Files with special characters to upload : Chineses
editWorks fine for me: Image:Test-永.png. May be a problem with your browser and/or file system. -- Duesentrieb 17:01, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- putting non ascii characters in filenames is probablly a bad idea anyway. There are some issues with using images with such names in the latin1 wikipedias and also the latin alphabet is what most people on the internet are familiar with. Plugwash 21:33, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- I was told by the developers that we should use such filenames and that we should report all problems with them imidiately. The en:wp will be converted to UTF-8 wehn we switch to 1.5 - until then filenames wIth special characters have to be written with HTML-escapes there. -- Duesentrieb 22:17, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- Ok Yug 07:58, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- Can you say more about what you were using for your test (Linux ? Mozilla firefox ? ...). I'm not programmer but I try to understand why my uploads My PC => Common continue to don't work fine with name like 火.png, and even test-火.png . Yug 07:58, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- I use Firefox, Explorer and Windows : this doesn't work fine. You use Firefox, Konqueror, and Linux : this work fine. So I think it's Explorer~windows. I will test and look a little everywhere to know more. Bye Yug 17:56, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- this is a dump of the raw data going between my computer and the commons server as I uploaded Image:永.jpeg (which had the name of 永.jpeg on my filesystem), hope it helps. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 18:16, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
- I notice something...
- I was writting chinese in a .txt file, on my computer. When I want save it, a "problem-windows" open and say (translate from french):
- This file contain some characters on UNICODE format (my some chinese words) which will be lose if you save as a txt file on ANSI format.
- To keep Unicode's information, clic on sur cancel, then select one of the Unicode's options in the Encodage liste.
- If I don't care, my 中心 -> Close the txt file and open again -> ??
- So I everytime clic on "cancel" and then select "UFT-8" to keep the chinese form " 中國 -> 中國 "
- SO !... I think that's means than my Windows or Explorer is not on UFT-8. right ? wronght ? I'm trying to find where -in windows- I can see that~
- PS : I work on windows because my linux haven't chinese, so don't laugh of me and windows... :) Yug 14:08, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- What Windows do you have (ME/2000/XP/...)? => Windows XP profesionnal gold v5.5
- What Filesystem are you using (NTFS/FAT32/...)? => FAT32
what "Explorer" ? => Windows Explorerno in link with the trouble.- What internet explorer ? Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3
Also, keep in mind that the encoding of the content of a file has nothing to do with the encoding of the name of the file. The problem with the .txt files was probably related to the content.
Try saving a file on your system with characters not present in any chines encoding, like for instance hebrew characters. If that works, the file system is using unicode and should be OK, I think. -- Duesentrieb 14:22, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- HEBREW : inside a .txt file I have the same problem, so I save under UTF-8/
- I had renamed a file " test-ק-red-trans.png ". On my computer that's ok.
- When I upload to commons I have the same trouble than in chinese (see the way 3 ).
- Exactly the 3 same things with " العربية " (arabian).
- Exactly the 3 same things with " ภาษาไทย " (Thai).
=> [email protected] (MSN) if you see a solution.... Yug 16:40, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
that's my Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3 (which doesn' t work well with ... other soft ? FAT32 ? one mistake of me ?).
Using Internet Explorer, I just upload the file Image:test-ภาษาไทย-red-trans.png without any difficulty.

- Some user of Firefox meet a trouble with special character, like chinese, hebrew, arabian, Thai and probably more. The case is on www.commons.wikimedia.org , when user try to Upload a file to www.commons.wikimedi.org . One wikipedian have asked a few people to try this out, and here are the results:
- So, this seems to be a bug in Firefox: it handles files from a FAT partition incorrectly under windows. Please report this bug to the firefox bugtracker. -- Duesentrieb 18:39, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thankx you really much : now I know what ! I'm reporting the bug ~~ Yug talk 19:09, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
What we have to remember
editLike this you can clean up your talk-page and just keep this 3 lines.
Image:Wikipedysta-Julo.jpg - this picture has been originally shot by my father (he is dead more than twenty years), but the print-copy from the very old black&white negative film (and scanning afterwards) is made by me myself. That is why I put myself as the author.
But, from the other side, it is not very important for me, what kind of license will be used here. If you advice me something else - may be it will be better solution. --Julo 23:42, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

- Thank you for your help, I have a little understand the rule of Commons. I'm studying, also English. I have a question, if I upload the picture maked by myself, which kind of the license I can designate? It must be the GFDL or Cc-by-sa? --SEVEN 13:41, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you Duesentrieb, I find the GFDL license of the picture Image:Honey comb.jpg in the English Wiki and modified the image. I don't know it's right or not, and I don't know how to classify it in English. --SEVEN 14:18, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

- Hi, Duesentrieb~ I find a picture form France Wiki. I think it's better to use and it's from free domain. If we can't get the license, you can delete the picture Sho.png. I'll upload the new picture to use. I must go to bed, it's so late, good night & see you~ --SEVEN 17:19, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

-- Srbauer 02:28, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
Thesaurus-Struktur
editThe important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 11:33, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Image of Tashkent Tower
editThanks for your information. This was only the second image I have uploaded to Commons (the first one having been Chiang_Kai-shek.jpg), and I guess I'm still not completely familiar with the procedures. As for the resolution, that was my mistake. I didn't realise the pic I saved from German Wikipedia was a lower-resolution version. I thought it was ok to upload this image to Commons because the image in German Wikipedia says: "Dieses Bild wurde von seinem Urheber zur uneingeschränkten Nutzung freigegeben oder erreicht nicht die nötige Schöpfungshöhe, um geschützt zu sein. Das Bild ist damit gemeinfrei („public domain“)", so I thought I could use it freely. If this image is not acceptable, I guess any image which doesn't explicitly say that the author has agreed to put it in the public domain shoudn't be accepted in Commons. Am I right?--AngelRiesgo 17:07, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks again. Since you have already requested the person who uploaded the image to German Wikipedia, I'll wait to see if the image is finally found to be acceptable. If that's the case, we should replace it with the original full-resolution version. If you get a reply from user Drebrikov, feel free to leave a message on my talk page, and I can do the uploading myself. Hopefully, I won't mess it up again. I decided to use that image in the Spanish article on Tashkent I've been working on today, and I thought that image was nice. By the way, may I ask you a couple of questions?
- I am thinking of uploading some pictures I took myself while travelling last year. When I upload such pictures, is it enough to say "Picture taken by me" followed by a PD template? Or is any extra information required?
- My second question concerns pictures of Chinese politicians like the one of Chiang Kai-shek that I uploaded to Commons a few days ago. I'm working on some China-related articles on Spanish wikipedia, like Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen. I've seen that a lot of old pictures of Chinese politicians are labelled as PD on English Wikipedia because according to Chinese copyright laws, pictures taken in China more than 50 years ago automatically enter the public domain. I was wondering if this Chinese copyright criterion is acceptable in Commons. Sorry about bothering you with these questions, but I'm not familiar at all with all these copyright issues.--AngelRiesgo 18:08, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your replies. I really appreciate it. --AngelRiesgo 22:00, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
This is utter rubbish. If the Library and Archives of Canada, who have acquired the Yousuf Karsh Collection, state that the copyright was expired, then that's good enough for me and for Wikipedia. See [1]. Lupo 19:01, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
- See also [2], where LAC states that they acquired the Karsh collection. Camera Press shall sue LAC, if they dare, or send an official DMCA takedown notice. I'd ignore spurious copyvio claims by anons. Lupo 19:11, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

Concerning about the HDB flats pictures and crying picture of Lee Kuan Yew, any works that is done by the Singapore government itself is considered as Public domain. [4] For the other images, I am proud to say that the images are donated to the Singapore National Museum Archives, and all the images there are also Public domain.
Thanks for your swift response.
The HDB mages are from the book Public Housing of Singapore, and gurantees Public domain as stated in the book in view of it is a piece of government research or survey work; therefore it is Public domain. This applies to [Image:Kallang.jpg]
The Lee Kuan Yew image [Image:Leecry.jpg] is from a scan of a Publicised book from various sources, and it is donated to the National Board of Archives. I am aware of the point that (4A) Where the work referred to in subsection (4) is an engraving or a photograph, the copyright shall continue to subsist until the end of the period of 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the engraving or photograph is first published. from [5], but you must note that if a photograph is taken by a ordinary person at his own accord and not issued by the government and donated to the museum or archives, the copyright is obliterated.
For your information, the photos of [Image:Shentonsway.jpg], etc are photos that I scanned it from a book (I forgot the title), but it says that all the images from there are guranteed PD, for they are recollections of photographs taken by ordinary people and donated to the archives/museum
Again, I would like to stress that none of the photographs are taken from any websites. I scaned them myself. Your response is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

seem to be (poor) reproductions - thus they would be PD, because you don't have any rights to reproductions : I Agree with this: all seals images should be PD (reagarding the substantial way of transformation i don't know how can it be calculated, some of the images are copletely redrawn and then modified with gimp. I'm not very sure if the label should be PD-seal. The reason for my reproduction is that I've seen work from IX-XIV century copyrighted on some sites, but my strong belief is that everything in this situation shoul be PD. Because also the photo of the artistic work does not provide any substantial way of transformation. Also anyone who can provide better quality for those images is welcomed.(I'm not very gifted and I don't have very good skills)CristianChirita 07:17, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Images by User:Decumanus
editThis user uploaded a lot of images and license them mostly as GFDL but there's always a small copyright notice © 2005 Matthew Trump (seems to be his real name). Is this compatible to the Commons licensing policy ? --Denniss 18:07, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, this is OK. Note that all images that are not PD are in fact copyrighted by someone. Having and reserving the copyright is necessary in order to put it under any license. The GFDL even recommends stating this explicitley - at the end of the license text [16] you will find the following:
ADDENDUM: How to use this License for your documents To use this License in a document you have written, include a copy of the License in the document and put the following copyright and license notices just after the title page: Copyright (c) YEAR YOUR NAME. Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation;
- So, yes, this is OK, even if it may seems confusing sometimes. -- Duesentrieb 20:05, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

question
editAdding my images to a few categories seems like a great idea. How do I do it? I looked at the help pages but was quickly lost in a jungle of links. Could you tell how it's done? How do I place my image into a category? The gallery part seems easier, I think I managed to place my image pelargon.jpg into a gallery? right?
Thanks for the tips about the categories Dues. I have another question. I looked at one of my images, namely this one: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Skurugata.jpg but it says "no pages link to this image". This is not right, both the Swedish and English wikipedia have articles about "skurugata" where this image is included. Why is this so? You know? Mnemo 18:16, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Please include this user to User:Duesentrieb/redlist. He/she copied images from en: as PD when description cleary tells about unknown copyrights status. See Image:Jose Manuel Restrepo.jpg for example. Thank you. --EugeneZelenko 03:33, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
unannounced image deletion
editYou deleted Image:MartinusVanSchalkwyk.jpg on 25 Apr 2005 with only the note "non-commercial^" and without contacting me at all. I cannot see the old page, so I have no idea where it came from or what the terms were, since it would all have been noted on that page. I find this quite rude and disrupting, since the image was used across a few language wikis, and I've only noticed it now. If you had contacted me and the image was indeed improperly licenced, I could have made an effort to find a usable one within a reasonable amount of time instead of just having the image ripped out. Dewet 06:01, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply; I realise that the whole copyright dillemma is a huge issue for wikipedia, and especially the commons. And, I do admit that I was a little "casual" in uploading images before, but I do now virtually only upload my own creations, in order to simplify things. I just have a few questions:
- How is Image:RandCurrencyR5coinsOldNew.jpg not correctly licenced? I took the photograph myself, as well as doing corrective work on it. Surely I can licence it?
- Regarding Template:SouthAfricaCopyright: The GCIS is the government information service, and on their website copyright statement:
- "Material featured on this website is subject to copyright protection unless otherwise indicated. Material may be reproduced free of charge in any format or media without requiring permission. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not in a derogatory manner or misleading context. The material may also not be used for any financial gain. Where the material is being published or issued to others, the source (including URL) and copyright status must be acknowledged."
- On second examination, this seems terribly close to a "No commercial use" clause, although an enquiry from my part delivered the response I noted in User:Dewet/GCIS, in which there was no "no commercial use" clause, only an attribution clause. In the Copyright Act of 1978, it states that "No copyright shall subsist in official texts of a legislative, administrative or legal nature, or in official translations of such texts, or in speeches of a political nature or in speeches delivered in the course of legal proceedings, or in news of the day that are mere items of press information." So, I think my original summary in the template is accurate, at least in the spirit of the statements and law quoted above.
- Thanks for the help so far! Dewet 14:14, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- As to the coins: reproductions are generally not considered an original work of art, even if they have been cleaned/corrected by hand. Thus, you have no copyright to it and can not license it - if you feel you did create a piece of art, you can license it. This is not very important, it only means that someone may use the image without attribution and you may not be able to force him to comply to your usage conditions (the CC terms). It is important however that you make sure the original is not copyrighted - mony usually is copyrighted, unless the design is quite old.
- OK, the licensing isn't that important to me, so if it gets used as PD doesn't faze me. But are you saying that since its copyrighted, it cannot be distributed at all?
- As to the government pictures: the usage terms of the website sound like non-derivative and non-commercial to me, both of which make the image non-usable for the commons. The copyright act as you quote it sounds to me similar to german law, which makes all work PD which is contained in a law, edict, political speach, etc, but not necessarily all work of government agencies. Especially, I don't see how this would make the Photographs PD. The email you received sounds better, thouogh - it would be good however to see the original question you sent there. Did you specifically ask about commercial use and derivative work? "You may use" does not necessarily mean "anyone can use", which would be required.
- I'll go dig it up, or ask the person for clarification about that...
- About your template: it would be a good idea to add links to the law and the mail (and the page with the terms of use) to the template, so others can look and see for themselves. It would be good to investigate this further, so we know if images from this website and by the S.A. government in general can be used freely. -- Duesentrieb 15:34, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll try to find out from those responsible; hopefully we have an enlightened (ha!) enough gov't to release their works in a similar fashion to the US gov't. Dewet 18:01, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Alhambra picture series
editHi,
I answered on the Discuss picture page.
Other questions follow :
1/can I open a new subcategory dedicated to this trend of pictures (about 20 ).
2/ Are my naming conventions correct (GRX as airport code, Alhambra or Generalife as site desc, figures to link with personal collection).
Have a good day !
Holycharly 12:13, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Hm, the airport code is somewhat non-obvious, i would prefer "Granade - " as a prefix - but that's not a real problem. You can create a subcategory by just using it (linking to it) - then follow the red link and put the new category into existing ones, that's all. Oh, and it would be good if you could place some of the images into categories answering the question "what" as opposed to "where" - like Category:Pottery, Category:Buildings, Category:Paintings, etc...
- I also replied to you on the image discussion page -- Duesentrieb 12:35, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- developments for this topic : all related pictures are now grouped under the new Alhambra, Granada ; either a picture about la Alhambra has this category, or it is in the gallery of the (same-name) article. According to your advices, the first kind also are placed to a second category (such as Branch, for example). I need to stay with the category Alhambra to focus on my upload lists. Later on, it could evolve, once inserted the pictures.
- please read my answer about the gazelle talk.
Thanks, but this is confusing.
editYou sent a note - I guess a standard form - to my talk page, pointing out that uploaded images should be categorised. That just confuses me, because I thought I'd properly put all the images I uploaded into the right category (saws). And, indeed, they seem to appear on that category page. Did I do it wrong?
The categorisation is very, very confusing for a newbie like myself - maybe I'll just go back to wikipedia and keep uploading local stuff there! The reason for my confusion is that I search for the right category, starting at the top - technology - tools - and reach http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Tools and find three different sorts of things: subcategories, including saws, that I think I understand; "articles", which don't seem to be articles, but seem to be collections of media that would fit well in subcategories; and a bunch of pictures at the bottom of the page that are tools, and that are also in either subcategories or articles, but seem arbitrarily selected.
That looks like too may different ways to sort things, to me. Why are "articles" stored in "categories"? Why not just subcategories, and put the articles (if any) somewhere else? This is a media store, I go over to wikipedia to write articles!
Is there any move to simplify this indexing scheme, or are we stuck with it? Thanks! Emrys2 14:58, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Categories and searching?
editThanks for pointing out that I'd failed to categorise two images. Is there some way I can find out the same thing without visiting every one of my images to check?
I've looked at Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote as you suggested, and I'd like to vote there, but there's something I still don't understand. I added text to all of my images explaining what they were. But, when I search for that text, I don't find it. This applies whether the image was placed in a category or in an article. For example, I can't locate my image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Chainsaw_starter_handle.jpg by searching for MS280C, and I can't locate my image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Drill_diamond_core.jpg by searching for the phrase "stone, brick or concrete". Does wikimedia not search this descriptive text, or am I doing something wrong? It strikes me that we'd have much less trouble over indexing if searching was more effective. Do any of the proposals on the vote page improve this searching? Thanks! Emrys2 15:58, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Force cat update
editI noticed your edit to Image:Dornier Do 17 V2 Werksbild Dornier 1935.jpg with the summary force cat update. Just wanted to point out that a "null edit" (where you hit "edit", then "save page" without making any changes) accomplishes the same thing. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 18:19, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hmmmmm ... ;-)
editHoi Duesentrieb,

SVG
editSo, while other formats are being debated at Commons:Village pump#What file formats should be allowed?, can we get SVG turned on, as that seems completely un-controversial? Do you know how to get that done, or who can do it? Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 4 July 2005 18:14 (UTC)
- We all hope this ! Duesentrieb, I think when SVG will be allow to upload on commons, that should be great if a visible announce is make, a « SVG format is now allow on Commons ! », like the nowadays « All active users are invited to vote in the Elections for the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation. » Thanks to consider this Yug talk 18:14, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
- I asked Brion about SVG last weekend on IRC. He said that although SVG is now "safe", the software isn't installed to render SVG as PNG. I suggested we could allow SVG uploads even though they can't render yet, but he said that would leave broken thumbnails all over the place. dbenbenn | talk 17:44, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Image:Kind of chinese stroke 1.JPG / Image:Kind of chinese stroke 2.JPG and the french fr:Image:Kind_of_chinese_stroke_bw.png
editThis case is special, because the book from which I took this 2 pic is teaching calligraphy by showing the shape of old chinese characters carve in walls of an old chinese temple. So I consider the original draws as Public Domain for long time. I had put this on commons because I was looking for help to extract the strokes from the book, and this work is done from today on the french fr:Image:Kind_of_chinese_stroke_bw.png.
In this new one, except the dark line, and the chinese naming of each stroke -which is a fact- just stay all the strokes from the old temple.
I think the 2 old one are copyrighted because of the text and have to be deleted, but the new one is simply like « ABCD » and is to consider as the old writing, under PD or GNU.
PS : I know that wasn't a great way, but I want say clearly than the 2 old files were there waiting to be clean up of copyrighted parts and I didn't knew an other way.

- Ok, I deleted them. I'm not sure if the picture on the fr:wp is PD, because the page layout may be copyright worthy by itself - but I can't judge that, and the picture is not on the commons, so it's ok for now. -- Duesentrieb 19:06, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi Duesentrieb,
please take a look at what I wrote in this image's page. The e-mail asking Fox for permission does not indicate that the image will be published without restrictions of use. I read at pt.wiki that the deletion of this image was voted and that the community decided to maintain it. Noticing that the e-mail has been published in portuguese only, I wonder how many users in Commons are able to read Portuguese... Regards, --Mschlindwein 10:25, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
Category:Drepanidae

-- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:08, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Did you ever contact the Library and Archives of Canada? If so, did you ever hear back from them, and if so, what did they write? Neither the old discussion (now at Commons:Village_pump_archive-13) nor the image description page nor its discussion page give any indication... Lupo 11:04, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Category: Photos
editHi Duesentrieb, let me answer in English too. I agree with you and with Thuresson, that's not good to have all images with the category "Photos". But I don't agree with the definition. Perhaps it would be better, to call this category "Photography" or so. And I'm very angry to see, that you can see hundreds of Pictures in the category "Photos" which are not different types than mine. So I think Thuresson or another administrator has to remove the category "photos" there too. Then I'll be silent or say "It's o.k." --S.moeller 12:57, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

I will NOT be contributing illustrations to Commons - or any other wiki
editI'm sorry, I know you talked to Gerard at Wikimania, and he had convinced me that I should go back to contribute here again. But after the way people behave here, molesting other peoples images, reverting licences at their own lack of insight. And foremost - NO COMMUNICATION WHATSOEVER - they only go on molesting other people's work. What kind of "wiki" is this? (I'm not blaming you, but people like Thuresson, dbenbenn and Paddy are simply to far away from proper communication skills to be able of normal human communication skills. They do not even deem others worthy of being informed of their actions.) The last "edit" by Paddy has convinced me of how Commons work - not.
I'd appreciate it if you could please see to it that my images get the licences they should have - as adviced by Thuresson - "nd". I will also do my best to advise other wiki users of how contributions are treated here on commons in order to avoid more images being molested. Br. Noorse 23:42, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Was sollen diese bescheuerten 100 Jahre pma?
-- Duesentrieb(?!) 17:21, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

-- Duesentrieb(?!) 14:28, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Unused images and categories
editDuesentrieb wrote:
- Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.
- The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 15:27, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
It would be much easier to keep track of the images one has uploaded, if there was a category "images-of-user-xyz". Is there a feature like this that I've missed? Otherwise, it's really hard to find the own images again to categorize them, if one has forgotten to do so during upload. The "my contributions" page is useless for that, because it does list images multiple times and also lists edit operations to image pages. -- Haui 17:08, 15 September 2005 (UTC).
- Sadly, there is no feature for listing all images you uploaded - I have in fact filed a feature request for that some time ago: bugzilla:3341. One solution would be to collect your images in a category (see the Category:User galleries), or you could put a private template on each description page (like I do with User:Duesentrieb/Image Stamp). For now, you will have to use your contribution page, sorry... -- Duesentrieb(?!) 17:58, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

This upload log is much better than the "my contributions" page (especially for the commons)! In the long term, I'll will move to SVG format for my diagrams. But since I use OpenOffice, and SVG export in OpenOffice is deadly broken - creating files that are worse to edit than bitmaps - I've to wait for some improvement there. I'm normally uploading also SXD versions of the files. By the way, the commons only allow old-fashioned SXD OpenOffice drawings but not the upcomming OpenDocument ODG alternative that is the preferred format of OpenOffice 2.0. When will this format be allowed at the commons? -- Haui 17:42, 17 September 2005 (UTC).

Scaling SVG in galleries
editHi Duesentrieb. Could you please take a look at bugzilla:3499? Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 21:55, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Hi - i don't think the PNG version is redundant, because it was extracted from NASA's original, whereas the SVG version was created after that, by hand, trying to imitate the original. The images are also not identical, thus we should keep the PNG version. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 23:22, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
- Alright. Sorry about that. I removed the incorrect {{Redundant}} tag (you could have done so yourself, of course!). I can see that your original version was extracted from AC72-1338_a.jpeg, but I wonder how User:Jossifresco produced the high-resolution version. dbenbenn | talk 03:37, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- no problem, and thanks for cleaning up! Regarding the high resolution version: I have found Image:Pioneer10-plaque.jpg on the web, and updated Image:PPlaqueLarge.png with a white-background-version of that. Not sure if Jossifresco used that, but it's big enough anyway :) -- Duesentrieb(?!) 12:02, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
elements cross-posted
- OK, I'll put it quite simply (well, OK, this is copyright, so... ;-), and of course this is merely as I understand it):
- Releasing all claim to a work is legally impossible in many jurisdictions, including the EU.
- This is often (but not always, and not necessarily only) because it is (deliberately) impossible to surrender the right of attribution.
- In such circumstances, failing to attribute people as the author is illegal (and often a criminal act rather than merely tortious).
- Even though (or, perhaps, because) the law is crafted so that people cannot surrender their moral rights, asking people to agree to surrender said rights is sometimes in such places illegal in and of itself.
- Therefore asking people to release under PD-self makes no sense over free-use in moral-rights countries - the former is legally impossible and the suggested alternative is, well, absolutely the same as free-use. Saying "please use 'PD-self'" which is not PD is veyr confusing - a European applying PD-self to get free-use to an upload of theirs would have their work (illegally, due to the Berne Convention) used like PD by an American. This would not be a good idea.
- The current (as of when you wrote your message) wording of PD-self was not sufficient to "take care of the EU issues". It suggested the legal possibility of releasing material "for any purpose, without any conditions" at all, whereas the whole point is that were one able to do just that it would be PD.
- I hope that that was, erm, clear. :-)
- Also, please do not use the sysop rollback feature on non-vandalism. It is generally considered rude.
- James F. (talk) 09:20, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
Please replace it with SVG. --EugeneZelenko 14:54, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
- done: Image:High voltage warning.svg, I have also changed the links in major projects and tagged the png as redundant. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 17:23, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
- Would you consider cropping the SVG to the triangle, as the PNG was? In general, it's easy to add space around an image using HTML trickery, but empty space that's built into the image can't be removed. dbenbenn | talk 19:13, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Sollte man hier also nicht was unternehmen?

Bild von mir
editHallo Duesentrieb!
-- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:03, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Pics
editHey Duesentrieb. The reason I haven't listed catagories for my pics is that I don't know what all categories there are. I'm uploading images here primarily for use in Wikipedia articles, where I am much more active. I will try and add categories to my images from now on.
Categories
editThanks for the welcome (thou I have been here a while earlier :D). Anyway I do have a habit of categorising all photos I upload as I have diligently done so for my latest batch of photos, and I dont mind helping out to categories other photos over time. Cheers!--Huaiwei 12:27, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- Ah thats not a problem at all. In fact, I have been harbouring thoughts of cleaning things up since coming here and seeing what a literal mess some of it can be! :D Will get to work when I can find the time. You need not apologise for the buzz, and I appreciated it. At least someone finally notices I uploads something here. Muahaha. --Huaiwei 13:50, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Copyright, etc
editDone. Cheers, --Ecelan 16:10, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Images from other wikis
editAbout the images from en.wikibooks.org, there's no more information about this image. But being a screenshot of an open source program, in a GFDL tutorial, I thought there will be no problem. The screenshot is here [21].
Was kann man da tun? -- Simplicius 17:38, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
And Image:Albert Einstein.jpg again!
editHi there,
someone has put up this image for deletion (see Template:Deletion_requests#Image:Albert_Einstein.jpg). I have now contacted the LAC and asked for confirmation; they have confirmed that these images are in the public domain. See Image talk:Albert Einstein.jpg. I hope that settles this once and for all.
Reverts
editThanks for the reverts on my talk page.
-- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:45, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, my mistake. I have assumed that a hand drawn rendition of a known character would be OK. Roo72 03:00, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks
editJust wanted to say thanks for your advice at VP re: museum photos and other issues. Thanks to Wikimedia, I know more about copyright than I ever imagined!!! :-/
rsvg version
editHi Duesentrieb. Do you know what version of rsvg the Commons uses to render SVG files? Image:Interstate 4.svg has two incorrect lines off the side, but they don't appear when I render the SVG myself with rsvg version 2.13.2. Perhaps we need to get someone to upgrade to the newest version? Thanks, User:dbenbenn 03:33, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Automatic category guesser
editI want to perform a small test run of moving images from Polish Wikipedia to Commons (10-20 images), this time with correct category tagging. Is your automatic category guesser ready ? Taw 16:33, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- I'm having a strange problem with a database connection, and an open ticket in my Real Job (tm)... I hope I have it up and running again by tomorrow. I'm in IRC now, if you want to chat, but probably not looking all the time. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 17:19, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- OK, I fixed it. I hope i won't brake it in the next few days... I don't plan to change anything on CommonSense itself, but i'll have to hack around the underlying libraries, so I *might* brake it for a while. I'm usually on IRC when I do stuff like that, so you cann yell at me right away :)
- So, go ahead and play with it - have fun -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Walden 69 and images download
editAll the images that I upload was downloaded for english version for Wikipedia, and I wish include in catalan version or Viquipedia. You can see it !
Walden 69 and images download
editWell, I beg you pardon, but I'm contrutor of VIQUIPEDIA , the Catalan WIKIPEDIA (Have you know what is Catalonia ?). I read some articles in it, and I did want to include some images, but the ONLY form for include it was download of the English Wikipedia (all images I download are free or GNU) and re-upload in Commons. It's very strange for me, but I did so. I'm sorry if I don't do it well. I will do better now. Thanks for your help. Walden69
- Gruss -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:53, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Walden69
editHallo. I don't speak english very well. I will ask you some questions:
- How I can write the information of the images what I download without it ? I will do it, but I don't know how.
- The flags and logos of regional divisions (France, Italy, Germany). They most are in png format, they don't are in Commons and I don't have acces to tags. They are in english wikipedia. The official flags are or public domain, isn't it ?
- I download to commons images of English Wikipedia. Now I put the words under the image and "file history". It's right, or not ?
- Now I download images of NARA (public domain) or flags of webpages. How I can know if a image in a webpage is public domain, GNU or so ?. The most of pages have no reference to it. Only "copyrignt" or not. The images of 75 years ago are public domain ... in USA. And, in Europe ???
Thanks for your time, I'm sorry for my english.
—Walden69 17:22, 6 December 2005 (UTC) Thanks for the answer, but ... I want to know HOW I put the tags in the images of you have the reference. How I put the origine of the images that I have download ago. Explain me, please. The format png, for example, is in article OSCEOLA, the photo Osceola.png. I don't can have the tag of this photo, and the most of flags, too —Walden69 17:22, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
