Zoo Negara

edit

You have recently deleted a number of photos that are in the Zoo Negara article based on copyvio. I have spotted an additional photo by the same user that appears to be the same as a photo on the Web site "Tapir ZOO NEGARA.jpg". I would note a couple of things. First, based on text added by user Haiqal08, I'm guessing (yes, just a guess) that he/she is a zoo employee. It's entirely possible that this photo is from this user (which is the claim on the photo page), and just appears elsewhere as well. I don't see any copyright information on the zoo site (which does not mean it's not there). Second, if we already have 5 or 6 copyright violations from this user, doesn't that make the rest of his/her uploads (most of the images in the Zoo Negara article) suspicious? I have poked through the zoo web site (though not every page), but have only found the one other obvious match. Sorry, I'm new to this. Any advice is appreciated. Donlammers (talk) 14:04, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes - odd one. 1 was tagged as a copyvio so I thought I would take a look at the rest. One had a website & copyright notice on (not the zoo's) and another was had a name on (not the zoo's or anything like the user's), some are composites which would mean that they are either derivatives or copyvios and almost certainly not "own work". Throw in the fact that 3 I have left are from different cameras - possible but unusual - and I think probably all are suspect.
However it would be great if they were a zoo employee as then zoo could then licensed them via COM:OTRS and we could then host them. Hope that helps - thanks for your interest. --Herby talk thyme 14:39, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cover of Germany & Middle East.jpg

edit

Hi Herby, recently you deleted File:Cover of Germany & Middle East.jpg. In accordance with Commons:OTRS I had sent an email containing details of the permission for this file and marked the file with {{OTRS pending}}. Also en:File:Cover of Germany & Middle East.jpg has this information. Today I've uploaded the file again and I've send another E-Mail with the permission given by the copyright holder in accordance with Commons:OTRS. Best, --ThT (talk) 12:02, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough - I'll not delete it again. I did wonder but with over a month of OTRS pending it looked like (one of the many) not actually done ones. Apologies & regards --Herby talk thyme 12:20, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:1.26 Denver Biennial Sculpture.jpeg

edit

Can Commons keep this image or is this a sculpture in the US which violates US COM:FOP laws? I really cannot tell from the angle. I notice this discussion has caused some problems to Geagea's RfA too. Its a pity it is not is Canada where we have full FOP but such is life. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:56, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sadly I am not an FOP specialist, my knowledge in that is very limited - you would be better trying others more experienced than me. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:51, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please mark as patrolled

edit

Hi Herbythyme,
Thank you for helping fight vandalism on Commons. However, I would like to ask you to mark the bad edit as patrolled (see also COM:EDITPATROL). The will remove the edit from the unpatrolled edits queue and reduce our backlog, and thus prevents double work. See also Commons:Counter Vandalism Unit. Thanks again. –Krinkletalk 22:29, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Meaningless postings on user talk pages

edit

Hi! There are some more or less completly meaningless postings on User_talk:Rockman. Either you elaborate on whats the problem or you should remove your postings. It seems to me that you post a lot of such on user pages, it would be wise to use such templates only when there are real resons for using them. Thanks for your understanding and actions. Jeblad (talk) 13:33, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

We will have to agree to differ there. The out of scope template is a standard one that informs people of the project scope. I only use them when someone creates an out of scope page. No idea what is "meaningless" about that. You obviously lack some knowledge about Commons - may take a look around a bit - I patrol new pages and so come across material that warrants such postings quite frequently. It can always be archived by the user. I've been using it for about 4 years now... --Herby talk thyme 14:26, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I always loves it when someone uses arguments that other users lacks knowledge… Yeah, I only had user accounts on wikimedia-projects since 2005 so sure it is something I don't know. Jeblad (talk) 15:05, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Then you should know better than to object when someone points out to a new user that they are creating pages that are outside the scope of the project advertising their music site and nothing else or don't you do such things on no wp. Standard multi lingual template is the only sensible way to deal with such things on Commons. For the sake of completeness the page is here for admins tho the title will be rather more than a clue. --Herby talk thyme 15:14, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
FYI: meaningless postings are postings which do not tell the user what he has done wrong. On the templates you posted, the user cannot see which images are out of scope, or in this particular case, that you dislike the fact that the user promotes his own website. Do you have any idea how this user should have any clue about what you could probably mean by just adding templates without explaining anything? I deleted at least one of the templates and will delete the other as well. BR Brimz (talk) 15:36, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It was the only edit they had made.... A page promoting a website and nothing else is clearly well outside the scope of this project. Feel free to delete whatever you like but if you and the other user who has taken such an interest actually think it is wrong then post on a community page so that a real discussion takes place over the use of this template. Based on you comments I imagine you would object to some of the others we use too. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:39, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I judge on what I see, and that is a user who adds good music pictures with appropriate licenses to Commons. So it's not the template as such, but the way you use it. If you should use such a template, why not tell the reason? Why let a new user guess what the reason is why he gets a template on his TP? If you look at his contributions, you'll see nice pictures, we'll definately need on the WP-projects. So why scare this newbie off with these templates? BR Brimz (talk) 15:48, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
You and anyone else looking need to look carefully at the timings. First edit - mainspace page advertising website only (that happens very often indeed) - nothing else, clearly out of scope, deleted, user notified. 2nd edit - a link to their website on their user page, equally out of scope, deleted, user notified. Then we get some actual contribution of images (& the user page is recreated). I did not then delete the user page again, place templates or anything else.
Had the first edit not been the advert for the website then none of this would have happened but placed in mainspace as it was it was going to get deleted pretty quickly by someone. The user (after getting the info on the template) seems to understand the scope of the project so, to me, it worked. But you are welcome to your opinions. If you have more on the use of templates please take it to the community - I am a volunteer here and following policies that have been here for a long time. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:06, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
A quick glance shows 10 mainspace "out of scope" deletions today (mine). That is pretty average. --Herby talk thyme 16:09, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Had the response not been only a template, but communication with the new user, I might have agreed with you. The template states that something's wrong according to someone, but not what the problem is. It's too general. You probably could have said more by writing two sentences instead of giving an automated reply, and it would have taken the same amount of time. If the user (as you state) understands the scope of the project - why on earth has then a norwegian moderator set up his userpage with the comment "(personal info, please don't delete)"? Could the success be more tied to support from another wiki where commons' incommunicative templates failed? KEN is also a volunteer, as I am and as Rockman, Brimz, Jeblad and the rest are. It does not relieve us from trying to communicate with the newbies in a fashion they can understand. If anything, this makes me just more sceptical of promoting sharing images through Commons. BR Noorse (talk) 18:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

So - where is the off wiki communication about this? It is obvious there is some somewhere. I don't recall the last time three quite different users asked me about the same issue here (ever).

  1. If you have an issue with the template - take it to the community not me - I didn't design the template - I use it.
  2. Who is the norwegian moderator? There is no no connection shown here (I check that generally)
  3. Once the message personal info, please don't delete was placed with some real contribution to the project I did not delete/template anything. The previous edits (particularly the mainspace one) were entirely promotional, nothing more, nothing less.

Again - if you have issues with the template then bring it up with the community not me. If you have been asked to post here as seems very likely then I've nothing else to say. I will continue to delete out of scope pages and use the best communication possible to inform users - multi lingual templates. --Herby talk thyme 21:22, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

By the way - who is "KEN" - are they someone who is due to turn up on my page - nothing fits otherwise? --Herby talk thyme 21:23, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Aha - I see KEN is a long term sysop on no wp. Frankly the creation of the first mainspace page amazes me. On en wp for example the user would have been blocked for their username alone. --Herby talk thyme 21:36, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I came here after a question about handling with newbies on another project, so not so quite offwiki as you think it was. As I said, my problem is not the template. The template can be very helpful when used in the right way. On Template:Project_scope is also given the possibility to leave a message with a link: {{subst:project scope|File:File Name}}. Why not use this feature? I think it's unfair against you as a volunteer that I tell the community that you're using the template in a wrong way. That's why I come to your TP to discuss that with you and not with the community. I hope you'll understand my reason.
I think you're doing a good job, but like everywhere else, anything can be done better. The link feature in the template is a thing that helps communicating better with users, especially new users. So please, use it. I understand that we have to be very careful with people abusing commons for their own good, but on the other hand, a newbie does not always know what rules are and how things work. I thought assuming good faith was one of the core beliefs of Wikipedia? A little more patience and a helping hand has a lot more value than adding templates. At least, that's what I've learned in the past 5 years that I've been working on the Wiki-projects.
For me the discussion ends here. Keep up the good work and think wise. BR Brimz (talk) 08:55, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Summary

edit

As much for my benefit, others who may be watching or future use I'm going to summarize this incident.

At 13:50 on 19 July Rockman (talk · contributions (views) · deleted user contributions · recent activity (talk · project · deletion requests) · logs · block log · global contribs · CentralAuth) created a page in gallery mainspace promoting their music website. Their only other edit very shortly before this was a user page with the promotional link on. There were no other contributions to Commons now was there an SUL account. As I was patrolling new pages I deleted the mainspace one and warned the user via the multilingual template in use here since 2006. I then found the user page which, with no other contributions appeared similarly promotional and deleted that.

At 17.07 the user page was recreated shortly after a single image was uploaded. Assuming good faith I left it for the time.

I followed Commons policy and practice throughout this and did what I have been doing here for quite some time.

I then find that a number of other users have become interested in the issue complaining about my actions and templating presumably directed here from elsewhere. So I re-iterate - I followed Commons policy in deleting material clearly promotional and out of scope (& not a gallery). I used the best method available to communicate - a multi lingual template. I would do exactly the same again if it happen.

As such I will not respond to any further postings here but would advise anyone who sees this as wrong (my actions or Commons use of multi lingual templates to communicate) to take this to the community for review. I can't help feeling had I created a page solely promoting my website on any wiki including no wp it would have been deleted quickly. --Herby talk thyme 08:40, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Frankly, your unwillingness to discuss your actions amazes me. As to the issue, Rockman introduced himself before uploading images from his site. He requested some patience - "bare with me". I think that was wise - otherwise he might have been bombarded with no-permission templates, threats of blocks, and all that. But you could not resist biting the newby. And you think that I must be blocked when I make DRs of admin contributions. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 08:54, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Read the timescale Kuiper - it did not happen that way round. And it strikes me I am discussing my actions here. --Herby talk thyme 09:01, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

my user page you just delted

edit

you misunderstood my intention. The links i put on my user page were links to photos that i was going to upload to commons. If you can restore it, put them on my talk page, then delete the page again, so i can store them on my main wikipedia account i would appreciate it.Дунгане (talk) 17:36, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is a page with an awful lot of links on - why are they all needed? I'll happily do something but it would be good to know why? Thanks --Herby talk thyme 21:14, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually i originally meant to put them on my wikipedia page- i was saving the links so i could upload images from them to comons, and other links were meant to be used as references in articles i was making.
I guess i can save the links in my email, i just need them temporarily restored on the user page so i can retrieve them.Дунгане (talk) 21:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I need the links now, i was going to use them for references and sources to edit articles on wikipedia, and upload images to commons, but now I'm stalled because you deleted the page. I would like for all the links to be put on my talk page at wikipedia here [1]. If you took a look at the links you would see that they are either urls of books on Google books, or links to images, because i was going to use them in citations and uploading images. Дунгане (talk) 00:27, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorted now I think - apologies. --Herby talk thyme 08:25, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Flickr review

edit

Dear Admin Herby,

I suppose you have seen my note here on the bot. Why doesn't anyone act? Abigor could mark 100 images a day but he quit his Adminship. I marked 20-30 images in the past 24 hours but it seems no one else has acted. Why is that?

Secondly, is there no backup plan to have someone else fix the flickr review bot aside from Bryan? In my view, it may not be wise to rely on a single person to run such an important function because he may be away or ill. People do become sick or quit Commons--just look at Abigor. And then the flickr backlog just grows while the uploaders from flickr become angry and complain to us Admins/trusted users in frustration sadly. Thank You for your time, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:49, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I see Bryan does run the bot but he has not been truly active for well over a year now. I have no idea about bot coding type work so you would be better seeking someone who actually runs a toolserver based bot who might have an idea what to do about it.
As far as getting other to help it is a sad fact that while commons has an awful lot of admins most of them do sod all :( There are only so many hours in a day and most of the active admin have areas they tend to deal with and the work there tends to keep them fairly busy. The post on the admin board is good but if no one does anything that is bad - I'll give some thought to it but I'm not sure how much I can help. Regards --Herby talk thyme 10:21, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • That is what I was afraid of sadly. There is no one to replace Bryan if he is away or quit Commons. MGA73 has his own bot but its not the same thing. Thanks for the reply, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:20, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Update: MGA73 told me on his talkpage regarding Bryan that: "[I] talked to him yesterday.Broken database server on the toolserver. He is trying to import a new one." It has finally worked as the bot marked all the flickr images at nighttime--if you are in Europe and at 11: 15 AM if you are in Canada like me. So, its nice to know that Bryan is still around. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:35, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
That is good news - many thanks for your help on this matter. Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:05, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • No problem sir. The next time there's a bot problem, directly E-mailing Bryan is the best way to go. Unfortunately, I don't know him and I'm not an Admin unlike you or MGA73. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:15, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Anyone who has registered an email address can mail another user who has one - not an admin thing at all. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:20, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Missing edits

edit

There were four or five edits that I made on Administrators' noticeboard/User problems in the section "6.3 Pieter's defense", that are now all missing. I have no idea of how that happened. Since you have been involved in the discussion, I thought that perhaps you would understand what happened to those edits. An explanation would be much appreciated. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 13:35, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I see an edit of yours here. I see nothing suggesting it has been removed.
I imagine that your edits might have actually been made on Kuiper's talk page as the section has been transcluded. You are welcome to go and look there and work out what has happened for yourself. I have no idea what explanation you were looking for. I see no reason why you will need to contact me again. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:12, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, they were on Kuiper's talk page, although the edits were made on the noticeboard. I don't understand how the process of transcluded pages works. Book cover deleted by your good self

Hi. You decided to delete an image I have uploaded; it's an image of a scan I made of a Welsh sci-fi novel published in December 1976, detail of which lie [here]. I thought that the front cover of UK books can be used freely to inform readers of their existence, but I'm sure you know better. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 06:35, 1 August 2010 (UTC) (Admin at Cy)Reply

I'm afraid book covers are copyright violations unless the publisher explicitly releases them. They own the copyright and the book is not old enough for the copyright to have expired I think. Sorry about that. Upload it on cy if you allow fair use there? Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:16, 1 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello! You ended up blocking me because I kept on trying to upload pictures that I own the rights to. I understand you're doing your job, but I was wondering if you could help me out and give me instructions, or direct me to the right place where I can upload pictures and not have them be deleted. I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance :)

The fact that you ignored the messages placed for you did not help your position so please read things a little more thoroughly in future at least.
The images you uploaded are so clearly not the original image that it is not surprising that I (& other admins) deleted them. If they are yours then the only way they can be hosted here is with confirmation via COM:OTRS. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:05, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of Image

edit

Hello there, do you mind telling me why you deleted my image from Wikimedia Commons? [2] I took the photo, own all the rights to it, and released it into the public domain. Editor182 (talk) 13:29, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sure - you may have taken the photo but you do not own the art work concerned. That is owned by the drinks company. Sorry about that. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:51, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

If the item is on my property, I can legally take a photo of it and own the copyright to that photo. The item doesn't even have to be on my property either, as long as it's in any location where photography is permitted. There are plenty of photos of brand name products on Wikimedia Commons.. Here's a photo of Coke brand bottles: [3] Here's a photo of brand name medicine: [4] - Are you going to delete these too? I can find you plenty more.. Not true in many cases. The fact that you can take a photo of it does not mean you are the legal copyright holder of the image and able to freely license it. There are a massive stack of such photos uploaded here and all deleted. However doing the good faith bit I've undeleted it and we will see what others make of it. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:15, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

No worries, thanks. It would prove impossible for us to illustrate many articles on Wikipedia if we couldn't take photos of such products. Editor182 (talk) 14:25, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It will almost certainly be deleted I'm afraid. --Herby talk thyme 14:26, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

This is so unusual. I've had disputes on Wikipedia with the inclusion of administrators and established users about which brand-name photos we could use (in terms of image quality), and then we'd come to a decision about which were in the best interest of the article. All articles which display images of brand name products from beverage companies and pharmaceutical companies are in violation of copyright? That would be a mass loss to the quality of many, many articles that I'm aware of. I'm sure it's okay, but we'll see how it goes .. Editor182 (talk) 14:40, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Some stupid clown came in and wiped out all my images. I'm not uploading images to Commons anymore. Un-fucking believable. Editor182 (talk) 14:56, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tell that retard to wipe out the other 2 photos I linked up there. Then if he likes, I can bring in another 1 million copyright violation images that nobody ever noticed on Wikipedia for the past few fucking years... Don't tell me you clowns can delete images on Wikipedia too? I hope not. Bye bye. Editor182 (talk) 15:00, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I did suggest that would be the case. On Wikipedia some images may be used under "fair use" license. You might be able to upload them there. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:02, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please look at User_talk:Abigor#No_Personal_Attacks_please? also, and I do not like your tone... Huib talk Abigor @ meta 15:17, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
