Please help translate
editHello Jan.Kamenicek, thanks for helping to translate the 2012 Picture of the Year contest. We still need help translating the contest interface and messages, along with reviewing existing translations. This page contains information about which pages need to be translated (please remember to take a look at all three tables on that page). Your help is really appreciated and helps make the premier competition on the world's largest collection of over 15 million freely licensed files possible.

Hi Jan, in relation to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Eager for education.jpg, I understand you wish for it to be deleted. Can I ask if this is because you are indentifiable in the image? darkweasel94 mentions that the door part of the image could be in scope, and looking at our categories we don't have any other images of this particular door on Commons; so I wanted to ask you if I were to Gaussian blur your face to make you unidentifiable, and change the description accordingly, would you be amenable to keeping the image on this basis? As an admin, I am willing to delete the image if you really wish for it to be deleted as an unused personal image, but at same time will try to make it possible for us to keep such images where they might be a useful purpose. The choice is yours, so please do let me know. Cheers, russavia (talk) 21:54, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
editHello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. editRound 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Historical images of Hradec Králové
Lepší nikdy nebude, alespoň do té doby, dokud tam nevzniknnou zájmové komunity lidí. Tím pádem by zanikl univerzální správce a vzniklo něco jako akreditace. Když by pak vyloženě otravoval člověk, jež akreditaci nemá, nebral by se jeho názor vážně. Poté by něco vzniklo, takhle se tam budete všichni jenom hádat. --Daniel Holý (talk) 15:30, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
- To je náhoda, o žádné předešlé diskusi o kategoriích tohoto typu nevím. Prostě mi přišlo užitečné oddělit kategorie "historie města", která může zahrnovat např. též současné fotografie různých historických artefaktů, od "historických fotografií". Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:11, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- It is just a coincidence, I do not know about any discussion on categories of that type. I have just found it useful to separate the category of the "history of the city", which can include e. g. current photographs of various historical artefacts, and the category "historical images".

- Thanks for fixing it. I tried using Commons Helper, but it did not work (I got a message about some "auth" problem which I did not understand). --Jan Kameníček (talk) 07:16, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your amendment. Yes, I do understand that Czechoslovakia may not be the right description for the (incorrectly presumed by me) territory but what is? If all the variations around the world are taken into account we will have an enormous number of country categories, or am I unnecessarily alarmed? The drawing represents a coach in a particular time but can we not tie it to a place, even to a place of authorship? I'd like to know that because it seems to have a distinctive style and I am writing about the history of coaches. Eddaido (talk) 22:02, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi. I do not think it should be tied to the place of the authorship of the Otto's Encyclopaedia from which the picture comes from. It would be best if it could be tied to the region where such coaches where really used, but as the article in the encyclopaedia does not say it, I am not able to say it either. I guess similar types were used in more countries across Europe, it seems quite similar e.g. to File:Rolka_Sztokholmska_6.JPG. If we are not able to tie it to a specific region, it would probably be best to leave it in the general category. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 23:33, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Overwrite request
editHi. I noticed that your file File:Úvaha posl. P. May I overwrite your file ? Those white borders caused the file not to be OCR-able.--Snaevar (talk) 21:13, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Postcards
editHallo Jan.Kamenicek you restore the Category:Historical undivided back postcards. I try to delete this category, because I think we don't need this category any more. When I first saw this category I don't understand what is the reason for this cat. After same research I create this structur:
So we can sort all images of postcard without problem. Also I don't like the word "historical" in the cat-name, because all postcards "historical". Did you agree that we can now delete the old "Category:Historical undivided back postcards"? Best regards -- sk (talk) 09:02, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Stefan Kühn: Hello. I think this category is useful, because Category:Backs of undivided back postcards and Category:Fronts of undivided back postcards (and possibly Category:Images of undivided back postcards with both sides of a postcard) need to be placed in one common category. It is not only a matter of front or back side, undivided back postcards are a type of postcard issued until the turn of the 19th and 20th century only, when they were replaced by divided back postcards (the exact time of the change may differ in various countries). These historical postcards need a special category.
- As for the word "historical": I understand your objection about this word, but if we omit it, people may start adding also some modern postcards which simply do not have divided back (I saw some modern postcards without divided back in the past), so I thought it better to add this word to avoid confusion. But if you think it is redundant, we can omit this word. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 12:15, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Some Introductory Historical Observations.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

very nice work
editI came here thinking that I would find nothing, but I was wrong! That featured photo is great and I only wanted to fix a few of the source images I saw.
I think you should help to point commons artists to ws, not hurt the attempts of others. There are lots of books and maybe some will transcribe also.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 19:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! Regardless of the recent controversy, I generally also value your work very high. As for the rest, I have answered at my talk page at Wikisource. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 21:29, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
Welcome, Dear Filemover!
edit
Hi Jan.Kamenicek, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

At the bottom of the ballot is the type of logo of the Koruna Česká, the ballot is published both on the party's website and on its official Facebook (mentioned above). The file can be said to be identical to this file, only the data has been overwritten. Have a nice evening. Tschechische Länder (talk) 21:08, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
editRead this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Warning
editHi Jan.Kamenicek. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request: omitting reasons on each file description page. Here, {{Delete}} is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the {{Delete}} template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar provided by the AjaxQuickDelete gadget per COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people. Warning: such edits are not tolerated and have led to account blocks, as "We cannot work here with people who are not willing to follow our procedures, in particular for deletion requests." — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:34, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: Oh, that is extraordinarily annoying what you have just written. I think that it is quite clear that all the edits mentioned were done in good faith. I omitted the reasons because it seemed superfluous to me as there was a link included that led to the subpage containing the reasons. I admit that it was a mistake and I should repeat the reasons there, but there was no bad faith in it and giving me such a "warning" and threatening me with blocks for a mistake is just upsetting. And your insinuation about me not being willing to follow our procedures is just completely beside the point. Please, next time think twice before wording your messages. Thanks for understanding. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 09:53, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way. For years, I have been railing against incomplete deletion requests, which are caused by malformed use of {{Delete}} templates and lack of follow-through, and which are populating subcats of Category:Incomplete deletion requests, in your case subcat Category:Incomplete deletion requests - missing reason. This problem spurred the creation of that category 17:57, 1 February 2007 (UTC), over 17 years ago, and my tracking of it 18:16, 14 November 2020 (UTC), four years ago. As precedents, ColorfulSmoke was blocked 17:07, 29 December 2020 (UTC) by Mdaniels5757 with an expiration time of 3 days (account creation blocked) for "Continuing to make malformed deletion requests despite repeated instructions; not responding to concerns on talk page", pursuant to the discussion archived at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections/Archive 29#ColorfulSmoke and was ultimately blocked indefinitely, and Alex Neman was blocked 16:30, 27 January 2023 (UTC) by Yann with an expiration time of 1 month (account creation blocked) for "Continuing to make malformed deletion requests despite repeated instructions; not responding to concerns on talk page" pursuant to the discussion archived at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections/Archive 34#Alex Neman, Mommy Debby was blocked 20:54, 14 November 2024 (UTC) by Jmabel for "Vandalism: repeated incomplete deletion requests. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems&oldid=957080538#Mommy_Debby", so blockage is a very real possibility. I don't issue the blocks, the ones that do are Admins. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:10, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: Yes, I do feel offended. I contribute to several wiki projects and each of them has different rules. It is quite common that some projects, such as en.ws, just link to the deletion discussion where everything is explained. I cannot agree with your attitude that after first mistake (and after really many contributions here), when I did not realize that the rules are different here, you threatened me with blocking my account. And now, to make it worse, you keep offending me by comparing me with some cases of permanent and deliberate abuse. I do not think I need to read anything more of you. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 17:53, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
