Corinthian Helmet

edit

Hello Matthias. My name is John Harper. I'm working on a book project about ancient Greece, and I'd love to use your Corinthian helmet photo. Can you provide the image in a higher-resolution format? The original full-res photo file would be ideal. You can contact me at oneseven(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks a lot. - July 10, 2006.

:Category::Roman Legion images

edit

Please add these images in Category:Weapons or its subdirectories also where other user will expect to find such kind of images.

Note that your category name contains extra :. Good idea to include :Category::Roman Legion (or renamed one) into other category(s).

You could use GFDL-self tag for your images.

Thanks. I'm changing it. The additional categories will be done later, I've to check them first. MatthiasKabel 14:50, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Autor

edit

Hallo Matthias, wenn Du das Foto von der römischen Statue selbst geschossen hast, schreibe das bitte ausdrücklich dazu. Nur "Photo taken at ..." ohne ein "by" reicht eigentlich nicht aus für die Lizenz. Du kannst entweder "Photo taken by User:MatthiasKabel" oder "Photo taken by uploader" oder "Photo by Matthias Kabel" oder ähnliches dazu schreiben.

--AndreasPraefcke 22:04, 28 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Terracotta figurines

Hi! Nice photos of terracotta figurines (e.g. Image:Terrakottastatue of young girl greece 3 century bC.jpg or Image:Terrakota Statue eines Makedoniers 3 Jhdt v Chr.jpg). Do you have more information about them, such as the museum they are stored in, the region of Greece they come from, etc.? Thanks in advance, Jastrow 09:44, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Salzburg Schloss Mirabell Zwergerlgarten Zwerg 17.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-selfto release it under the GFDL orPD-selfto release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate category and optionally place the images on topic pages (galleries), or do both (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you.

Hi! May I know what lenses you currently use for your pictures, and specifically for this one? The picture itself is good but the noise could be reduced and there may be some distorsion due to the use of a wideangle. I own a copy of DXO, a software designed to correct these two problems, and I'd like to run your picture through it. Problem is the soft is camera- and lens-dependent. I know about yout camera thanks to EXIF data, but I still need to know which lens you used. Thanks in advance, Jastrow 16:41, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Camera: Canon 350 D , or digital rebell, this lens is a Sigma 20 mm 1.8 DG EX, thanks for the question, I like your pictures. MatthiasKabel 08:15, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Rats, the lens is not supported yet. Still, I'll try the noise reduction and white balance. Nice pictures from Lecce btw, I see we both went to Italy for our last holidays :-) Jastrow 17:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

I noticed you took several pictures in the Glyptothek, of very good quality. I was myself in Munich on February, and I did quite a bit work on this museum. Still, there are missing photos, or photos needing to be improved. I was wondering if you could help, by filling the gaps.

Also eine Frage, daß mich nicht in Ruhe lässt: was is »Hochtoupierte«?

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. Hi, I've delete the category "Festung Hohensalzburg" from the mentioned image. The gun is indeed in the fortress, but nobody expect photos of individual modern guns when looking for pictures of the fortress. Perhaps we can create a category "Museum in the Festung Hoshensalzburg" or "Rainermuseum in Hohensalzburg" and cat all these images with the new category. MatthiasKabel 15:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was actually thinking of doing that very same thing, but laziness got the best of me. I've broken up the category into exterior, interior, and within the latter: museum. Danke! --Bossi (talkgallerycontrib) 18:14, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Roman pugios

edit

Thank you for posting up pictures of Roman pugios and their sheaths. I notice though that some of the images are of incorrect reconstructions and some of the dating is wrong.

There is no evidence for any genuine Roman dagger sheath having had brass or other copper-alloy plates attached to it. The widespread misconception that these existed is due to a photograph which appeared in a book by Dan Peterson (The Roman Legions Recreated in Colour Photographs. The reconstructed sheath in that photograph was based on a line drawing of a sheath from Kempton which was actually an iron sheath decorated with inlaid silver and decorative rivets. The reconstructor mistood the silver inlaid borders of the decorative fields in the drawing for the edges of plates and mistakenly made his reproduction with rivetted-on brass plates. Therefore any reproduction Roman sheath you see with these added brass plates is incorrect and should not be featured.

As to the dating, to date the only daggers which have been found in second century contexts are the grip plate of a handle from Bar Hill in Scotland and a dagger from Buciumi. There is also a sculpture showing a soldier with a dagger dating to early in the second century AD. Most of those you feature as second century daggers are actually deifitely first century daggers and sheaths, including those form Carnuntum.

Paul Geddes (AKA Crispvs on Roman Army Talk)

Thanks for your hint. I've checked my photos, they were taken in the museum of Carnuntum and the description of the museum said middle of 1. century to end of 2.century. (I've taken photos of the description also) MatthiasKabel 21:10, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I have a question on the above photo of yours. Could you specify the (sub)species name?; I mean I wonder whether this monkey is Cebus apella apella or C. a. libidinosus, or even another subspecies of C. apella. The reason I propose such a question is because C. a. libidinosus, C. a. nigritus, and C. a. xanthosternos are now distinct species from C. a. apella in most cases, and are frequently classified as C. libidinosus, C. nigritus, and C. xanthosternos, respectively; and because they are sometimes difficult for non-morphologists to distinguish based on their morphological features, due to their varied anatomy. Thank you. 122.130.50.32 03:26, 3 August 2008 (UTC) Reply

Thank you very much for your response to me. If you would have an opportunity to get such information (of course, I never intend to bother you to visit it again!), I would be happy if you would let me know it. I am Shaz in the Wikipedia Japanese. (I should add that the place the monkey was from would have the same signigicanse as her/his (sub)species name. Hm, probably something like that. Can you tell me what programme you use for your work? Maybe I can also familiarise myself with it. Gryffindor (talk) 19:43, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
For RAW workflow bibble from www.bibblelabs.com, but if I have a look at your picture there will be no need for this program. So, for editing gimp en:GIMP, it's a free software available for windows, linux and Mac OS. Main disadvantage is no 16bit editing, but is no issue if you get jpg from your camera. There are many tutorials on the web, a very good video podcast http://meetthegimp.org (english, but strong german accent). For cleaning up noise there is a very nice plugin greycstoration, noiseninja works also very well but it's not free. To clean up the background I use the magic wand or color picker to remove the most of the background after that I use a eraser with very smooth edges and "draw" the contour in a way that the edge is smooth after then I fill the background with the desired color. MatthiasKabel (talk) 08:19, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi there, I have been working with GIMP just like you advised me, however some tricks I still don't know. Do you think you could help improve these images here Image:Vindobona Hoher Markt-100.JPG, Image:Vindobona Hoher Markt-101.JPG, Image:Vindobona Hoher Markt-142.JPG, Image:Vindobona Hoher Markt-89.JPG? thanks. Hello, MatthiasKabel!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Girls enjoying cotton candy.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commonist licenses

edit

Dear MatthiasKabel,

As you might know Wikimedia is currently migrating from the GFDL to cc-by-sa-3.0. Wikimedia Commons is also migrating and we're down to less than 1500 files (started with about 1,8M files). Unfortunatly this number keeps growing because Commonist contains outdated license templates. You appear to be running Commonist, could you please change the following lines in your license.txt? You can also copy a new licenses.txt from here.

GFDL should be changed to GFDL
GFDL should be changed to GFDL
cc-by-sa-2.5 should be changed to cc-by-sa-3.0

Can I also fix the images you have already uploaded by adding ?

Thank you very much,--MGA73 (talk) 19:33, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

No problem, I will fix it before the next commonist upload. You can change an image uploaded by me to 11:07, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. The images should be fixed now. --MGA73 (talk) 19:59, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Noticed you uploaded some new images for us. Great! However license is not changed - example File:Panthera onca zoo Salzburg 2009 10.jpg. Was that the plan? --MGA73 (talk) 19:16, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
