Rename
editPlease could an administrator or filemover rename http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_corn_mill_ar_Rhydowen.jpg | http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_corn_mill_at_Rhydowen.jpg | typo in title.
Thank you. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:32, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Talk pages don't work like that. No-one saw the message. I applied a Rename tag to the image - it was actioned within the hour. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 15:43, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Geograph
editPleased to see that you are uploading Geograph images here rather than Wikipedia. To complete the job, please use Magnus' tool to upload. This ensures that they get the Geograph tag (and saves you copying them to your machine). — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 10:27, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Tobacco_etch_virus.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Tobacco_etch_virus.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

No Commercial Use
editI have just nominated a number of your images for deletion because the source requires that permission be obtained for commercial use. Although the various Wikipedia projects are non-commercial, Commons is
- "a database of 7,912,602 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute." (Commons Home Page)
"Freely usable" requires that commercial use be part of the license. For further information, see Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses. If you have any questions, you can leave leave a message here for the next few days or, later, on my talk page. If you think my nominations are wrong, by all means join the discussion at the various deletion requests linked above. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:51, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- I guess you are right. I have just wasted my morning trying to provide some images for Wikipedia articles. Never mind, I'll know better what is acceptable at Commons next time. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- I am afraid that some aspects of contributing here are a steep learning curve. I've found that it is best when trying something new to do it once and see what happens -- or ask someone. Many of the active editors -- including me -- are happy to answer questions on their talk pages.
- And, the good news is that five of the ten you uploaded this week are good, solid additions -- especially File:Southern Lyctus beetle.jpg -- UGH! Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:12, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, adding Mprotected to the description page of an image does not actually protect the image. Either way, the use of the template is misleading as the image is due to be included on English Wikipedia's Main Page and not that of Commons' Main Page. KTC (talk) 20:43, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
- In adding this tag to the image, I have been trying to obey the instructions on the Edit page when preparing a set of hooks for DYK. I have done this at least a dozen times and I'm not sure whether the occasion to which you are referring is unique or I have been wrong all the time. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:56, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I saw when you added the template before but didn't leave a comment at the time. No, the situation I referred to isn't unique. Those instructions seriously need rewording. The mprotected it refers to is the en.wp version and added to the file description page of a file located on the English Wikipedia, not that of Commons. Either way, the actual correct practice is for an en.wp administrator to protect the file if it's located on en.wp, upload a local copy to en.wp if it is on commons and protect the local version, or for a Commons administrator to protect the Commons file. Nowadays, there's a bot here on Commons that automatically handle the third cases. So we normally don't have to worry about it. KTC (talk) 12:25, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- OK. Thanks for the explanation. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:35, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
