Grey square optical illusion - usage

edit

Dear Adrian Pingstone,

I found the image you developed regarding the proof of the grey square optical illusion, available here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grey_square_optical_illusion_proof2.svg

I would like to include it in a commercial eBook which uses other images and goes over other topics. Would you grant me permission to incorporate this image, giving you credit? The objective is to sell the book online in a platform (which may have DRM) such as Amazon.

Thank you very much for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WalkVoid (talk • contribs) 12:34, 18 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for writing. I'm puzzled why my name is on this file because I didn't draw it or put it on Commons, so my name being connected with it is a mystery.
The grey "bridge" was drawn by a User called Domdomegg but he certainly didn't create the original (the one that has no bridge). You can contact him (I'll assume he is a male) for permission, but the copyright status of the original illusion may be unknown to him so he might not be able to give you permission. Contact Domdomegg by clicking on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Domdomegg Then I hope you will see "Email the User" in the left hand column. Hope this works (it worked for me).
I think that illusion beats all I've ever seen, it's impossible to believe the two patches are the same colour exactly, no matter how long I look at them. Best wishes, Adrian, Bristol, England Arpingstone (talk) 06:59, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nick, Your picture of the armed police officer outside Downing Street is fantastic. The picture is of me! I’m now retired but would love to get an original copy without the pixelation, is that possible? My daughter made me aware of it recently and it would be great to get an opportunity to get an original. Hope you can help. David, thanks for writing. I'm Adrian Pingstone from Yate, near Bristol (I don't know who Nick is!). What pic do you refer to? I'd like to see it even though I can't help you with a better version. To locate it I need the article name on Wikipedia or its file name (or it might not be on a Wikipedia page but on the image bank called Wikimedia). I have several thousand pics on Wikipedia and so locating one needs more than you told me. However, the pics I put on WP (or WM) are exactly the same in resolution and pixel size as came off my camera so no higher res version exists. Sorry to disappoint you. You are, of course, very welcome to use my pics in any way and anywhere you wish because they are all Public Domain., Best wishes, Adrian Arpingstone (talk) 08:33, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your Camera

edit

I have noticed that your pictures are really nice quality, I was wondering what camera you use. Please email me your answer at indybird(underscore)halo180(at)yahoo(dot)com. Thank you, Nick

Nick, firstly several general points: don't put new entries at the top because if you look at the dates below each entry you'll see that new stuff goes at the bottom (so I've moved it to here), also users don't answer by email because other people like to see the answers, and finally NEVER give your email address clearly, disguise it (as I've done for you) because spammers will find it and your email spam could go up a lot. Now to the answer:-
Most of my pics are from an Olympus C750UZ digital compact (takes great pics but is no longer on the market), a few are from a Canon S3 IS digital compact (I'm very unhappy with this camera because of purple fringing) and now my very recent aircraft pics are from a most excellent Nikon D50 digital SLR using a Nikon 18 to 200mm telephoto lens. There's an easy way to tell what camera I used, just click on the pic in the article and it usually says at the bottom (but not always because a degraining program I used to use destroys the EXIF data which contains the make of camera, exposure, shutter speed etc). - Arpingstone 19:21, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Computer pic

Hello. The image more appears to depict a typical table set up with technology, rather than your "three gigahertz personal computer", most of which is out of the picture at the bottom right of the image. -Mardus 04:04, 11 November 2007 (UTC) (reply at my Talk)Reply

Depends on whether the reader regards "computer" as the entire set up or just the tower, and it depends on the subject of the article the pic is in (none, in this case). So I'm not clear what point you're making. Best Wishes - Arpingstone 23:11, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I referred to the image description, which somewhat appears to misrepresent image contents. Granted, the computer can be seen at the bottom right, but someone who doesn't know anything about computers and who hasn't seen computers before might as well understand the computer to be either of the devices on the table or all of the devices on the table.
On another note, it's really nice that you place your images in the public domain. -Mardus 09:38, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! The Rubicon here, how did that particular Columbia 400 make it across the pond? I live in Oregon, I just fly 172s but oh to fly my states most pretty creation. I know it has a huge range, but did it fly across the pond to England? Or was it shipped?

I came across this aircraft while photographing at an airfield about 20 miles from where I live. So I'm sorry but I don't know its story. Best Wishes - 77.102.247.155 17:59, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sort of! Years ago I got 7 pics on a.net at:

but at the time I had only an Olympus compact so I had too many rejections and gave up loading to a.net. Now that I have a Nikon D50 DSLR I still find the a.net standards too high (relative to the amount of time I'm willing to spend on post-processing) so I will have just those 7 for ever. Quote: "A Qantas Boeing 747-400 (registration unknown) approaching runway 23L at London Heathrow Airport, England. The houses are in Myrtle Avenue, at the south east corner of the airport", picture image:qantas b747 over houses arp.jpg.

G'day Adrian.

Runway 23 is now only a taxiway so i am pretty sure you mean runway 27L and the photo of Myrtle street does not match up with the image in Google Earth with only three home's in between the tree and the end of the street, not four.

Looking forward to your reply.....Have a great day, Farceur.

You are right, the runway should have been 27L. I can't imagine how I made the mistake considering that I've been to Heathrow 23 times in the last 5 years (I live 100 miles away). The road is most definitely Myrtle Avenue (not Myrtle Street). I know it very well indeed, so you are viewing Google Earth wrongly somehow. I'm off to Heathrow again in about 10 hours time and, with west winds, there's every chance I'll be at Myrtle! Best Wishes - Arpingstone 22:51, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

777 crash at LHR

edit

Hi Arpingstone,

Some crazy event in your very own back yard today. Did you go to take a peek? I wonder what the final determined cause will be. If the double-engine failure (that is the current speculation on A.net) was due to a pure software failure, that would be pretty scary! Jawed 05:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it was weird to look at a crash on the TV showing an area of Heathrow I know very well. However, because of the dull weather here, and the probable traffic congestion and closed roads, I decided not to go there. But I have added a pic of a similar B777 (G-YMMD, a -200ER) to the crash article at en:British Airways Flight 38. I'm hoping the cause will be a simultaneous bird strike on both engines but I haven't seen any reports of birds being seen around, so that cause seems unlikely. The preliminary report will be out in a few days. Thanks for writing - Arpingstone 09:52, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

more image area now...

A few things, I saw an aircraft like this over my head a few months ago and had a discussion about how they aren't being used like they were when I was much younger. The photograph is great, and I made it a little bigger (like there is less of a crop). I wanted to let you know in case you would rather revert it.

And in a completely different direction, I was laughing while doing some research for a weed that grows in England. The documentation that was available to me made it sound like the son of the first head botanist at the Oxford Botanical Garden got kind of angry when his dad died and threw a lot of the seeds the dad had been keeping out into the land. In that same document, there was a quote from a later botanist who said that he watched the seeds from the plant I was writing about board the train in Oxford and get off in Tilehurst. It was kind of funny stuff to read in the middle of all of the biology, formal descriptions and stuff. I thought about taking that trip by train myself and linked to the google map in the article: en:Senecio squalidus.

I even put photographs of the train stations into the category with the little invader: Category:Senecio squalidus.

So... I was also wondering if there were any photographers from England who are active and might take a few photographs of this 'garden thug'. It should be blooming from April through November there (maybe even in March).

Mostly, thanks for the photograph and revert it if you think it best to. -- carol 08:07, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your most excellent pic change, I agree that I had clipped it too hard and that yours looks much better.
(this next para is my mistake, please ignore it. I thought you had set a px in the actual article). Incidentally I have removed the 242px in the code, it's now WP policy to not include px values (except in rare cases) so that the reader can set their own value in Prefs, depending on the width of their monitor. For example, my screen is 1680px wide so I need the max pic size available in Prefs which is 300px. Someone with, say, a 1000 pixel wide screen will find that too big. The default if Prefs is not set is 180px.
The only reason that I set the pixels for that thumbnail was because I wanted to trigger a redraw of the thumbnail -- it was purely a mechanically inspired decision. -- carol 01:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't know anything about the weed and don't recall seeing it around Bristol where I live, but I will look out for it - Best Wishes, and thanks again, from Adrian - Arpingstone 09:21, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I fully admit to never reading any of the licenses I have been using for the last decade -- what I read on the GFDL-retouched template was that it was for images that had been in the public domain. Another thing that I have noticed here at commons is that several images are licensed with several licenses.
I am curious what you know about licensing or what your concerns/thoughts are or perhaps what your experience is with this. -- carol 01:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
First, apologies for the long delay in replying. I understand nothing about licencing simply because I have no need to:-) I'm happy to let the world use my pics in any way whatever so I put the template Arpingstone on the Image Description page and the phrase Photographed by Adrian Pingstone in (insert date here) and placed in the public domain.
That's it. No complications, no worries! Of course, I can only do that because I only use pics taken with my own cameras. If other people's pics or other sites pics are used then that's another matter (about which I wish to know nothing!) Best Wishes from Adrian - Arpingstone 09:32, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. I have seen 'a few hours' take more than a week here, so no worries :)
I found another image of yours after I removed it from its position of 'honor' on the English wikipedia page for Senecio. I opted instead for an scan of an old botany page painting of Senecio vulgaris. My goal there was to put images of Senecio that have articles. Also, now that I know your camera points down sometimes.... -- carol 13:26, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Arpingstone,

Firstly a big appreciation to all your work on Wiki. You have truly done an amazing job and your photographs are really stunning. I just have a small request, i know someone above has already asked for some above, I was wondering if you could get some of PIA Boeing 777-300 series photographs I could use for the PIA article on Wikipedia. Many Thanks --Fast track 00:27, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your nice comments, much appreciated. I would love to take some PIA pics but whenever I go to Heathrow they don't seem to take off or land. But I'll remember your request and hope a 777 appears next time I go (but that won't be for a month). Best Wishes - Arpingstone 22:02, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem! Keep the LHR pics coming. Ok, I checked the PIA Timetable, here is the general place to see which aircraft PIA is sending into LHR [2]. Scroll down to "London, UK" and you will see the aircraft used. It seems like the Lahore and Islamabad services will be getting regular flights into LHR with B773. --Fast track 02:55, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Editing my images

edit

Hi, Arpingstone,
May I please ask you, if you edit my images please upload your edits to new versions and do not overwrite my originals. The thing is that I use my images at my web site and I do not feel it is the right thing to do to use the images, which were edited by somebody else. In any case I'd like to keep my original images for my own record. Thank you.--Mbz1 01:32, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

There's no way of answering if you don't tell me which pictures you are talking about - Arpingstone 15:59, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Here's one I found

. BTW may I please ask you,if you know how that shape of contrail came about? Thank you.--Mbz1 16:35, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry but although I was an Aerodynamicist (before I retired) my work was on Airbus wing design so I have no knowledge of contrail shapes. On the subject of my modifying your original pictures then you are wrong. I do not ever overwrite the original as you know because you were able to revert my correction of the slope on the contrail pic in the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrail. Had I overwritten the original you could not have done that reversion! Incidentally I find it puzzling you prefer the reader of the Contrail article to see a sloping picture as against an upright picture. There's no shame in accepting a correction, after all you could have made that correction so easily before you did the upload. Best Wishes - Arpingstone 21:20, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You did change my original image. If one uploads the image with the same name, one gets a warning: A file with this name exists already, please check Image:Contrail and tsunami warning sign.jpg if you are not sure if you want to change it. I reverted your change after I saw it, but for quite some time your edit was displayed at my web site. As I said before I do not care, if my images are edited and I do not care, if these edits are put to the articles instead of my originals, but I would like to keep my originals in my user galleries, if you do not mind. I'd also like to mention that I kind of feel sorry for people, who could see only "amateur-looking slope" in an interesting image. BTW I am an amateur.--Mbz1 21:35, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am puzzled by your statement that "you did change my original image. If one uploads the image with the same name, one gets a warning: A file with this name exists already, please check Image:Contrail and tsunami warning sign.jpg". Obviously that filename exists because it's WP policy that image re-edits (say for tilt or lack of contrast) should be uploaded under the SAME filename. I haven't time tonight to look for the policy statement but I've read it many times. No harm is done because the previous version remains in the list on the Image Description page. The previous uploader can then, if the edit is disliked, revert (as you have done, in order to restore the tilt). What I am not going to do is go against WP policy and change the filename, there's no point (from my point of view) because the previous version is preserved.
I think you are saying that my version of the pic then appears on this other website because you are taking pics for the other site off Commons. If my changes are appearing on the other website there's nothing I can do. I suppose you'd have to rename your original and use that new name in the website. I'm not going to violate WP policy just for you because I've edited (mostly for tilts) hundreds of pics (I repeat, in strict accordance with WP policy) and have never received a complaint.
Remember that to me it's just a Commons picture, I could not know that you have another site, I have followed WP policy on re-uploaded pictures, and this problem has never arisen in the 5 years I've been working with pictures. Commons does not host your original and my edit, under different names. That might be helpful for you, but it's not policy.
I think only a change of policy to require edited pics to be uploaded under a new name would solve your problem. Apologies if I've misunderstood your problem in anything I've written here. Arpingstone 23:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Here's the quote from the Commons policy:
Taste may differ
Remember that taste between users may differ. What some users consider a an improvement to an image may be considered by some a mutilation. It may therefore sometimes be advisable to upload improvements as separate files instead of overwriting the original and link to the modified version in the other versions field of the description template.

Please also accept my apologies, if I said something wrong. Best regards.--
Mbz1 01:38, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Deep apologies, I had not seen that quote. Nevertheless it still leaves a problem where the other person is using a Commons picture somewhere else but wants their version to appear in that other place. What I can't do is change the filename everytime I edit a picture because it's a longer procedure, and one problem arising in five years is not reason enough to do so. Nevertheless I feel a complete fool for not being aware of that quote and will try to be more aware of the proper policy details in the future. I have just seen your galleries and they are stunning! I promise that I will not alter any picture by you in the future. My very best wishes - Arpingstone 09:26, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
 • There's really no need for any apologies. You just did what you believed was the best for the image and I should have had thank you for doing this.Best wishes.--Mbz1 15:41, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the "ludicrous ruling"

edit

Hi Adrian!

About your post-deletion comments at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Pompidou centre paris arp, jpg.jpg:

Utterly ludicrous ruling (I took the picture). But sadly there is nothing I can do about it.

I certainly do not doubt, and nor did anyone else, that you took this photo. Unfortunately, there are laws in place in many countries which say that taking a photograph of original architecture creates a derivative work of that copyrighted architecture, and so any photo of it would be a copyright violation. France is among many countries with such (in my view, very absurd) rules, and we're bound to respect the laws of the country in which the photo is taken.

tl;dr it wasn't an absurd ruling on the administrator's part to delete this; we don't get to decide the law, alas. :/

I wonder if it's OK to take pictures in Rhyl, Llandudno, Cowlyn Bay and Chester in June. I hope the architects are not alive!!!!

You're fine here. On this count, Britain has some of the most liberal laws in the world.

Also, don't take any of this personally. For what it's worth, you have much really excellent material here on Commons and you're a huge asset to us. :) So keep up the good work. Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 06:27, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. First off, you have taken some brilliant photographs of Bristol. However, in the blurb for some of them you seem to imply that the floating harbour was a manmade course of the River Avon. Actually, the floating harbour follows the natural path of the river, it is the more direct one along by the Asda in Bedminster that was man-made. Thanks guys, your comments are very appreciated. That shot was taken at Kemble Airfield, about 25 miles from where I live. The components of the RAF Role Demo did a fly through before they began their display. The E-3 is a sedate aircraft so it was fairly easy to capture a sharp pic. A few moments later the Tornados were flying around flat out and sharp pics got much harder! I'm working (slowly) on adding the Kemble pics, a static Sea Hawk next. Thank you, Freima

Hi Freima! Sorry, I've looked back at my photos from that show and the turquoise Imp does not appear at all. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk)

Adrian,
I am in the process of finishing off a book on the JP and wondered if I may use your splendid photograph, duly credited to you and a free copy? I am on WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Clarke_(Historian)
Best wishes Bob

Yes, I would be delighted if you used the photo. I make all my pictures Public Domain so that others can use them freely. I took it at Kemble Airport (used to be called Kemble Airfield but has mysteriously acquired the title Airport although it has no scheduled and no charter services!). I took it at the 2008 Open Day, when they got both aircraft in the air. The two did 2 full circuits of the field so this was not merely one flying past the other! My hobby is aviation photography, I have a low-range Nikon D50 DSLR.
I would love to have a copy of your book so I will email you my address via your personal website. Incidentally I have a connection with the University of Bath, where I note that you lecture. I got a B.Sc in Electrical Engineering from Bath while the Claverton Down campus was still a building site. So I did my degree studies at Bristol College of Science and Technology (in Muller Road, Horfield) and got my degree in 1966. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 09:42, 23 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please may we have copyright clearance for the use of the RED ARROWS images outlined above for a BECTA education project. Thank you,

Yes, go ahead and use any of my images, anywhere you like, in any way you like. They are all Public Domain so I have relinquished my copyright on them. It would be nice if you acknowledged my name but that's not a requirement. Incidentally, there are no "images outlined above" but it doesn't matter. Photograph of the Lifeguards:

edit

Regarding this image:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/Ceremony.lifeguard.london.arp.jpg
There has been some question on the James Blunt website as to whether he is one of the riders. I notice that Wikipedia states that this photograph was taken in 2005 which would make this impossible. Could you please clarify this for us? On another note I wish to comment on how lovely your photographs are. Thank You!

Thanks for the compliment! I can tell you the exact details of that photo - I took it while on a holiday in London at 1.27pm on June 12th 2005. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 19:52, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Morris 1100 photo

edit

Hi from New Zealand. I'm intrigued by your photo at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_1100 called 1966.morris.1100.arp.jpg (the second one down with the lady in it). Was that an Australian Morris 1100? As far as I know only 1100s manufactured in Oz used the over-riders on the bumpers, although it is always possible that the one in your photo had bumpers fitted from a Riley or a Wolsley. As an owner of an Australian made Morris 1100 (originally bought by my grandfather in 1967) I find this interesting. Cheers Minorhistorian (talk) 09:56, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've discovered that Spanish 1100s had the over-riders as well, which proves that it is possible to learn new things in Wikipedia. Minorhistorian (talk) 21:29, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Greetings from England. The grey 1100 in the picture was bought by my wife-to-be 5 years before I met her. We met in 1976 and married in 1977. Because I had a car as well (Hillman Avenger) we sold that 1100. She only remembers that she bought it from a dealer here in Bristol so I doubt it could have been Australian. Sorry I can't enlighten you further, Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 18:19, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

More photos of an abandoned church in Bristol?

edit

Do you have any pictures of the abandoned church in the bottom right corner of your River.avon.from.balloon.bristol.arp.jpg picture? I stumbled across the church when I was roaming around Bristol last spring but I didn't have my camera with me. I don't even remember the name of it. Cecelia, Atlanta, GA,US

Yes, I have a good picture of that church (Saint Peters), also taken from a balloon. I can't get the picture ready for you to see at the moment but I'll do so in the next 12 hours. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 09:34, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

bristol roundabout

edit

Hi Adrian

I am preparing a technical guidance note on the design of roundabouts with traffic signals and would like to use your excellent image of the Bristol roundabout on the cover. It will have to be cropped to fit. Some of the road markings at that site do not comply with official guidance and I would need to make some minor digital editing to avoid it appearing that non standard practice is being encouraged. I know that you have put the image in the public domain but I would just like your confirmation that this includes making minor changes to the image.

Thanks in advance

David Overton

Thanks for writing, Yes, public domain does mean that you are free to modify that image in any way you like including changing the markings. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 16:09, 19 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

You might be interested to look at my KB-50 image

which I have recently dug out of my old photos and digitised. I thought: I'll put that up on the en:B-50 Superfortress page, for it's quite fun, only to see your image!

It looks as if we were at the same event and I'd guess you clicked the shutter just a few secs after I did, with the Destroyer almost engaged. Of course, it's possible the quartet visited several Battle of Britain Shows that afternoon (I was at Waterbeach and it was 14 Sept 1963). Any recollections of the place? Hello,

I realize you have released all of your photos into the public domain, but I am interested in using your swan photo in a book I am writing and my publisher refuses to allow me to use it unless you sign a form asserting that you are the photographer of the image. I would also need the highest resolution version of the photo. Would it be possible to speak to you about this further? I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Mattheweg

Sure, please ask me right here - Arpingstone (talk) 15:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for responding! I have a form I can send you, and all you would have to do is sign it and email it back to me. I will credit you in the book as well. Please email me at [email protected]. Thanks again.

There is nothing "most peculiar" about that deletion request. The file was uploaded by soneone other than the author, with no verifiable source indicated. What you ask is not necessary since I passed her my camera, told her what to press, told her when to press the shutter and I prepared and uploaded it to Commons. New Categories

Hello Adrian,

first of all I'd like to pay my respect to the amount and quality of pictures you provided to the project. It always shows that equipment is one thing, the major component is the thingy behind the camera. I came across your pictures while adding content to the Category:Aircraft by registration, which has recently been introduced. This is the reason why I contact you. I wanted to draw your focus to this new category and kindly ask, if - in case you upload a new picture, you could add the a/c-registration as a category and, if the category of the registration does not exist yet, create a new category containing as categories Aircraft by registration and the respective name of the airline. Your support would be much appreciated. Thank you. -- Wo st 01 (talk) 22:00, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Auster XR246

edit

Evening Adrian, Nice pic as ever. It set me off over the net and also to Wrecks and Relics (G-AZBU not in 2006 ed, I think) and I still don't know if the paint job is genuine, i.e. if G-AZBU was serial XR246 before. One question I can answer. RAE always divided their aircraft into flights, so at Farnborough (which is well recorded in Peter Cooper's book) in the '60s there were: Armament Flight; Structures and Mechanical Engineering Flight; Transport Flight; Instruments and Photographic Flight; and Radio Flight. Cooper has a A.O.P.9 in the Radio Flight (at Farnborough) re "Green Salad" (eh?), but it was XN412. It's not a complete list and does not include Bedford only aircraft. What was the evidence for Bedford?TSRL (talk) 16:55, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just remembered the Auster site http://www.auster.ukf.net/Auster prodn list.txt. Seems clear that XR246 did become G-AZBU, not v.v. The CAA registration detail says XR246 a RAE aircraft, though not where.TSRL (talk) 17:16, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for writing and sorry to be so long in replying. I now have no idea where I saw RAE Bedford and unfortunately I don't have time to do the search again. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 21:30, 10 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice Photo of my Sunbeam Alpine

edit

Hi Adrian,

I hope this finds you. Nice photo of my Series IV Sunbeam Alpine HMY200B en:File:Sunbeam.alpine.IV.arp.jpg but a small correction - it was taken at Kemble Air Show as I have never attended the Yate Car Show! If you google images "Sunbeam Alpine" this photo is currently coming up first - I feel quite honoured.

It must have been fascinating working with Concorde - you are a lucky man!

Geoff

Thanks for your kind remarks. What a strange error I made, it couldn't be Yate because of the aircraft in the background! I've corrected the writing that you see when you click on the photo, to say Kemble Air Day. Shame the picture isn't better quality but I didn't have the DSLR I have now, just a compact (Olympus C750).
I've inserted a direct link to the photo into your text. edit

Hi Adrian

Just wanted to say thanks for posting your photo of XH135 on the Canberra article (en:English Electric Canberra), it's great to see our little corner of Kemble attracts attention and that our cause is recognised.

Once I have gotten the hang of how editing and commenting works here (just signed up today after seeing your photo), may I fill in some details of the project?

Kind regards
Tim Radford, Canberra Projects Team

Thanks for your kind remarks. I hope you didn't mind me adding a link so that others can go straight to the article we are talking about. Yes, you can add material to Wikipedia but be aware that if an experienced editor thinks the material is too long, very badly written, written like an advert or is not relevant to the article's title then it may be removed very soon after you added it. I only say this because people sometimes add thousands of words to an article only to find it removed in minutes or hours! Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 19:38, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for writing. I can't help you at the moment because I have thousands of pictures on Wikipedia but I have no list of them. Tell me the article you looked at and then I can reply. Two points: you put your message in the middle of this Talk Page, I have moved it to the proper place which is the very bottom of this Talk Page. Secondly we don't reply by email because then others can't read replies. Vulcan ... to be 1, or to be 1A

edit

Hi Adrian, ref your nice picture of a Vulcan here at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vulcan.filton.arp.750pix.jpg However the captioning is out a little. Vulcan B1s had no fuselage tail extension for ECM kit, so this example is clearly a B1A. I hesitate to jump in with both feet and alter the caption meself when it would be better done by you. Would have also checked the serial # against Tim McLellan's book but see that the aircraft in your pic has neither a serial or roundels. 86.163.210.244 12:11, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dear Arpingstone, we'd love report on Westminster Cathedral on our (non-commercial) website http://www.kirchenbau-dokumentation.de/dokbuero/index.php. Would you allow us to use your picture of westminster cathedral's nave and do you also have a photograph of the building's exterior? Thank you very much C. Kopp

Sorry to be so long in replying. Sadly, I don't have any other pics of the cathedral except those you see on Wikipedia and I don't do text so can't write you a report. You are very welcome to use any of my pics on Wikipedia in any way you wish, I love to see them used. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 10:00, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I found this picture of yours, and would like to obtain a good copy to present to someone who has worked with the insurance market and in particular with Lloyd's underwriters most of his life. Would you be able to provide an original and what size would be the largest you could do.

await your advices Annabel

Thanks for your request but I'm afraid I keep on my computer the exact same image in size and quality as I upload to Wikipedia. So all you can do is to collect the pic off Wikipedia by left clicking the thumbnail in the article, then left click the pic that results until it won't get any bigger, then right click and choose Save As. Hi There Arpingstone,
I was admiring you R/C Coast Guard C130J photo and I must say, Well Done. That plane looks fantastic. I to would love to build an R/C C130. May I ask where you got the cowling and the nacelles?

Sorry but I came across that magnificent model at the show and photographed it. I have no information on the builders of it. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 20:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

RAF Bentley Priory

edit

Hi, I dont know if you are the right person to ask, but I am currently translating the article about the Battle of Britain into Norwegian Bokmål/Riksmål with an eye that it is 70 years since. I have also used one of your pictures in the article to show a Hawker Hurricane and given you credit for it. However when I started to translate the article about RAF Bentley Priory I found that we do not have any free picture. It would be very nice to have at least one, if you know anyone that is in a position to shoot one and upload it I would be more than happy about it. Question about " Oxford Street in London"

edit

Click here to see the picture Hello. I am French, and for a presentation I decided to describe your picture: Oxford Street in London. I described it but I asked myself a question: what is the man who is standing in the middle of the street (and in the center of the image) represents something? Is he a symbol? Do you know why it is in the middle of the road? I do not know if you understand me, anyway, your photos are all very pretty. Here is my e-mail: [email protected] Thank you very much. --82.237.250.11 20:33, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Jennifer.Reply

Hi Jennifer, thank you for writing. Yes, I understand you, your English is very good! Questions are replied to here, not by email. This is because other people want to read the answers and if I used email they would never know my reply to you (which would very annoying for them). The man in the blue pullover had decided to cross the road. He realised it was dangerous and stopped for a moment to decide whether to go on or come back to the pavement. So my picture is a moment in time for him and he might have gone either way (I didn't notice what he finally did). That was a good question, Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 22:29, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

RE; Using your pix on CNN Networks

edit

Hi there, am contacting you from CNN broadcasting Network. We have a producer who would like to use some of your photos posted on Wikimedia for a piece she is doing today. I believe the shots she wishes to use are mainly of concorde. I appreciate you have stated these pictures have been posted for Public Domain and therefore am presuming you would have no objection should we wish to use them.
However for legality reasons I would require a quick e-mail response from you stating that and confirming any fonting credit you would require for your photos.
If you could kindly advise asap as the deadlines are very tight.
Many thanks, Margaret O'Sullivan, Margaret.O'[email protected] or [email protected]

Gem Animals

edit

I was looking at your gem animals photo - excellent shot, BTW - and you identified the minerals they were carved of save one: the relatively clear 'dog' surrounded by the malachite elephant and rhino, sodalite hippo and tiger eye pig.

Thanks for writing concerning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gem.animals.arp.750pix.jpg
Well done, you are the first person to notice that the green and purple pig at the front is not identified in the key! It's a fluorite pig, the same rock as the all-green frog. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 19:40, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tree Ring Photo

edit

Dear Adrian,

I would like to use the photo of tree rings at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tree.ring.arp.jpg as an illustration for an article (about age-dating corals by analyzing 14C and counting growth bands)in a newsletter I edit (http://soundwaves.usgs.gov/). I have a question: Is the trunk's diameter = 3 ft, or is 3 ft the width of just the part of the trunk visible in the photo? Thanks! Helen Gibbons

The three feet I refer to is the diameter of the whole trunk, not the size of the bit in the photo. You are, of course, very welcome to use the photo in any publication or website. Thanks for writing. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 22:09, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Arpingstone!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Brixham raft image

Dear Adrian,

I edit a blog, Popular Logistics, about disaster preparedness and related issues. We're looking at improvised means of responding to floods and found your blue raft image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Raft-brixham-750pix.jpg

We believe the barrels are a commonly available United Nations/U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved 50-gallon water barrels. Do you know anything about this raft - or what formulae are used to sort out how many barrels displace how much weight?

Sorry but I have no information whatever on that raft. I was walking aling the quayside at Brixham in Devon, England, and saw the raft. Black Arrows photo

edit

Hi Adrian,

Just a note to say I believe your photo on the Black Arrows page showing the 16 aircraft is actually a photo of the Blue Diamonds of 92 Squadron, when they displayed at Farnborough in 1961 or 1962.

If you look closely at the wing tips of the aircraft, they have a white tip, which the Black Arrows didn't have but the Blue Diamonds did. Also, the only formation ever flown as a 16 aircraft formation by the Black Arrows was the 16 aircraft roll flown after the 22 aircraft loop in 1958, they never flew such a large formation again. I am in contact with SqnLdr Brian Mercer who lead the Blue Diamonds and he would like the credit for this formation.

BTW I am an A330 captain, for Qantas... Thanks for your work on the wing... It is a beauty.

Regards Mike Glynn
Here is a film of the 62 show, which has 92 sqn at the end - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ywHHR0EJHU&sns=em

Thanks for the information. I accept that I made a labelling mistake on that photo and will correct the error in a day or two. Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 16:26, 7 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Strange things happen …

Hi Arpingstone,

just FYI: Your File:Grob g109b vigilant t1 of raf at riat 2010 arp.jpg went on a journey to defenceimagery.mod.uk and from there (through a mass upload) back to Commons. I already noticed User:Fæ about it, so the duplicate will probably be deleted soon, but I couldn't resist dropping you a line … --El Grafo (talk) 17:09, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I added image on my website http://privatejetcharter.hostigon.com . I hope that this is OK.

No problem, that's fine, though it would have been nice if you had acknowledged me by adding something like "Picture by Adrian Pingstone" (but not legally required because the picture is Public Domain). Nevertheless, that's not a problem for me. Thanks for writing - Arpingstone (talk) 07:54, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

World's largest photography contest comes to the UK!

edit

Hi Adrian I am emailing in case you might be interested in contributing photographs of their local listed buildings to the international Wiki Loves Monuments competition, which runs throughout the month of September. I am a volunteer with Wikimedia UK. Entries can be images taken specially for the competition, or can be pre-existing images, and will be available for others to use on Wikipedia.

World's largest photography contest comes to the UK! September is the month when summer begins drawing to a close, the football season is in full swing and the leaves begin to change colour. You may not be aware that it's also the month of the world's largest photography competition. Wiki Loves Monuments is a global competition, open to everyone. In the UK the aim is to gather together freely-licensed high quality photographs of the UK's listed buildings for use on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. And it's open to everybody. Wikipedia has a global audience of over 500 million people every month, making Wiki Loves Monuments a chance for entrants to have their photography potentially reach a very large audience. For example, the article about Hadrian's Wall receives around 700,000 visitors a year while the article about London is viewed around 4.5 million times a year. Aside from being great fun, Wiki Loves Monuments is a way of capturing a snapshot of our nation’s cultural heritage for future generations, documenting our country’s most important historic buildings. Over time, the collections gathered throughout the competition will become an incredibly useful historical resource. Entries can be images taken specially for the competition, or can be pre-existing images. Michael Maggs, volunteer member of the Wiki Loves Monuments UK steering committee and a Wikimedia UK Trustee, said: “The contest is a great way not only to contribute to Wikipedia but also to record and share with the world images of your local historic environment. You don't need to be a professional-quality photographer to upload photos and help make a difference.” Jon Davies, Chief Executive of Wikimedia UK, the charity that is helping to support the initiative, said: "Taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments for the first time is very exciting. We’re hoping that the UK will provide a leading contribution to the contest and are calling on photographers, amateur and professional alike, to help to make this happen. We'd love for the global winner to come from the UK." To learn more about the competition and to get involved, visit www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk. Rodw (talk) 18:01, 30 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

DISREGARD THIS MESSAGE Would like to discuss using your Septuagint image in our program ==

Hello,

I am hoping to discuss with you the possibility of using your image of the Septuagint in our program we are producing for Smithsonian Channel.

Unfortunately, our lawyers don't accept the release page from Wikimedia Commons as a release because they feel it is not monitored by the company well enough and would be too easy to fake a release for someone else's work.

Please contact me at [email protected] and we can discuss having you sign a release for us.

Dear Adrian, I hope this email finds you well. I’m executive editor in the German publishing house Carl Hanser Verlag Munich. I was responsible for a comprehensive handbook about the technology of aircrafts and helicopters (in German "Handbuch der Luftfahrzeugtechnik"). After a long time of preparing the manuscript now the book is available. In Wikipedia we have found some of your excellent photographs for illustrating the text of this new handbook. We were glad to use these pictures without any restrictions. In January 2014 the Carl Hanser Verlag Munich had published the brandnew "Handbook of Aircraft Technology". You can find it at http://www.hanser-fachbuch.de/buch/Handbuch der Luftfahrzeugtechnik/9783446423411. Please contact me at "[email protected]" and give me your address. Hi Adrian -

I have a question about the 1894 letter that you scanned and uploaded for the article Cursive. [5]

Do you happen to know the year of the death of the author of that letter? Technically, the author holds the copyright. (I'm guessing that that the author may be your grandfather or another relative, so you may know of his passing.) The year he passed helps determine the appropriate copyright tag for Wikimedia.

Thanks. Infoman99 (talk) 02:06, 6 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Photo usage 2

edit

Hi, I'm working on an educational videogame with which I'm trying to build a bridge between animal awareness and Pokemon fans among others. It started out as something small and I talked to you before about it, but it's getting bigger and more professional and I'd like to know if you're still ok with me using your pictures. It's regarding these images: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Common.squirrel.monkey.arp.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Donkey_1_arp_750px.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inca_tern_arp.jpg

And I would like your permission to use it under those licenses with the following attribution: Adrian Pingstone, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Arpingstone

Also, because I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding, you are the original photographer correct? It sometimes happens that another person simply takes a picture from somebody else and uploads it to wikipedia with a license to distribute. That is why I'm asking.

There is more information on the game here, including a short video that tells a little bit about the background: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/238178285/animalalbum

I also have a demo version of the game available so you can see for yourself in what way the pictures are presented: http://dromedarydreams.com/index/demo/0-8. Please let me know if I have your permission, if the pictures are yours and if you want a different attribution. With kind regards, Sjors Jansen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Garfunkel_Jansen

Thanks for writing to me. All my pics on Wikipedia are Public Domain (with no exceptions) and all are taken by myself (with no exceptions), so you are free to use any of my Wikipedia pics wherever you wish and to modify the pics as you wish. There is no licence for a PD pic but your suggested acknowledgement is fine with me. Please don't hesitate to ask any further questions, Best Wishes - Arpingstone (talk) 20:13, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! I'll do my best to turn it into a great game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Garfunkel_Jansen

Quiz

edit

Hey there, I've known your photos from some time and I really enjoy your work. I also like to photograph aircraft but where I live there isn't much traffic and it's always the same aircraft. I also like web developing so I decided to build a nice and simple aircraft quiz with photos for fun and share it with friends, maybe more, and I wonder if it's ok to use some of your photos, with credit of course... Regards! Miguel

Dear Miguel, Thanks for your kind comments. I would be delighted if you used my pictures in any way you wish, just credit them to "Adrian Pingstone, Wikipedia" or something like that. I am lucky to live only 160 km from Heathrow Airport and 60 km from Fairford. To see all my 2000 pictures on Wikipedia the following should work (it works for me) -

Thanks, that helps! There isn't any aircraft yet but here's the link to the quiz I mentioned, hope it's ok to post here: http://skyquiz.mnunes.com/ A few more days and it'll be full of boeings and airbuses for a start...

This is a gorgeous photograph. It's crisp, clear, and well composed. You should nominate it at the English Wikipedia featuted picture candidates - I think it would pass. The only issue that I could possibly see is people asking you if you have a higher-resolution copy, but it is over the minimum resolution for English Featured Pictures (1500 px a side), and I presume it's just the necessary crop, so... Correction

edit

Hello, I have taken the time to extensively look over your work on wiki and it is incredibly vast. I have just created my own user name to edit pages and add pictures. I did notice one flaw in something that you have written though. I'm not sure how I would correct it, so I am writing to ask you to explain it to me. On this page you wrote that Emirates is the largest operator of the A380 when in fact Singapore Airlines has the most in operation.

EDIT: I realize now that i am very much incorrect. I am still posting this for practice though. Thank you!

Thanks for writing. I have looked at a picture I have of the four volumes of the 1407 bible in its showcase at Malmesbury Abbey (which is about 30 miles from where I live). I estimate a single page (not the double spread) is 15 inches (380 mm) high and 10 inches (254 mm) across. That makes the height of each letter 0.17 inch (4.5 mm). Concorde noise measurements

edit

Hi Arpingstone

I just coincidentally dropped on your user page reading that you did Concorde noise measurements! I led a project called Infrasound noise detection during the time of Concorde. At that time (1992 and later) we developed an infrasound direction finder. At the very first day after having fielded the detector, the Infrasound-Micophones and its attached high speed computer we observed daily 3 or 4 ten minutes long peaks of infrasound noise (1 to 5 Hz) coming in from NW. The peaks got if I remember correct 30 dB above noise level. These three or four peaks of noise arrived daily precisely at the same point in time. After several weeks of research we proofed, that we did hear the supersonic bang of Concorde in Switzerland. I probably still do have the reports in my screed. ...

Adrian,

I’m so sorry, I have no idea where ‘Nick’ came from. The photograph that I was looking at has the following file name.

File:Police.gun.1.london.arp.jpg

My face is obscured and I was wondering if you still had an unaltered picture. You took it in 2005 so it is rather unlikely but thought I’d ask.

I wish I had your skill with a camera!

Using your image of aerial view of Paris in The Economist

Hi Adrian, I am writing from a The Economist, we're hoping to use one of your images as seen attached here in a story about the city, but I am wondering if you have it in a larger size? Sorry but all my pics on Wikipedia are the same size as the ones I have in store on my PC so I can't help, Best wishes, Adrian ~~

Your Bristol Cathedral gravestone image used in a database of gravestones (where else?)

edit

Hi Adrian, We're using your image of Mary Carpenter's gravestone in our database on virtues on English anglican graves: https://epigraphs.net/epitaph/carpenter-mary/ ... and any other gravestone images of yours we might come across (hint, hint...). All the best & thanks for all the images. 82.47.180.156 12:51, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reusing the image. I'm unlikely to put any more graves on because I don't contribute much to Wikipedia any more (other interests). Thanks for writing. Best wishes ~~

Dear Mr. Arpingstone, which lens do you use for your D5300 camera in order to get such delightful photographs! I appreciate your work very much! Greetings, Arnold Holdt — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 94.216.53.202 (talk) 06:55, 23 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi from Bristol, England, thanks for your question. For my aircraft pics on Wikipedia I use a Nikon lens that covers the huge range of 18 mm to 200 mm, so it's wide angle through to telephoto. The 200 mm end is not really long enough for military aircraft so I bought a Tamron 70 mm to 300 mm lens. The problem then was that for aircraft on the ground 70 mm was too long and I hate changing lenses at a show because that lets the dust in. So now I stick to the Nikon lens for everything, ground or air. The lens says "AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED" Other lettering on the lens is DX and VR. Best Wishes Arpingstone (talk)

Dear Mr. Pingstone, I too am retired (aero engineer and academic, about your age) and am writing a book on the mysteries of flight, primarily wing lift and jet engine functionality (Physics). In connection with this book I would like to use the picture cited (giving due credit, of course). I noticed that you were kind enough to grant use to another such request. You might want to check out another book I just published: "Powering the World's Airliner" (Pen & Sword, 2020). This has more history than technology. Sincere thanks, Reiner Decher. Hi from England (Bristol to be exact). You are very welcome to use the picture because I make all my images Public Domain, meaning you can do as you wish with any picture I have on Wikipedia or on Commons. A credit is nice but not compulsory. So if you want to use any of the several thousand images I have on Wikipedia or Commons there is no need to ask further, just use them. Thank you for writing, best wishes, Adrian Arpingstone (talk) 20:48, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bath University Climbing Wall

edit

hi Adrian, I saw one of your photos of the old university of bath climbing wall. Obviously it no longer exists but I'm wondering if you can provide more information such as its old location or the plaque on the bottom. Thanks! 85.255.236.222 20:17, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Adrian for getting back to me so soon. Do forgive me if I use this page incorrectly as I don't often use wiki sites. I only messaged as I wanted to find out more about it as your image is the only thing on the internet about the wall. From my understanding (which might be incorrect), one (or possibly two) ex-members of a mountaineering club sadly died and that the wall was built a long time ago as a tribute (hence the plaque). Obviously, the wall is no longer there, but being a student at the uni, I wanted to see if I could determine its old location. Thanks anyway. 86.8.100.166 20:43, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for writing to me but unfortunately I can't help you. My wife (being a keen swimmer) went there sometimes to watch the swimming in the 50 metre pool. While she was watching I would wander round the university and take pictures for Wikipedia. But that was a long time ago and I can't remenber where the wall was and I never noticed the plaque. Sorry!! ~~

Sugilite Owl and Mouse

edit

Hi Adrian. Your picture of the Sugilite Owl and Mouse caught my interest and I would like to know more about it. Do you know where it came from and where it is today? Any information you have on it would be greatly appreciated, thank you. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Owl_in_sugilite_9_cm_high_arp.jpg Scootna (talk) 15:39, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hullo from Bristol, England. I am Adrian Pingstone. Here's the info on the Sugilite photo.
I bought it in the year 2000 at the Cheltenham Gem Show (about 40 miles north of where I live) for £120 UK pounds.
Photographed with my mobile phone (Motorola E5) on 26th August 2021 and put on to the Wikipedia Sugilite article the same day.
I still have the owl, here in my house
Thanks for writing. Best Wishes Arpingstone (talk) 07:49, 9 October 2024 (UTC).Reply
I appreciate you taking the time to respond. It is a beautiful piece. An owl and mouse hold a special significance for me. Thank you for sharing, it is a beautiful carving. I'm going to a rock/gem show this weekend in Utah, USA. I'll keep an eye out for owls. Cheers. Scootna (talk) 20:23, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

St Aldhelm stained-glass window

edit

Hi @Arpingstone, just a quick one about a photo you uploaded at File:Aldhelm.malmesbury.arp.jpg. It's a beautiful photo but the description says it is taken of a window in Malmesbury Abbey; it is in fact from the nearby St Aldhelm's Catholic Church, also in Malmesbury. Just thought I'd run it by you before making any changes to the description in case there was anything I might be missing! All the best, Vesuvio14 (talk) 23:36, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for writing. You are right about the picture, I've no idea how I made the mistake! For your interest, I live in Yate, 17 miles from Malmesbury. Best Wishes ~~ Arpingstone (talk) 08:20, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, I'll update the description now! It's so lovely to see all your photos of the local area, they really help bring articles to life!! All the best! Vesuvio14 (talk) 10:58, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
