editHihi the same image deleted "Image:Hrant Dink.jpg" is still present in en: wiki see 1 why??
- Hi! The image is allowed in the English Wikipedia because it is used with a fair use rationale there. Fair use images are allowed in the en.wikipedia, however they are not at Commons and in most other Wikipedia projects. For more information see Material under the fair use clause is not allowed on the Commons. --Matt314 19:22, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

editHola. Agradezco tu atencion. —the preceding unsigned comment is by Vary Ingweion (talk • contribs) Matt314 22:22, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hola! --Matt314 22:22, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Image question
editYou have marked Image:Farmand_1947.png for deletion. I originally uploaded this image, which is a scan of the cover of a now defunct Norwegian magazine. The cover design itself is approx. 100 years old. The only image on the cover is a technical drawing and a very simple logo consisting of three letters, none of which are copyright material if I've understood the Wikipedia (c) policy correctly. The company is defunct as well. As far as I can establish, there is no copyright attached to this image.Asav 14:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Asav, I was confused by the "defunct magazine". In most juristifications the copyright term does not end at the time where a company does not exist anymore. If the design is 100 years old it might qualify for PD-Old. If the "new elements" are PD-ineligible, it'll work. --Matt314 22:27, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer. However, I have no idea as to go about this... Could you fix the tags? Asav 12:53, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've marked it PD-Old.I ope I've done this correctly.
- Thanks for your answer. However, I have no idea as to go about this... Could you fix the tags? Asav 12:53, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Re: Fair Use is not allowed on Commons
editHi !
Well, I know there was a problem with the licencing of theese pictures, I wrote "Fair Use" in order to have a little time to solve the problem. In fact, I can't found licencing about "promotional material". The four pictures I upload under Fair Use licencing have been made in order to promote a music festival. You can download it for free on the official website of the event (http://www.nuits-sonores.com/2006/nuitssonores/archives_home.php, look for "voir le visuel"), and they are intended to be distribuate as much as possible. For me, writing an article about an event can't be complete without including this kind of stuff, wich are the story of the "look" of the event.
So can you help me founding the correct licencing ?

editHello, I saw the note that you add in my discusion page for warning. Sadly, it's broken Korean so that I can't exactly understand what you're trying to say to me. I guess you used some crappy translation tool from English or German to Korean. Here is my story. Several days ago, I just notied the new indication, "Common share alike non commercial in the selection menu when I uploaded picutres. Therefore, I tested the new added function with the supposedly not allowed images from Flickr. I got that you wiki administrator just teased and fooled me. I know I'm not gonna upload any non-free picture unless getting a permission from copyright holders. But I think the new menu would be better off from the selection bar. It made me confused and has still possiblities for others to misunderstand. --Applebee 16:52, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Commons dupes
--Magnus Manske 16:47, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Call to arms
editHi Matt314. I write to you and all other users listed on the Welcome log helpers list, except for EugeneZelenko this Call to arms. The reason for it is that I have seen very little activity on the project by you. Because of this we have most probably failed to check the contributions of thousands of new users and have not been able to inform them of the practices on Wikimedia Commons in a timely fashion, causing more work for us and the contributor later in the process.
I would like to urge you to make a habit of checking at least 10 or so new user's contributions from the Commons:Welcome log each day you are active here. We welcome about 200 new users with contributions each day and we currently have 19 users on the helpers list. You can find links to some helpful scripts on the welcome log page, that are likely to make your life a lot easier. If there are no users to be checked that have been welcomed today, please attend to a previous log. Thank you for your renewed attention. Cheers! Siebrand 12:21, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the massage. I will try to more actively welcome newbies again. However, at present the time I can spent at Wikimedia projects is very limited, so I hardly will find time to do so. --Matt314 02:27, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Help with licensing
editDear Matt314, because I am new in Wikimedia I need help to find the appropriate license for these photos:
These photos are not copyrighted and are in free use in the Republic of Macedonia. Nobody claims their copyright. can you please direct me to the right license template, and explain me the procedure to obtain permission under the GNU Free Documentation License. I will be very grateful. Thanks in advance. Revizionist 11:52, 21 септември 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Revizionist, it seems like the exception made in the copyright law of Macedonia (article 31) is not as free as it needs to be for Commons (see deletion request). Some of the pictures are tagged as "PD-ineligible" now, but I have strong doubt that this is accurate tagging either. In Germany and the EU photographic cannot be ineligible for copyright, so the best idea would be to inquire the copyright status of these images at the archives you took them from. Unfortunately they might still be copyrighted (and although it is very unlikely someone might claim copyright protection) and might need to be deleted from Commons. Sorry for not being a great help... --Matt314 21:07, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
editThank you for alerting me that my recent upload did not contain a copyright tag, I have now fixed it. However, this is an incredibly frustrating situation that I've run into before, and I'm curious if you have an suggestions for fixing it.
During the upload process, I clicked to indicate that it is "entirely my own work," and then selected a license from the "best practices" section of the drop-down menu.
Unfortunately, none of this information was retained when I uploaded the file -- no copyright/license tag was actually placed on the photo.
Can you think of any way to get this fixed? I have seen several editors come and go due to frustrating inconsistencies like this -- if newbies do not feel their work is valued, they will move on, to the detriment of the commons. -Peteforsyth 20:01, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Peteforsyth, thanks for adding a license tag. I personally have never had your problem, but I haven't uploaded many images lately. However if you experience this problem quite often, you could ask at the village pump because I have no idea how to fix this issue, sorry. --Matt314 14:50, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks Matt, that's just what I needed. I'll inquire over there. -Peteforsyth 05:51, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Because these were taken by my father, it was suggested to me by an Admin, that GFDL was the best license. PD is built into my TypeItIn.com program and I didn't notice the two different licenses. Image deletion warning | Image:Visicalc.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Image Tagging Image:Antoine_Augustin_Cournot.jpeg
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Antoine_Augustin_Cournot.jpeg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Uploading Games Screenshots
editSorry, but I am not familiarized with United States laws. Could I, according with US laws, upload how many screenshots i want from free games (in case, MINERVA: Metastasis, a free Half Life 2 mod)? If not, please tell me how deleting uploaded images for miself. Thanks. —the preceding unsigned comment was added by Leohenrique0908 (talk • contribs)
- If you can upload the screenshot depends on the license the game is released under. In the Wikipedia article MINERVA (mod) it does not mention any license so I would assume that it is copyrighted (free enough for Commons does not mean you don't have to pay for it, but that one is allowed to modify and distribute an image, even comercially). In case it is copyrighted you cannot upload screenshots to commons, however it is possible to upload the screenshots to English Wikipedia directly, like en:Image:Metastasis helicopter and vista.jpg.
- To delete own pictures, you can simply write reason in the image description, an administrator will then delete the image. --Matt314 17:22, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- I dont know the license of the game, but it is free, so I believe it is not copyrighted. And if it is, I can`t upload to commoms, but can I upload directly in Wikipedia?
- Another point is: how can I know if a program or even a webpage is copyrighted? I dont have a lot of pacience to read those 20-pages texts looking for a particular information. Leohenrique0908 18:30, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know that much about the game, but if it is based on Half Live, it will be copyrighted (derivative work). I am sorry I cannot help you about the computer game's license, you might ask at the village pump or at Commons talk:Licensing. If you want to include the image in the English Wikipedia you can upload it there, other languages might not allow fair use.
- To know whether you are allowed to take a picture from a website: Only if it explicitly states that is it released under a license that allowes redistributen and modification for both non-commercial and commercial use, then you can upload it here. This licenses would likely to be GFDL, Public Domain or a Creative Commons license (that does contain ND or NC). If it does not say anything you have to assume that the material is copyrighted. --Matt314 19:28, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
If you think it is... A photo of any sculpture migth be too... OK. Do what you have to do. I read the article and you can be right. Elektron 14:18, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your understanding! In such cases I do not delete the file by myself but tag it as "derivative", so another admin will have a look at it and eventually deleted it. --Matt314 16:52, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

editThank you for uploading those pictures for Lingyan Temple, they are very good, especially the one looking down on the temple from Mount Tai. editDear Matt, You have nominated this picture for delition. I have already express in the tags the nature fo the picture and the copiright status. Could you advice me what esle is required? Thanks!--Arcillaroja 12:39, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, first of all I am not sure about the current copyright status: Is it true that the photographer of this photo released the rights? Second, a permission for "public use in wikipedia and wikicommons" is not sufficient, as the GFDL, CC-BY-SA or any other accepted license also makes it possible for everyone to reuse, modify and distribute the image, also in commercial aspects, as long as the requirements of the license (e.g. crediting the author, put a derivative work under the same license) are met. So it would be necessary to have a permission like Commons:Email templates. --Matt314 07:51, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- HI Matt, thank you for the update. Since I am the photographer, I asure you that i want to released the rights. As for the email, Presently, I only have a hotmail account. Would it be acceptable to use my hotmail account to send that email?
- Btw, I also added the licensing for creative commons, since this image has been available and currently used in the the web site for years. And I want to state here that I am also the webmaster of the web site. This is a little tedious, so I hope everything is in place now. Thank you!--Arcillaroja 11:14, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- Well, if you are the photographer and did not only do the scan than it is fine, however it often happens that people think they own the copyright of an image (file) if they scan a third party photograph. Just make clear that you are the author and for best practice, sent an e-mail to the address, you can use you Hotmail account I think. --Matt314 13:33, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js
editDear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.
This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.
To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Du hast vor einiger Zeit dieses Bild hochgeladen. Leider wurde das Bild unter falschem Titel gespeichert. Es muss natürlich, wie in der Beschreibung richtig angegeben, "Sulzauer Hof" heißen. The author is the one who sent the photo to photosubmission OTRS queue. However, I didn't copy the name as OTRS emails are considered confidential and it doesn't explicitely give permission to use his name (after all, he probably doesn't mind, but I preferred to play safe). editCiao scusami ma non esiste nessun modo per caricare su commons una file preso da Google? :-( --Corvettec6r (talk) 10:28, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hello! Unfortunately the use of this kind of images is only possible in Wikipedias that allow "Fair Use", for example the English Wikipedia. Commons doe not allow this, you either have to get permission from the photographer or take a picture by yourself - I know that this can be hard, in the case of rare objects, but there is no other way to get a free image. --Matt314 (talk) 08:44, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 19:51, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Hold on
editHi Matt314, I see you deleted some of the categories user:MGA73 created. These categories will fill up when Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph starts so could you please not do that? Multichill (talk) 14:06, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for that, the deletion reason sounded valid for me (wrong cat name), so I executed the request. Thanks for letting me know, won't do so in the future! --Matt314 (talk) 15:31, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
editDear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Question
editHi Matt314, I have a one question to you. Is it normal to add texts in category as it done here or not. I have removed that text but another user reverted my edits. I think that text must be deleted, because its only original research.--Δαβίδ (talk) 14:15, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm, in my opinion the collapsed version that User:Jarekt suggested is ok. It would be preferable to have an article on en.wikipedia, maybe you can urge the user to write an article there and then only use the introductory sentence plus a link to the Wikipedia article here on Commons? --Matt314 (talk) 14:33, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- There is articles in some wikis about that symbol, but some of them are already nominated for deletion and original researches are removed from that articles.--Δαβίδ (talk) 14:39, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2016 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

- Hi Matt, further to the above I'm just letting you know that your admin privileges have now been removed on Meta by a Wikimedia steward as per your request on Sunday. As you are an experienced editor, you were instead added to the autopatrolled user group (which doesn't affect your editing anyway). Thank you for you service as an administrator, and I hope you will stay active on Commons as a regular contributor. Of course, please do feel free to re-apply for adminship when you get more active :-) Thanks! odder (talk) 14:15, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
File:Matthew Paris - William Marshal.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
