Curly Turkey
Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:53, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

A practice we have been trying ...
edit[Excuse me for poking my head up over here too] For images from a work, like File:Laura Secord A Study in Canadian Ptriotism (1907) page 1 portrait.jpg when there is a series of them, we look to try to create a category relating to the work. It seems to work nicely, and for me it reminds people (other administrators) that when they are dealing with a work at another wiki that doesn't sit in isolation. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:15, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
editHello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 02:16, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Curly Turkey, Frans Masereel died only in 1972[1]. Thereby his works are likely protected til end of 2042. You need a permission from his heir(s). --Túrelio (talk) 10:48, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Images on Mediawiki wiki
editHi. You have been uploading off-topic images to the Mediawiki wiki, and continue trying to do that despite that your account is being blocked. Are you running some upload script that is misconfigured? -- Tegel (talk) 12:34, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- I was just hunting around for a place to ask this question. I'm trying to upload with Commonist 1.2.0. Why would my account be blocked? Curly Turkey (talk) 12:37, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- ARGH! I had it configured to upload to mediawiki and not commons ... but how on earth did you know? Curly Turkey (talk) 12:39, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- The Mediawiki wiki is considered a small wiki and there is a group of users that monitors recent changes on all small wikis using the IRC-feed and bots. Mass-upploading of images to that wiki is unusual. But you are not the first user, and probably not the last, that has uploaded images there instead of here using Commonist. -- Tegel (talk) 12:46, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Well, it seems like mediawiki gets set as the default instead of Commons. Curly Turkey (talk) 13:04, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hey, Tegel, do you think you could lift my block on MediaWiki now? Curly Turkey (talk) 04:17, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
- I placed a 1 week block to get your attention to the problem, and a local admin decided to changed it to be indefinite. I can't act against local admins since I can't overrule the local community. So no, I can't lift your block on the Mediawiki wiki. You have to bring it up with the local community. -- Tegel (talk) 06:52, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- Tegel: Well, that's a problem—I can't post on my talk page at MediaWiki, and I can't use email there, either. Could you ask about this for me? Why would someone make the block indefinite, anyways? Curly Turkey (talk) 08:58, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
