Wiki Loves Monuments is over
editUploading pictures of monuments is great. Thank you for your continued participation. But there's no need to keep tagging your photos as part of WLM 2012; it ended more then 10 days ago. Ntsimp (talk) 03:19, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012!Dear KLOTZ, Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 350,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from 36 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place. You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help. To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. Kind regards, |

Your uploads
editThe images that you have uploaded recently are some of the best pictures that I've seen on Commons in some time, both in quality and historic value. They are remarkable, and I thank you for donating them to Commons. Can you please give some their backstory to how you got such an impressive collection of photos of hard-to-reach historic locations? --GrapedApe (talk) 18:48, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

user cats
editHi KLOTZ, user-categories, such as your Category:PHOTOGRAPHS BY USER: KLOTZ aren't part of the general category system of Commons, but should be tagged as user category, as is your Category:Photographs by User:KLOTZ. As the first cat was anyway redundant to the second cat, I've recategorized all content from Category:PHOTOGRAPHS BY USER: KLOTZ to Category:Photographs by User:KLOTZ. --Túrelio (talk) 13:56, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
editSome contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

- File:ORNATE ENTRANCE TO THE LIBRARY.jpg
Yours sincerely, russavia (talk) 02:52, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Taivo (talk) 07:57, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Translation You wanted to know why the pictures of the national library were removed. In Belarus, there is no freedom of panorama. Photos of the National Library of Belarus (and more generally of new houses in Belarus) is therefore not allowed here.
File:NATIONAL LIBRARY OF BELARUS - MINSK.jpg
editI am copying what you wrote at the above file here:
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THESE PICTURES WERE DELETED. I TRIED TO CONTACT THE PERSON WHO DELETED THEM BUT COULD NOT GET THROUGH. I SPENT SEVERAL WEEKS IN MINSK LIVING AT THE HOME OF MY DAUGHTER WHOSE HUSBAND WAS THE CHARGE D'AFFAIRES OF THE UNITED STATES IN BELARUS SO I KNOW THESE PICTURES ARE LEGITIMATE PICTURES. HER HOME WAS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF THE LIBRARY WHICH I VISYED SEVERAL TIMES.
- The basic issue with the photograph is that the National Library of Belarus is a copyrighted building, so even though your picture of it is fine (you agreed to a free license for your work as a photographer), the building itself cannot be freely photographed and then published. Commons is only for images that are free in all aspects, since the building itself is copyrighted by the architect, that makes any photo of it ineligible for Commons. You could put the photo of the library on the English Wikipedia under a Fair Use claim (as there is an article on the library there). Please email me if you want to put the picture on Wikipedia. Ruhrfisch (talk) 21:10, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Copied from Commons Upload Help:
HI, CAN RUHRFISCH PLEASE WRITE TO ME AT MY EMAIL ADDRESS. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REACH HIM OTHERWISE AND I WISH TO COMMUNICATE SOME INFORMATION CONCERNING THE BELARUS DELETION. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO HAVE HIM PUT IT ON THE BRITISH EDITION OF WIKIPEDIA. ROY KLOTZ

- It was renamed to File:Hotel Nipton in Nipton, California.jpg. Just updating you for your own info. (As the uploading user, you probably have it on your watchlist anyway.) --Closeapple (talk) 22:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:CHAMBERLIN HOTEL.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:CHAMBERLIN HOTEL.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Unfortunately there is no Freedom of Panorama in Belarus for targets whose architects/ designers are still alive or it is less than 50 years since their death. Thus even excellent photos like this which might violate copyright laws, could be deleted from Commons. Kindly note, however, that citation use might still be allowed. In such a case this (these) photo(s) should be - without delay - saved to and used from national wikipedia (as they are likely to be deleted in Commons). File source is not properly indicated: File:EVELYNTON.jpg
editThis media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:EVELYNTON.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:EVELYNTON.jpg]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. editProbably not a good idea to upload lots of photos with black bars along the top and bottom. If they're DVD screen captures, then you would need to explain more about the source... AnonMoos (talk) 01:35, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Just checking
editI think the photo
File:Bedens brook road bridge.jpg
is actually the similarly named "Bedens Brook ROAD Bridge", there already being a photo for the "Bedens Brook Bridge."
"Bedens Brook Bridge" has a different structure (2 arches and no high wall in the middle) and from what I can tell from from Google Street View is correctly placed on the list.
If I'm correct, the title is very easily changed - just let me know.
Sincerely,

NRHP
editThank you for you continuing contributions. Just an FYI on National Register sites. I've done my share of photographing NRHP locations in Florida. I have run into no-longer-existent sites as you have. If you aren't aware, you can use Google Street View to check out most spots now. It wasn't too developed when I started my marathon photo roadtrips in 2007, but now pretty much the entire US is covered. Should you go on longer trips, it can be good to know ahead what is and isn't there. I also find myself revisiting favorite places I've been virtually. Saves money on gasoline, doncha know. Anyway, cheers, and have fun with the phototrippin'. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 14:29, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Van Ness House
editI came across this file that you uploaded. I found it because I'm looking at the media that has invalid syntax for the {{NRHP}} template. You put a note on it saying that it might be listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). I also can't find it listed, but I see a couple of things that might be confusing the issue:
- There is another "Van Ness House" in New Jersey that is on the NRHP. The English Wikipedia article about it is at en:Van Ness House (Fairfield, New Jersey). Could that be the house that the New Jersey commission was referring to?
- There is this "thing" where properties are found to be eligible for the NRHP, but they aren't necessarily added to the list. Could the commission have said that it had been found to be eligible, rather than actually listed?
In any case, because of these doubts, I am taking the NRHP info off of it. It can always be added back if we find the evidence.
I did find Category:Van Ness House, which is for a house in Pequannock Township, Morris County. The house in that category doesn't look like the house in your upload, though, so I am not putting it in there. It's reasonable to think that there were multiple people with the same surname in the area, and so there could be multiple houses called "Van Ness House". Still, take a look at the category to see if you think they might be the same. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 04:56, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Dates / Places
editThe Samuel Miner House you took a picture of was destroyed a decade ago. You snapped the Shuntock Brook bridge and Hewitt Farmhouse instead. Also this is not March 2008, this is early October 2014. That dam wasn't wrecked until 2010 by floods. Could you please fix the dates as well? Another one, the Hallville Mill seems to show pre-replacement of the front. Seen in the right of the picture. That was probably done in the last month or so. Also... I've been looking for the Ashland Mill Bridge which was moved in 1999 - did you managed to track it down and snap a photo of it? ChrisGualtieri (talk) 07:01, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

I don't know where you got the fact that it's from 1970. This picture is definitely not taken before October 1981, but I don't know what month or year this picture was taken. But before the window to the discovery room was added, but definitely not before October 1981. The Channel of Random (talk) 10:29, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- This photographer doesn't answer these messages, and I don't know whether he reads them. The rest of us pretty much have to figure what to do when questions arise. This would be a waste of time if the photos were not usually much better than the average Commons upload. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:52, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah I will say that this museum is now closed for renovation and I now own one thing that was in this picture and it is dated October 1981. So there's no way it's from 1970. The Channel of Random (talk) 05:06, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- So, you should edit the description as you decide is right. Like, say "allegedly" or something and maybe some details. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:19, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Also, David Skelly said this picture looks late 1980s or early 1990s. You could email the museum director David Skelly yourself if you don't believe me. [email protected] The Channel of Random (talk) 14:40, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
