editThis beautiful image here is uncategorized:
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
Also, it would be better if we can clean and rasterize this image.
- Hello image is now categorized, no problem with clean or rasterizing it. Jirka.h23 (talk) 19:06, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.
We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.
|
You can only upload fair-use-media on local Wikipedias, if permitted. Sorry, we can't have any fair-use on Commons. Thanks! Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:44, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
- This is not fair-use media, it is not a logo or cover, it is just photo of my t-shirt, so please revert it. Jirka.h23 (talk) 06:10, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

editThis media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Blanka mapa.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
:File:Blanka mapa.jpg ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)

Thank you for uploading some images!
Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

File:Kerch Strait incident map.jpg
editHi! I have a question regarding the description. It reads
3 - Ships position at 09:30 UTC (45.13803, 36.54362)
Could you specify the source for the time (09:30)? --Max Shakhray (talk) 15:04, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, it is sourced by ship-tracking website MarineTraffic, look at Bellingcat page, "aviona’ was at anchor in the Kerch Strait in effectively the same location for the entirety of November 25", zoom in their "Image 12: Interactive map", it is in north-east area: "Aviona Position at 09:30 UTC, Source: MarineTraffic". Does it help? Jirka.h23 (talk) 15:25, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Now I see, thanks! Would it be better to specify that this location actually refers to Aviona (not exactly to the Ukranian ships)? --Max Shakhray (talk) 15:45, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Well, it's a few hundred meters from the Ukrainian boat. But ok, for accuracy I have changed the caption in the image. Jirka.h23 (talk) 08:24, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

File:Perak Oko budoucnosti.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Western World Latin America torn countries.png
editThis file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Western World Latin America torn countries.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Sir Lothar (talk) 12:01, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Sir Lothar, this game is long time in status of freeware,123 therefore it can be uploaded here in the category "Free video games". Jirka.h23 (talk) 19:28, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- Freeware is not the same as "free license". There should be some proof that images from this game can be published on free license (for example Creative Commons, GNU General Public License etc.). See more at: Commons:Licensing. Thanks, Sir Lothar (talk) 15:14, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- Sir Lothar, this freeware is allowed to distribution outside of commercial channels, in this case, permission from the creator is not required. Should the permission be changed for example into this?: Fillets-ng_ru_blanka_fisho.png. Jirka.h23 (talk) 08:35, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
- As I wrote before, freeware is *not* the same as free license. To keep this file on Commons the copyright owner should send permission to release image under a Creative Commons license: Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator. Sir Lothar (talk) 10:08, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

- There are two problems with your upload:
- copyright: while most freeware licenses for software declare only that you do not need to pay in order to use the software (play the game), you need to prove here that this particular freeware license is CC-BY-SA-4.0-compatible, eg. that it allows any use (including arbitrary modifications and commercial reuse - and these needs to be declared explicitely in the original freeware license)
- authorship: you declared to be the original author of the image, which is doubtful. Authorship does not expire, cannot be transferred and CC-BY-SA licenses require to provide authorship info. If you are the author of the original image in the game, the information provided would be OK; but we need an evidence of your authorship. If you are not, you are violating Wikimedia Commons policies (prividing false or incorrect authorship info) and likely moral rights of the original author.
- And now, you have 7 days to fix those providing links to proper information in the public or through VRT, if non-public. Ankry (talk) 11:25, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
- Sir Lothar, I ask you again please, should the permission be changed for example into this?: Fillets-ng_ru_blanka_fisho.png, if it is the same case? Jirka.h23 (talk) 16:56, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ankry and Sir Lothar, I changed the Source and Permission information. Please let me know if this is insufficient. But it should be, if it is the same case as in other pictures. Jirka.h23 (talk) 17:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- (1) I do not think that CC-BY-SA is GNU GPL compatible; a screenshot of GNU GPL-licensed software would need to be also under GNU GPL, and (2) you would need to provide evidence tha the game is/was indeed under GNU GPL. Ankry (talk) 07:44, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ankry, where is the evidence for all these files? 1 or others in Free video games category? Jirka.h23 (talk) 07:49, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- In this case in the game source page in sourceforge. In case of GNU GPL the license is always available in the source code which is required to be available to all users (everybody distributing the program is required in the licensing conditions to provide its source code on a request). Ankry (talk) 08:06, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ok, I'm beginning to understand that now. Thank you both. Freeware is not the same as free license. It have to be GNU GPL or similar. So is it possible to upload screenshots of all of these games: List of open-source video games? Can I upload also CC BY-SA, MIT License and Public domain? Jirka.h23 (talk) 08:57, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Exactly. In fact, many of these games already have categories of their own, for example: Category:Battle for Wesnoth screenshots. Sir Lothar (talk) 14:17, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
