Triturus vulgaris female may not be

edit

Hi there. I'm pretty sure that the image of Triturus vulgaris female you uploaded is actually Triturus helveticus male. In English this is "palmate newt" because the hind feet are like palm trees. Male palmate newts also have spikes on the tip of their tales.

Great image though. 81.79.108.107 09:20, 15 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Dorcus parallelopipedus

edit

Hi Jeff, I'm not an expert, but I think Dorcus parallelopipedus is the scientific name of the beetle. This is what all literature from the local public library says and the name with o instead of i also has more hits on google (the latter is of course not really relevant). I put your images in the gallery there, too. Greetings, -- Schorsch 12:33, 6 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jeff, I had doubts in the determination of the above mentioned picture, so I asked in www.lepiforum.de. They came up with Erebia ligea, which I would say that is it too. Entomart photos

edit

You have uploaded hundreds of photos from Entomart, and the Wikipedia community appreciates that, seeing how widely they are used. Unfortunately the images are not free in the way required in Commons:Licensing, as the author requires a notification on use ("toute publication ou utilisation commerciale devra être simplement signalée" [1]). Earlier such images have been deleted. Any ideas on how to coordinate the removal and perhaps uploads to local projects if you get a Wikipedia-limited permission from the author? --Para 22:57, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I just posted on the help desk to ask someone to replace the old text with the new template. However, the usage notice on the source site doesn't seem to have changed. This is entirely ok, as long as the author has indeed agreed to the new license mentioned in Category_talk:Entomart. Some administrator will no doubt want to check that, so could you please ask him to send an email to [email protected] mentioning the attribution requirement and the following (from the french wikipedia):
 • La civilité et les coordonnées de l'auteur et le cas échéant de l'ayant droit ;
 • Une déclaration autorisant le texte ou media concerné à être librement copié et réutilisé, y compris à des fins commerciales ;
If the email exchange you have already had with him contains this information, you can instead just forward that to the same address. Thank you. --Para 06:50, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jeff, for changing these licenses, I suggest you contact another bot owner at Commons:Bots. Thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:52, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The community finally took a look at the template, and it seems we overlooked the last of the requirements above. Someone has put the template up for deletion. Could you check with the webmaster please? --Para 09:07, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Allo Jeff. Image deletion warning Image:Macroglossum stellatarum01.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading Image:Golden crowned fruit bat.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, Jeffdelonge!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Chaos diffluens.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Chaos diffluens.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Invalid license tag

edit

Hello Jeff, you uploaded the file File:Leptopterna dolabrata01.jpg to Commons with an Attribution license tag. Problem is, the site you took this image from clearly says "All the pictures are free for private and non-commercial use." Non-commercial images are not allowed on commons and do not correspond to an attribution license. Please be more careful in the future. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 20:50, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

hello Kaldari,
I suppose you refer to http://www.entomart.be/contact.html, so in french it is written Les photographies sont libres de tout droit...
Merci
That means that commercial use is valid, that picture need attribution, and that the author wish to be informed, but this is not a request. I know, this is a home-made free licence, it should be better that the author use standard cc-by-sa.
thanks Jeffdelonge (talk) 13:38, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Strange that their copyright notice in English seems to give conflicting information. A poor translation maybe? Kaldari (talk) 14:26, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are right, the english version of the licence is a poor translation. One year ago, i had mail exchanges with the author Claude Galand, Jeffdelonge (talk) 15:33, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid as long as the English version says "non-commercial", however, that's a red flag for Wikipedia use. Kaldari (talk) 15:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
I looked through the previous debates and also did an OTRS search. I'm surprised to see that this issue is still unresolved after 3 years. If the webmaster is unwilling to either change the licensing terms on the Entomart website or send a permissions email to [email protected], these images will all have to be deleted. Castelnau

edit

Hey, I just wanted to tell you I appreciate your Castelnau contributions a lot! Very good work with the extracted single-species images too.

I am currently (til next weekend or so) getting the species names of the fishes and birds up to date; they will look like this in the end. I have not added the numbers from the plate, because they're not always 1 - 2 - 3 and that can confuse readers, or they might think it is vandalism and change it back without looking at the image.

The identifications are mostly certain (80% via FishBase, which is rather good for an automated DB, rest mostly from Mikko Haaramo's list and Google Scholar). I have remarked where there is doubt. Some of his taxa are nomina dubia or inquirendae; in these cases this is also remarked (e.g. as "[Genus] sp.?").

Some (e.g. the Holacanthus) are weird. In this case it is probably juvenile on plate - the photos are adults. I have not remarked on these, since in these cases there are at least 2 images per species, somebody will notice it soon enough. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 22:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Faster than I thought. The fishes, birds, butterflies and crustaceans are all now identified. Enjoy! Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 07:15, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Please help replace this outdated license

edit

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

mise en forme des pages de description

edit

Salut,

Thanks for uploading File:Notonecta maculata01.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

- Zil (d) 22:49, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Biodiversity Photo - route

edit

Hello Mr Jeffdelonge, My name is Rita Neves. I work in Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, that is a Public Organism in Portugal. Actually, we are working on a road book of Biodiversity of Lisbon, for which we are going to produce a panel and a brochure. We found your photos on Wikimedia Commons and liked specially one of them very much, so we would like to know if you could allow us to use your photos, for free, to publish on this project, knowing that the brochure of will be for free distribution to everyone. The photo we are considering to use are the following:

Pipistrellus_pipistrellus01 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pipistrellus_pipistrellus01.jpg

The brochure will have four brackets. - Broochura a pocket to take the route - A brochure to present the day of inauguration

- Schedules for species identification
- Panels that will be fixed in the Land

As i said the Free Access will be everything :)

If you are the author and provide us that photo, we will refer your name in the bibliografy and we need to know what´s the name you want on the bibliography? Jeffdelonge? If it´s possible please respond to [email protected] or [email protected] or here on Wikimedia.

Thank you very much. Our best regards

Use of images in piranha family tree for National Geographic Television

edit

Mr. Delonge,

I am a tv producer with National Geographic Television and would like to use images/drawings of any piranha or pacu species you have for a tv program. I would like to use these images: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:F_de_Castelnau-poissonsPl38.jpg. Also, do you have more images of piranha and piranha relatives available? Would you be willing to sign our materials release? Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Best, Abigail Rodriguez

photo use in a book?

edit

Hello, bonjour, Jeff: May I submit your photograph of Houttuynia cordata (close-up) as seen on Wikipedia, to my publisher? I am the author of a book on invasive plants and weeds and this is one. Is use truly free of charge, as indicated on Wikipedia? What credit do you prefer? Thank you, merci. [email protected]

A barnstar for you!

  The Photographer's Barnstar
Hi Jeffdelonge!

My name is Edoardo Bit, I am an architect and also a “young researcher” of the University of Ferarra (Italy).

I am writing a book on the “green walls technologies” and I have found very interesting a photo in your Wikimedia Commons page. So, I would kindly ask you if I can use it in my book.

Obviously, if you gently decide to grant me the permission, your name (or your Wikimedia Commons nickname) and the link of the picture will be correctly cited in the credits of my publication.

The photo which I would use is: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bromeliaceae01.jpg

Thank you very much! I hope you will attend my request… My e-mail is: [email protected]

Bye, Edoardo

Renaming APGIII png ?

edit

Hi,

Shouldn't the 9 "Angiospermes_arbre*.png" files be renamed "APGIIIAngiospermes_arbre*.png", because there is no information about the version of APG they rely on ?

Regards

Sources for images

edit

Greetings Jeff: I notice that a LOT of your uploads are "missing source" when the actual source is contained in the description line of the uploads. Please take a few minutes to review your entire upload gallery and fix any missing source images. You can use the ones I changed today, including File:Anson-Gosse-1750-livre1.Jpg as a suggested guide to the finished appearance of the other files. "Missing source" is a big deal and can result in the images being deleted even though they are obviously old enough. Thank you for your help and your understanding that this is only a process not any judgement on your excellent history of uploading to Commons! Cheers! Ete au Conservatoire botanique

edit

Salut,

Thanks for uploading File:Bottle-tree(flowers).jpg.

Thank you.

File:Niki Karimi01.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
