First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Will this work: File:Spherical Wedge.svg? Pbroks13 (talk) 23:03, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

That Latuff cartoon

edit

The discussion also mentioned changing the categories of this image should it be kept. Since you weren't part of the discussion and since you are the one who closed the discussion, it would be best if you remove irrelevant categories from this image as discussed. Drork (talk) 10:10, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for pointing this out. I've removed all but the Carlos Latuff category. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:14, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. Drork (talk) 10:19, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for being a nag, but please note that Pieter Kuiper try to revert your edit. I re-reverted him, but I wouldn't like to do it anymore, since I was part of that discussion. Drork (talk) 10:43, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've sent him a message about it. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:50, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Small deletion problem

edit

Thanks for deleting my redundant maps. A small problem though: CommonsDelinker seems to have edited File:Rondebosch OSM map 873px.png after the deletion, resurrecting the page (though not the actual image). Would you mind going back and deleting it again? Thanks, Htonl (talk) 18:24, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 14:12, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I believe the majority of these terrain maps with roads here

were taken from MICROSOFT ENCARTA VIRTUAL GLOBE 1998 Edition.

I suppose you meant to write "kept"?

In Commons:Deletion requests/File:ARA Belgrano sinking.jpg - because that is what you wrote on the file's talk page. Regards, /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 13:36, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, I meant for kept. Thanks for fixing that for me. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:39, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Anonymous Dissident, this request was incomplete, nobody notified the uploader Eleassar about it. I'd suggest you to reopen it and restore the image and notify the user or I can do it if you don't mind. Regards. Anna (Cookie) (talk) 21:41, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's up to you. I don't think it will materially affect the request, but I won't stop you if you feel compelled to re-open it. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 13:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Another one is File:Fourniéjulien6.jpg. Something odd must have happened there when you closed the mass DR: the file is gone, but its page still exists. CommonsDelinker did not remove this from the wikipedias where it is used. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 21:44, 8 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Anonymous Dissident!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

edit

Hello, On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. And they believe that commons policy is not so clear regarding the subject. So since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 13:46, 20 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Sysopdeleteform.png

edit

File:Sysopdeleteform.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
