases you have to attribute the author for your work. I attribute my contributions under CC-BY-SA. So, under that license, if another user wants to use my work, they must attribute the author and I was attributing my work, since the author did not follow the guidelines. Cheers. miranda 23:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't have a problem with him using my work, but he must attribute me according to the license. miranda 23:33, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- That only applies to media files, not templates. All text is released under the GFDL. Sure, you can add things on top of it, but you can't remove the GFDL option. Attribution can not be required in this way. Have you ever seen another template have someone's name in it? What if it had a hundred authors? What if the template was used on articles? That would totally go against WP's policies. I'm not asking you to undo your edits, but I do think you need to rethink this. Rocket000 23:52, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I have. w:User_talk:Miranda/L#Thankspam, and no, I will not undo my edits. I made this template from scratch. Sorry. miranda 00:23, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Please re-read my comment. I wasn't asking you to undo your edits. And you're welcome. :) Rocket000 00:54, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

self-review
editHi Miranda, for flickrreview you shouldn't review your own uploads. The idea is to have a third party review the copyright status in case it's challenged by the flickr uploader who changes their licensing options. I'm also a trusted user so I reviewed your photos that I saw you had done that to (two recent shoe ones) but if there are others you should put them back to {{Flickrreview}} so that they get reviewed by a bot or by another user. Thanks, Calliopejen 19:11, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

License issues
editHi there. I've recently changed the license of a picture you uploaded from GFDL to PD. The image, Image:JFKJr2.jpg, is simply a crop from the Public Domain image Image:JFKJr.jpg, and therefore you are not authorized to change the license or claim the work as your own (you claim the source as "self made"). Thanks! Save-Me-Oprah 00:56, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:JeanNorrisBaylor.jpg. This image is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS ([email protected]).
Unless the permission information is given, the image may be speedy deleted after seven days. Thank you. ShakataGaNai Talk 07:53, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Your RfA
editDear Miranda,
Since there was no community consensus at this point to grant you sysop tools, I'm afraid it was closed as unsuccessful. You strike me as a hard working user, interested in the project and always ready to ask when in doubt; these are great qualities of yours. Please don't take the criticisms that were stated on your RfA as negative; I think there were very constructive comments, and some good advice. Please do keep up with your good work, this project needs all the help that can get :). Cheers, Patrícia msg 21:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. miranda 21:38, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- I would second Patricia's advice to take comments, good and bad, on board, and thanks for the thank you :) Best wishes. Lar: t/c 22:16, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Notice of namespace-rename "Image" -> "File"
editDear user, the MediaWiki developers recently announced that the "Image:" namespace is going to be renamed to "File:". "Image:" will remain an alias. The canonical namespace name wgCanonicalNamespace will change from "Image" to "File".
I noticed that you use wgCanonicalNamespace in either your monobook.js page or a JavaScript file in your userspace (check this list).
Please check and replace all occurrences of
wgCanonicalNamespace == "Image"
with
wgNamespaceNumber == 6
to ensure that your scripts keep working. Thanks! --Dschwen (talk) 18:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

- Hi, if you could "re-license" this image to CC-BY-SA-2.0 that would be great. Thanks. OSX (talk • contributions) 09:27, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- OSX - if you would look at the rationale, the suit is copyrighted. Thus, both images should be speedily deleted per OTRS. miranda 20:07, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- Miranda, you are mistaken. However, I DO think the deletion should stand IF the deletion request was from an identifiable person in the photo. (I haven't seen the photo...) --Elvey (talk) 23:46, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar.
