Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

editI've moved StAUCC to User:Jamesmcmahon0/StAUCC because it's not a collection of images, which is a requirement for galleries. INeverCry (talk) 16:52, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Update: Moved to Commons:Flickr batch uploading/StAUCC. INeverCry 04:50, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
I note your comment on the subject page that STAUCC has put all its images into the public domain.
I question that for two reasons:
First, STAUCC is unlikely to actually own the copyright to any images. Such ownership would require a formal, written, transfer of rights from the photographers. I'd be surprised if a university club and its members bothered to do this. Without such a formal transfer, the copyrights lie with the photographers and the club has no right to license them.
Second, at least one of the images on Flickr is licensed CC-BY-ND, which is not PD and is not an acceptable license for Commons -- we require that derivative works be allowed, so that the acceptable CC licenses are CC-0, CC-BY, and CC-BY-SA. ND and NC are not permitted here.
If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week.

Spelling fixes
editCheers for initiating the correcting of my spelling of "museum" in all the file names from the West Midlands Police Museum. One day I will learn to spell! Thryduulf (talk) 11:54, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:View from St Salvator's Tower.jpg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:View from St Salvator's Tower.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
editYou are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Jamesmcmahon0,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:41, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Eight days into Wiki Loves Monuments
editThank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
Thank you for submitting your photos to the competition, it really helps improve our coverage of historic sites. Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia - though it may take a while for the monuments map to catch up so don't be disheartened if some pins haven't turned blue yet.
WLM runs until the end of the month, so please add more and invite other people to take part. We are within touching distance of 1,000 photos for the UK, putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message here or contact me directly at [email protected]. |
An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK
editThank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?
Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)} September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!editHi You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations. You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019. Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC) Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!editHi Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations. Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first). We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website. The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December. Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here. Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC) Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019! Please help with this survey.edit
