Hi Eric,

I saw your picture in the unidentified plants category ... It's a Datura, but I don't know exactly which species. Most probably it's Datura stramonium, but they are all very similar. --Carstor 12:33, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Carstor- That looks like it--thanks a million! Do you mind a little English Einrichtung regarding your discussion page? At the top, the second part should read: "...you'll find the answers here as well." Alternatively, you could just change it to: "I will respond here to posts made here." --Eric
Thanks for the correction ... but "Einrichtung" isn't the correct german word as well, I guess you meant "Berichtigung" or "Verbesserung". :-) All the best, --Carstor 14:39, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I had a feeling that wasn't right--my German is rusty! There's a good word I wanted to use in English--tweak--for which LEO gives "zwicken," but I wasn't sure about that either. --Eric my en:wp talk page 15:38, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: rename question

edit

Hi Eric,

In the end, I uploaded the right one with a slightly different name, and requested deletion for the bad one - that's exactly what should happen. :) The trick is to upload the image with the better name first, then request the bad-name one for deletion (using {{Bad name}}). This is because we would rather have a badly named image than no image at all, so if you don't upload the correctly named one first, the old one might not be deleted.

{{Rename}} represents a request for someone else to do the re-uploading, it doesn't actually mean the image will be renamed unless someone volunteers to do it. So for your own images you should definitely do the housekeeping yourself. :P

hope this helps, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:02, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

File:Remi Clovis Reims.jpg

edit

Hi Eric, I've seen you've reverted my edit on the categories and I disagree. Let me explain: I changed it from Category:Saint Remigius churches to Category:Saint Remigius because I understood that the stone is in the Cathedral of Reims, which is dedicated to St. Mary, so it isn't in a church or a chapel dedicated to St. Remigius. Also, I put it in Category:Baptism of Clovis I since it is related to this event. Thanks. --Cruccone (talk) 17:16, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ciao Cruccone- Ah, I get it now. Thought the churches cat was just an awkwardly named one for churches having to do with Remi. Once again I find myself wishing definitions were required for categories--then I wouldn't have mis-categorized it in the first place...and I completely missed the Clovis cat you put there--sorry! I reverted my revert. Grazie! --Eric my en.wp talk page 17:58, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's all right, to be honest there are times I'm not really sure I'm putting the right categories, I just try to put a bit of order in the mess, but there's so much stuff to do! Ciao! --Cruccone (talk) 18:56, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category:Clay

edit

Dear Eric, before you "boldly" revert other people's edits, I suggest that you educate yourself regarding the basics of Wikipedia and Wikidata. By reverting my edit you have created a Wikidata conflict. What I did was very simple: Category:Clay on Commons is linked to Wikidata Category:Clay, the page Clay (a page off the Category:Clay) is associated with Wikidata:Clay — with all of its associated interwiki links. If you dont' understand this, please take a bit of time researching and understanding this before you blindly assume that you know better than someone else who has been editing for a while. All of those interwiki links which you tried to reinstate were already duplicated in Wikidata:Clay. Very trivial (talk) 11:43, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear @Very_trivial: Use edit summaries and you'll look more like someone who's been editing for a while. When I did not understand the reason for your edit, I erred on the side of blindly assuming that anyone who can't be bothered to leave an edit summary was wasting other editors' time here. So thanks for the education, and for not sniveling defensively when your unexplained edits are reverted. --Eric my en.wp talk page 13:57, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 04:50, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Philip II and Hugh de Boves at Battle of Bouvines.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Image of (allegedly) Franz Strasser being executed

edit

Hi Eric,

it's just today that I happened to see your question on File talk: Karl Morgenschweis prays for condemned prisoner.jpg "whether I had any more info." In fact, I have. In a book I own (data see below) there is a portrait photo of Strasser on p. 49 and another one of his standing under the gallows beam on p. 50. On p. 50, his narrow face and short Austrian-style jacket are unmistakable, and one can also see that the railing is unpainted and that his MP guard is not wearing battle dress but a knee-long parka. Also, on http://traugottvitz.simplesite.com/437263933 you'll see a photo of Strasser being led to the gallows. Again, his face, hairstyle and jacket are unmistakable while the gallows in the background features the unpainted handrail and the missing braces, and you see clearly the snow on the rooftop and the parkas of the guards.

The book I'm referring to is Heinrich Pflanz, Der Spöttinger Friedhof in Landsberg am Lech, St. Ottilien 2004. The book is to be read with the utmost caution. I suspect the author to be one of those right-wing nitwits who maintain that the men executed at Landsberg were for the most part victims of heavily flawed victors' justice. But if the book uses photos sourced as "NAW" for "National Archives Washington" (as is the case here) you may trust these photos, I think...

I think I am meanwhile an expert on airmen lynching murders in WW2 such as the ones that Strasser was convicted of. Well, that's "original research" in Wikipedia-speak and doesn't count. But on the other hand there's hardly a publisher out there who would consider printing my research for one moment, don't you agree?

Best wishes, --Kauko (talk) 09:38, 21 July 2020 (UTC)KaukoReply

Hallo Kauko- Thanks for writing, that's good info. As you probably noticed, I got the file renamed shortly after I posted, so it's good that you brought this up back then.
So shouldn't we remove or change the photo in this article section?: de:Fliegermorde#Fliegerprozesse. I'm going to look over the other article where that photo was used to see if the captions mention Strasser. Eric talk 15:36, 21 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hallo Eric - I don't think the photo should be removed from de:Fliegermorde#Fliegerprozesse; it's just the caption which is wrong. I must confess I have no idea who might be the individual depicted in the photo in question; I'd say it must be one of these three: Anton Schosser ( 24.01.46), Nikolaus Fachinger or Heinrich Flauaus (both 01.04.46). A CORRECT caption in the case of de:Fliegermorde#Fliegerprozesse would be "Galgen im Gefängnishof von Landsberg am Lech, 1946. Hier wurden die meisten Täter hingerichtet, die wegen eines Fliegermordes verurteilt waren." --Kauko (talk) 08:49, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Klingt gut, Kauko, danke! I cruised the wikis where I could at least partially understand the language and nixed several other instances of Strasser's name in captions for that photo. Eric talk 11:26, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Changing redirect target for Template:Vn (Special:Diff/617390172)

edit

In Special:Diff/617390172, you changed the redirect target for {{Vn}} from {{Neutral}} to {{VN}}, with this edit summary:

point redirect to what I'm sure is a much better target; apologies if I'm missing something

It seems that you did miss something: hundreds of existing discussions that rely on {{Vn}} redirecting to {{Neutral}}. This isn’t the sort of mistake I expect someone to make after being here for about 7 years. What am I missing? Brianjd (talk) 14:03, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Right, 357 transclusions currently, and consistent with {{Vs}}, {{Vo}}, {{Vk}}, {{Vd}}, and 14 years of standard practice.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:19, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Brianjd and Jeff G.: - If you two think I got it wrong, by all means change it back. I don't remember exactly what prompted me to make the change, but it must have come out of something I ran into while making edits related to Mimus pologlottos that day and the day before (see Special:Contributions/Eric).
Brian, I'm not sure what you mean with the comment about the mistake and the seven years (I've been here much longer). If you guys are right and I was in error making the change, then there is obviously something about templates and template redirects that you understand better than I, and it's good that you discovered the issue. I would add that since it is almost ten months since the edit, whatever I broke seems not to have wreaked a lot of havoc, else it would likely have been noticed earlier. Eric talk 09:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done in Special:Diff/697660307. Thank you both for your 34 years of service combined.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:25, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, some pages also relied on {{Vn}} redirecting to {{VN}}. I have checked all non-discussion pages and made the appropriate fixes. Interestingly, many pages used {{Vn}} when they should have used {{Vi}}. Brianjd (talk) 13:26, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you have been here much longer than 7 years (about as long as me, in fact); I don’t know where I got that from. But that makes this error all the more surprising. Perhaps the template system is more confusing than it should be?
I looked at your contributions around the time of this edit; these contributions suggest that you do have a good understanding of how things work here, and the contributions both before and after this edit use {{VN}} directly, without going through the redirect. I still have no idea how this error occurred. I guess I will need to write it off as a freak event.
Of course, using {{VN}} in place of {{Neutral}} doesn’t break the page as a whole, and pales in comparison to all the other broken code that keeps popping up on DR pages. That’s probably why no one did anything about it until now. Brianjd (talk) 12:38, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
You can "write it off" however you want. I was trying to make an improvement. Apparently (to me), obviously (to everyone else) I made a mistake because I misunderstood something. It has now been fixed. Eric talk 22:01, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
