Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:50, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Screenshot licensing
editHi, I've updated the screenshot license, to only keep the GPL license. The action of take this screenshot doesn't seem to be copyright eligible, as it's a trivial work, and furthermore, you can't relicense the screenshot content just taking it. --Dereckson (talk) 00:07, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Files you uploaded may be deleted
editThe files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commons wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. Geocoding tool
editWould it be possible to modify your geocoding tool to take a username and "all images newer than" date rather than a category? --Carnildo (talk) 21:39, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tool (and as a programmer, I certainly don't mind dates in the 20100105 format), but I'm experiencing three problems:
- If I specify "Carnildo" as the username and "20090101" (or any other date), the page times out while loading.
- If I specify "Carnildo" as the username, and don't specify a date, the page loads quickly, but gives images uploaded by User:Conversion script, starting with File:Blick über Funchal.jpg.
- For the image File:Blick über Funchal.jpg, the image isn't displayed on the page, and the page source contains <img src="" /> where the image should be.

Geocoding tool (2)
editHello,
I just discovered your tool: it sure can be very handy. Some issues I came across :
- I checked for names with accents, spaces... It breaks with Category:Église de la Trinité d'Angers (my guess is « ' ») and Category:Monuments historiques in Rennes (no guess). I'm trying with more, but it seems broken right now (I will try again later)
- If it finds nothing (user mistyped the category or tool fails, as above), there is no box to prompt for a new search. An error message along the lines of « Sorry, category does not exist » would be nice too.
I hope this helps :-) Jean-Fred (talk) 20:05, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

- The permission is from Mr. Rodrigue himself, which is fine for the second image, but we need the actual photographer's permission for the first image. Stifle (talk) 16:14, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

editHello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy to have your contributions automatically sighted. svgcheck
editHi Jarry, thanks for your very helpful svgcheck tool. I used the stable version on the oldest file version of File:Pravo-logo ca. 1995.svg and it showed no errors and displays it correctly. However, Commons did not. We guess it may be because the original uses CMYK (at least the author said it does). Can you include a check in your tool for this problem? Hope you have nice holidays! :) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:57, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hallo, I have lately found that CMYK is not the problem, but probably version of Adobe Illustrator, see File:PČR seal CMYK.svg. Regards, --Gumruch (talk) 10:08, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your messages and apologies for the delay. I have now looked at the issue again, and pinpointed the error - the use of custom entity references in the Doctype specification. Which is a stupid idea all around.
- I shall add it to svgcheck shortly. Regards, Jarry1250 (talk) 12:03, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
editDear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,

Copyright status: File:Map of Hoare-Laval Pact.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Map of Hoare-Laval Pact.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

editHi Jarry1250, I'm writing to you because your bot File Upload Bot (Jarry1250) (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information) is about to be de-flagged as a result of inactivity for a period longer than two years. If you'd like to keep that account flagged as a bot, please speak up at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 2#Discussion; otherwise, I'll remove the bot flag from that account in a month from now (10 May 2014). Thanks for your understanding, odder (talk) 13:25, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

editHello! Your bot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 4 as being inactive for over two years. Hello.
The files File:Standard time zones of the world.png and File:DEC31 World Time Zones.png which were last uploaded on 19 September 2016 and 19 October 2017 respecitvely and have not been updated since, need to be updated to reflect the latest changes as of November 2017, because both Sudan and Namibia have changed their time zone to UTC 2 on 1 November and on 8 August 2017 respectively (and Namibia also abolished DST), and Northern Cyprus reverted back to UTC 2 (and uses DST again) on 29 October 2017.
Thank you.

Monopolistically competitive market diagrams has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
