First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Kaida logograms

edit

Hello, I noticed the image you made of the kaida logograms. Where it says "rape", it should say "canola". Rape in English means "erőszakos közösülés" in hungarian, so this is quite inapproprate translation. --149.169.221.124 20:41, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it depends: rape is fine in Britain, but will likely be seen as meaning something else in America. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:03, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Canola is also not correct, as it's an oil, not a plant. As Adam said, rape is also the name of a plant in Europe; anyway, I replaced the word with colza. Capmo (talk) 22:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cropping images

edit

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image, as you did for File:Malika Tirolien, 2014.jpg, I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appear in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and vice-versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 22:56, 12 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tip, will give it a try next time. Regards, Capmo (talk) 15:56, 13 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Re: Jaraguá do Sul Landscape

edit

—capmo (talk) 19:02, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you!

  The Special Barnstar
Hi Capmo, I just wanted to pop by and say thank you for your hard work and efforts in sorting through the images at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Carfanatic2019,

Looking back at the DR it was rather sloppy and I should've put more effort into it instead of just nominating everything like I did, I apologise for the sloppiness with that DR,
Certainly wont pull that stunt again but anyway just wanted to say thank you for your hard work and effort all of which are extremely appreciated and I'm grateful for your work too,
Take care and stay safe, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 19:14, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Davey. It turned out to be quite useful, as it led me to learn how to use tools like COM:AWB for batch editing of files. :) —capmo (talk) 02:23, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category:Spider silk

edit

Anatomy (Greek anatomē, 'dissection') is the branch of biology concerned with the study of the structure of organisms and their parts. Spider silk is not part of the body of spiders, therefore it is simply wrong to add it directly to Category:Araneae anatomy. Spider silk is a product of the spinnerets, therefore it may be addet to Category:Araneae spinnerets or the other way round, but not directly to Category:Araneae anatomy. --Kersti (talk) 16:28, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kersti, I see your point! But categories Araneae spinnerets and Spider silk were circular referencing each other, which should be avoided. One of them needs to be removed from the another one. Regards, —capmo (talk) 16:39, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given

edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 16:35, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
